1979 Yamaha BB1200, rare and in excellent condition
So this is where people of a certain age go to ogle is it ??
Guilty... An absolutely gorgeous bass! I saw this and was seriously tempted. There's nothing quite like an Alembic (as I'm sure you're finding out)
-
Obvious, but take the bass to a good luthier - they'll know what to do - you'll have shiny frets and no damage (and it doesn't even cost much)

Recommend a strap for a killer weight bass.
lozbass replied to AttitudeCastle's topic in Accessories and Misc
You could try an Alembic strap (or Moody - they make them for Alembic) - an extremely wide, supple and strong laminated leather strap. Very expensive but a very high quality product. I don't use them because I don't use leather - I've seen them though and if you don't have the ethical problem, then they're about as good as it gets. Italia offer a similar product (the wife and husband team that was Moody split and the husband now trades as Italia). -
Low tension nickel roundwounds that don't buzz
lozbass replied to Clarky's topic in Accessories and Misc
D'addario XL nickel rounds are reasonably priced and have low to medium tension (lower with lighter gauge). Trust me, I really wouldn't use them if they were anything more than on the lower side of medium -
Just cleaned the strange, dull bloom off my re-finished Ripper with mild detergent (washing up liquid). Probably a stupid trick but it worked a treat where polish wouldn't. If you have minor surface scratching (nail or plec hits), then Autoglym is excellent

I've been looking at these recently - some gorgeous designs and the build looks to beautifully executed. I'm a bit of a fan of Alembics and there are some clear similarities. The clarity of tone that is a characteristic of the latter appears to be present with the Unicorns

Dunlop straplock circlips - big thanks to Dave_Bass5
lozbass replied to lozbass's topic in Repairs and Technical
You really did help - thanks a lot! -
I'd concur with the opinions above - £600 is a bit steep. If the gear is in good condition, around £500 sounds reasonable to me. Also, if it is in good condition, you're buying a high quality, pro rig - I'm sure you're aware that TE has a signature sound, and if you like this, then £500 would be a good deal

Big problem rack mounting a Trace Elliot Series 6 GP12
lozbass replied to StevieD_FenderP2009's topic in Amps and Cabs
Replies 2 and 3 just about cover it I think. I've not seen a Series 6 like yours and didn't know that TE had produced some units that were fitted into the head sleeve without an outer, steel case (I'm quite shocked by this to be honest). This may sound stupid, but you've not removed the unit and left it's steel top and sides inside the wooden sleeve by any chance? I think your only solution now - if you really must rack the unit - is to build your own sleeve. This won't be easy, but if you have the expertise, then you might as well go for it (and good luck). -
Alleva LGs are alder with a 21 fret rosewood board (access is pretty good too). Not really a cheap option, but the brand is getting some plaudits and there's less chance of disappointment than there might be with a custom build.
-
I missed the subtlety of the 'LG5 on its way to blighty' post (I put it down to being mesmerised by the images of another stunning Alleva). I'm sure you'll love it Molan - Tommix is a man of considerable taste! I gave very serious thought to going for this but as it's a five it would have been pointless (lovely to look at though).
-
Some very lovely and unusual basses - it's great to see something out of the ordinary, especially the Riverhead

Hi 4000 - you're clearly an aesthete of the highest order - I've seen the evidence (lots of it!) I'll write properly tomorrow (work still mad but calming a little after today)
-
Proper rig - 'takes me back. Is that the Academy (or one of them)?
-
-
Hi guys - thanks again to all. The bass is currently away being set-up but I'm waiting eagerly to get it back and have a proper play. Molan - thanks - I too saw that MK and nearly had a pop at it - the only thing that stopped me was the scale length (and it was a 5 if I remember correctly so no use to me). Gorgeous to look at though! Wombatboter - again thanks and I love the 'secret well' comment! I wish there was - it would be the only thing that would make Manchester worth living in (apart from the Asian restaurants). Thanks too for disseminating the pictures - you are very kind. I'm a bit of a fan of gorgeous facing woods (coffee tables to many) and I'm in my element when I'm able to conbine aesthetics with playability.
It has the original pickups and Nick should be able to fill you in on the electronics as i think he had them overhauled. We discussed the fingerboard and concluded it was Massacar Ebony and it really is quite nicely figured.
Thanks, I thought it was macassar - an absolutely gorgeous board. If you're reading Nick and can inform us on the electronics, I'd be grateful

The early '80s Walnut Precision was a 'Precision Special'. The specials were released in CAR and LPB and later in white (I think). Around '82 (again, if memory serves) there was a short run of Walnut specials - these had a Walnut body and neck and look really striking. There was one for sale in the US recently but it was extremely expensive - it was the bass used for the Fender catalogue photographs.

Dunlop straplock circlips - big thanks to Dave_Bass5
lozbass posted a topic in Repairs and Technical
Just a big thanks to Dave_Bass5 for the supply of the circlip - a true gentleman! BC at its best. Cheers! Hi, I'm missing a circlip for one of my Dunlop straplocks (this is the little semi-circular clip that holds the washer in place on the inside of the strap). Does anybody know whether these are available as a spare (and if so, where can I source one)? The washer is currently secured with thread but it's not a long term solution. Cheers, Lozbass -
Pretty ... but thats two different basses in the pics! One's a fiver and the other's a four
Well spotted - that's seriously weird. I think that four is my bass (but it's not my sofa)...yep, just checked. It is mine. Tommix may have confused his pics (or there could be a stranger explanation)
