I have a couple of ul502s - a head and a ul112 combo - and would suggest you could drop the Radial (unless there's something that you particularly like about what it can do for your sound). The 502s pre is very impressive indeed, in my opinion, and I tend to use the less tweakable channel most of the time. You should find that you have a great deal of control over your tone with either channel - the shaping is very powerful and sophisticated - the aim with the design was to provide something like a very high-end channel strip (and it worked). I'd just be a little careful - if you're looking for an ultra-clean, articulate, airy and hi-fi amp, then the 502 has no peer in my experience. The 502 can also do a very solid thump with plenty of power. If you're looking for a bit of grit and drive, then you might want to look at alternatives. On the question of two basses - the switching is super quiet - you'll just need to be a bit careful with gains if you're using two passive or two active basses. Oh, and there's a 502 for sale on BC at the moment - the seller is extremely trustworthy too!

I couldn't agree more with LukeFRC - I have a Warwick Streamer Stage II and the tone is immense. You should be able to pick one (or something similar) up on Basschat - or ebay, but beware! - and have enough left for a decent Fender Jazz (maybe a Geddy Lee or Marcus Miller) Good luck - you're clearly in good position!

It's just great to see a 'proper' collection - I don't have the discipline - well done, I'm seriously impressed

I wish this hadn't come back up on here...I'm all anxious again... How about, err...a Wechter 9400 ABG (original price £3900!) fretted by Martin Peterson, perfect condition and about 6lbs, a Sei Jazz 4 in Swamp Ash (no fancy top but a beautiful neck and abalone blocked, rosewood bound board) - excellent condition and around 8.5lbs...and £300 your way (£325 if you can deliver/collect)? It's the best I can do for lightweight 4s. Edited for minor change - offer for delivery etc. Oops, then edited again for miscalculation

Haha - 'still recovering from the cost of my first Alembic!

Whoaaa! That's done it...I was fine but I realise I want a Spyder now - just fabulous! I'm pretty sure the sound of this lives up to the looks

Sell your basses and buy my Fender Masterbuilt Fretless Jazz - it's bl**dy stunning but I'll never be able to play it as long as I've got etc...

I've found Antorias to be a bit variable over the lifetime of the brand, however, some of the earlier models are superb (I think you have one of these). I'm really rather envious. I used to see an Antoria Strat appear in A1 music in Manchester throughout the mid '70s (I think it came in and out a few times) - the finish was a fabulous, hypnotic salmon pink and the instrument looked cared for but vintage at the time. I'd love to know where that is now - I couldn't afford it as a kid and couldn't play it now, but it's one of those instruments that stands out.

The Spyder - oh yes! Absolutely bl**dy marvellous - not really a bass for the wallflower player. I just love Alembic's ability to make the outrageous look classy and cool. Any chance of some close-ups?

A real classic and classy simplicity about this - excellent choice

Interesting diversity of opinion and experience in the OP and follow-ups here. Personally, I gave up gigs and bands almost twenty years ago (after about 15 years of heavy gigging - some 'names', some nearly names and a truckload of wannabes) and have never looked back. I play only for my own pleasure and fulfilment now and enjoy it immensely.

I hope you're not a surgeon. Good luck - as others have said, be cool/stay cool, sit in the groove and look like you're enjoying it
MB1. ....So You havent seen the bass either Lawrence?....without pictures your pissing in the wind at that price! BUMP!
Haha - Nope - I haven't seen it but I'm pretty sure it exists ('don't want to get into discussions of the metaphysical here) I suspect Carlbass hasn't been too active on BC for a while (though there's an indication he was last seen on 9th June). When we last spoke, the seller was very interested in getting hold of a couple of Wals. If anybody is seriously interested in an Alembic, as Molan suggests the prices aren't as prohibitively high as often assumed. There are great deals at Basscentral on SCs - around £5-6k should get a very nicely specced SC into the UK for you. Alternatively, for something really special, there are a few custom specced Alembics (inlcuding Series basses) at Station Music for between £6K and £15k - see: http://www.station-music.de/bass/alembic.html Possibly the best way to get hold of an Alembic at a reasonable price is to keep a close watch on the Alembic Club site - as others have said on BC, the Alembic Club has some very knowledgeable and supportive members and there's a decent turnaround of all Alembic models. If Carlbass is around, it would still be great to have some pics.

Fender Precision Active Preamp Upgrade, Ideas?
lozbass replied to The GroovyPlucker's topic in Bass Guitars
It sounds like a two band pre with a stacked tone pot is probably the way to go (especially if the unit is small and you can avoid any routing. Have you thought about where the battery is going to sit - it may be that somebody produces a small pre with a battery holder (something like a J Retro but for a P - I think somebody suggested that John East produces a P pre but I haven't seen one personally). On the scratchplate, I think you're just going to have to carefully drill a hole. -
Absolutely lovely - I'm a big fan of old Rippers and Grabbers and yours looks like a fantastic example. My old Ripper is rodded and lost its original tone but it's still gorgeous
However, on a bass that I will post pics of soon (after I get it), the cost of the finish alone is more than the cost of a Sadowsky.
Hmm...apologies if this is a little off topic...are we about to see an addition to the Alembic thread...or a Ritter perhaps?
