I don't know what you think of Trace Elliot, but there's some nice Trace gear around on BC (in the for sale section) at the moment. The TE 4x10 combos were a bit heavy, but they're immensely solid, very loud and have a great tone (if you like the Trace tone) - I think there's one on here for around £250. I think I've also seen a Trace V type 15 combo at a good price.
Yup - I wasn't questioning his use of it... just pointing out if there are any billets anywhere, it's going to be nigh on impossible to get it imported!
Yeah, this is intriguing - I've not looked at the detail of the current US legislation - maybe it's legal to import old growth, old cut (just not new cut, new growth) Donning anorak...I believe that some companies are actually going back to the stumps of the DN trees that were cut down decades ago and trying to harvest further timber by cutting down into what remains of the trunk. Again, I'm not sure about the legality of importing timber so recovered, but I'm told that some guitar/bass builders are using the stuff and charging (serious) premium prices
That is stunning, utterly stunning. And I don't usually like Jazzes! How much? Where? (Not that I can afford it currently).
Hi, it's at Rumbleseat music in the US - I've come out in a kind of anxious sweat. (I'm off this week and will write properly later - my apologies for the long, long delay - crazy work situation!)
Interestingly enough, Brazillian Rosewood is now on the USA prohibited export list...
This is true, however, the Brazillian Rosewood that Jimmy Coppolo was using is 'old cut, old growth' - he indicates this on the neck with his signature. Essentially, Jimmy aims to use aged and very high quality timbers. His Brazillian Rosewood (Dalbergia Negra) was very old - around 30 years I think - and was cut prior to the current prohibition. I think the rarity and prohibitions add to the cost - I did a bit of research and Jimmy is not alone in charging around $1500 for a DN board: a few other high-end guitar builders - electric and acoustic - charge a similar amount (if they have DN in stock).

That is just lovely - I'm getting a bit obsessed with sonic blue jazzers and the MHS is the icing on the cake. Now if it was bound and dots... Edit: hang on...maybe it is dots and bound. Now if it had butterbean tuners...
Whoops, yes I mean't the lovely 6 string along with the equally lovely accoustic. I have to know, what is that acoustic, it's looks wonderful ?
Sorry if this is pulling off topic even further - the acoustic in 6stringbassists photograph (at least it's next to a lovely Sei) is a Wechter 9400. Oh, and it started life as a fretless but was fretted by Martin - one of the most stunning jobs I've seen - he retained the original rosewood binding and it's entirely unmarked. I don't want to turn this into my personal for sale thread, but the acoustic is for sale too (please drop me a PM if you're interested - it's cheap!)
Not sure I buy into the $1500 fingerboard hype, but I'd like to try an AC.
Hmmm...it looks lovely and smells nice but I'm not sure I'd pay the extra $1500 to buy one from new either (it's not an issue really as there's none left) Edit: should've said if you find yourself on the other side of the Pennines, you're welcome to try mine in Manchester
http://talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t...hlight=sadowsky Check out that beauty
Tommix has had some of the most desirable ACs (well, to be honest, they're all pretty desirable) - a very nice guy. My LG4 (photos on p5 above) was originally owned by him but he moved it on to get the LG5 - fortunately, the 4 isn't wearing some of the scrapes that the 5 appears to have (not that it's a big issue - this is sure to be an incredible bass) If you have a look around TB, there's a stunning AC LG4 in Sonic Blue for sale - I got into advanced negotiations on purchase but with tax and duty, the price was getting towards that of a new bass (I'd still love it though and the DN is now exhausted)

Come on, let's see some photographs...the suspense etc... I need another fix anyway - my efforts to source another very lovely AC have come to nought so far...
If it's the one on the web site - I did give it a play when I was at the gallery and was very tempted (beautiful instrument), but am somewhat hooked on something like http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?s=&sho...st&p=356567 and also would be interested in maybe getting it hooked up for MIDI as I have an Axon AX100 I use with one of my guitars. Be nice to trigger it from bass if this works well enough.
Hi and yes - mine is the one on the website - it's a lovely bass but the size of the board got the better of me. I think you're referring to 6stingbassists Sei 6 (every time I clicked the link I was taken to a different but gorgeous Sei) - that's a stunning bass! I've not tried midi with bass for many years (and back then, the triggering was poor) - I'm sure Martin could sort something out. Weirdly enough, the acoustic bass that appears in one of the photographs with 6stringbassists Sei is with me now - what an incestuous world Basschat is! And back to the OP and the enquiry in a post above, AC is Alleva Coppolo

Hmmm...some interesting new products (and a long overdue overhaul to the site)

Hi again, I'm almost certain that the rack kit is designed to fit your Series 6. I had the same amp as you (with the rack ears) and the ears that are available via British Audio Service look to be exactly the same. It may be worth emailing the guys at BAS to check - I'm told they're extremely knowledgeable. I'm about to receive an GP12 SMX - it's in a sleeve but if it's supplied with ears, you're welcome to them (it's very unlikely that I'll rack the amp).

Just jaw-dropping! Each a stunning example and they appear to be in perfect condition. The Alembic and Pangborn are particular favourites - fabulous in every way
Now I want to get a single cutaway 6 string built - I'm hooked
Oops, nearly missed this! I should have said 'buy mine' - it's up on for sale at the Gallery now (and I'm sure that Alex will do you a deal!) - it's a lovely bass but the board is a little too wide for me

I've spent more time lauding Martin's work on here and elsewhere than I really care to think about - it's good to have another chance to say it though - Martin is really up there with the very finest builders in the world. Bubinga, your J looks stunning and it's great to see some really good photographs. One of the most attractive features for me is the weight - all the Sei Jazzers I've owned and played have been incredibly light (but very resonant) instruments. Further lovely features are the sculpted heel and very slender neck (up to around 4-6th fret). I'm fortunate enough to have both a Sei and an AC Jazz (and a ludicrously heavy mid '70s Fender) and I'd say that each has its merits. IMO, Martin's take on the Jazz is much closer to that of Sadowsky than it is to Fender (lightweight, downsized body, generally a more 'modern' tone). The AC take is really quite different and the aim is to produce a more traditional instrument that retains many of the early Fender build features. I've heard some players suggest that an AC jazz feels like a superb example of a played-in vintage Fender. I haven't played tens of early to mid sixties Fenders personally, but from my limited experience, I'd say there's something in this. On pricing, I don't think there's much in it between Sei, Sadowsky and AC (though new ACs are relatively hard to get hold of in the UK and you'll pay a dealer premium). The difference is really in the detail - I enjoy both modern and more traditional features so currently have the three Jazzers to cover a broad spetrum (the AC is more like a '60s Jazz so the Fender covers the '70s styling, feel and tone). It's great to have a choice and all three basses get as much time as I can give them (not enough really!) - there's certainly no 'go to' bass and the Sei certainly holds its own with the AC and (I suppose it's a 'vintage' now) Fender.

Thanks for the very kind words and no problem at all - you can source the rack ears (with fixing screws) in the US at British Audio Service: http://www.britishaudioservice.com/shop_main_trace.shtml They're about $20 but I think there's a minimum charge of $40 for overseas orders. I'll see if I can find anything in the UK (it should be much cheaper)

This is a bit tricky as there are different types of nitro finish and some nitro finishes are a bit tougher than others. In general however, I find nitro to be very delicate in comparison with poly. It really is much softer and more prone to scrapes, marks, dulling, scratches and dings. The upside is, nitro looks lovely and is easier to repair - smaller marks will polish out easily with something like Auto Glym or T Cut (but a gentle approach is necessary). I've not had a reaction from stands but it's a good idea to source one that is nitro safe (as it's also a good idea to use cleaning products that are nitro safe - I think Meguiars products for Fender are promoted as such). On leads, it will be easy to damage/mark a thin nitro finish by putting the lead through the strap - you could use a lead with a 'traditional' woven fabric coating (there are a few around - I think Fender produce one?) but, depending on the vigour with which you move around, it's likely that you'll wear the finish eventually. It's probably best to just take reasonable care and get on with enjoying playing and using the bass - a pristine nitro finish really can be a thing of immense beauty but you'll stop worrying as soon as you get a few marks on it.
That's a legendary behemoth - can't imagine trying to move that singlehandedly! Here's one: http://www.bassemporium.com/item.php?sku=CERWINVEGAB36
Thanks Alex - lovely to see one of these again (if not carry one). I remember the B36 well and with great fondness. The beast I had was of very similar design but was not a Cerwin branded cab - it was a folded bin with double ports (I can't remember the technical description a W- folded horn?) The 12 was front firing and back to back with the 18. It was just immense. I take your point on the Xmax (and I'm actually a big fan of lightweight efficient designs these days) but there was something about the sheer imposing size of the cab that made it a bit special - the embodiment of rock'n'roll
-
Hi, it will fit with no problem - standard rack width is 19" and the rack ears for the TE are designed to give you a perfect fit. If I see any, I'll let you know.
-
No problem, and seriously, think long and hard before parting with the TE (especially a Series 6) - I know you can pick up TE amps/cabs at knock down prices but in my opinion it's classic gear. It might have a strong sonic signature but it does what it does better than anything else I've tried.
-
I had the same head and it is designed to fit into a rack. Mine was supplied with rack ears - I'm sure it wont' be too difficult to source a pair on here or on ebay. I very foolishly sold the head around a year ago and have just managed to find another TE (but not a Series 6 - for me, the Series 6 is when TE got it just right)
-
I'd take it over to the Church and explain the situation to whomever is in charge. If you want the bass, indicate that this is the case and offer to make a reasonable donation to Church funds.
-
Absolutely stunning sir! You are clearly a man of exquisite taste. I just sold a Fender Masterbuilt Jazz - only because it was fretless and I couldn't play it. From what I've seen, the CS is putting out basses that are as good as any hand-built, high-end instruments
