PS, and I saw The Virginmarys back in 2010 when they were still a 3 piece with a bassist. They were superb. Their first album was produced by Toby Jepson (of Little Angels Fame) and it’s a great slab of bluesy alt rock.

Disappointing new bass day...I would appreciate some opinions.

Tbh the first time I saw Florence Black (Feb 2020) the volume was much much better and they blew me away. More recently they’ve just become that heavy overly loud mush. I saw them on the Tremonti tour and felt the sound for the whole night, both bands, was sh1t. Far too loud, way too much boom on the kick and a huge, undefined bass mess. Heavy music doesn’t have to be horribly loud and undefined to make it heavy!!

Had the pleasure of meeting @MarkBuffaloStokes, aka, Mark for the first time today, whilst buying a fab sounding Mesa Diesel 115 cab from him. In typical Basschat fashion, we had a great 10, 15 minute chat about vintage bass gear, playing in bands, and going for that old-school authentic tone in our playing.. It was good, life-affirming stuff! And to be honest, I'm pretty sure we could have kept chatting a whole lot more. As has been said above and suffice to say, Mark's a great guy to deal with, excellent comms and he makes everything straightforward and easy - which is a real bonus when you don't live anywhere near each other. So, highly, highly recommended to one and all here on the forum. Thanks Mark, really appreciate you making it so easy to get this deal done! 🙏 Cheers Nik

Suggestions for passive DI box
Chris Hales replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Accessories and Misc
Thanks so much for the useful and detailed feedback - plenty of food for thought there! One thing I hadn't considered is that people might be using the DI out and instrument level out at the same time. I think I'd have to add a transformer to the DI out for that to be guaranteed hum free. The shaping control currently affects all outputs, but i think you're suggesting it would be more useful affecting the DI output only. One of the challenges I had with this pedal was keeping the current consumption low enough that it could be phantom powered, but I think I could manage that without affecting anything. Good shout regarding the rotary controls. You used to be able to get pots with removable knobs, so I could probably used those to cover both bases (haha!). Would having the footswitch sticking out present a problem, though? I don't think I have the resource to engineer a slick Boss style footswitch to this thing! Going back to passive DIs, which seem to be everyone's preferred option, do you not find these affect the tone - if there are no preceeding effects pedals, anyway? One thing I feel is important is to present the instrument with a high impedance (my prototypes present about 660k, which is already lower than the 1M I'd usually aim for). A passive DI would present around a tenth of this, which I reckon is much too low for a passive instrument. Thanks again for your really constructive input Chis -
Thanks. I mainly play 6s these days, but if the 5 or an EHB had turned up at the right price I'd have jumped on that too. Especially the 1006MS - I have one other bass on order and that should be it for a long time, but the 1006 would be an exception that would get me to crack my wallet open again. I love tighter spacings and all my 5s and 6s bar one are 16.5mm or tighter (the one in my avatar is 10.8mm), and I have a few SRs already. I am. I hope I don't hate the MS, but I'm adaptable. And it's so pretty. I wonder if I'll get any comments at the local Christmas gig, it being a 6 and with them weird frets...

Thanks, I'll do that. After posting I was working on the house whilst listening to someone's XTC playlist on YouTube...first 7 or 8 tracks, not one from Skylarking 😄

I've done a few gigs using an in house Fender Rumble combo 500 and I've always had compliments the two times I used it including mid gig from the singer who turned to me and commented on how good it sounded. I'm super tempted to pick one up.

You might have got away with it if you hadn’t been flashing photos of that strat all over your socials 🤣

I was all set to come Nottingham when you were supposed to play with them with Choked on the bill , but a pandemic put the kibosh on that !

That was pretty much my experience of it, it keeps the lows and mids intact and rolls off the higher frequencies which is why some folks describe it as sounding dark. But the high end roll off stops it from sounding fizzy or brittle. It's been a while since I played through one but it worked great on bass for a thick sounding drive sound. It's more on the vintage side of things but in my opinion that works better in non-metal musical contexts than clanky scooped modern drive sounds.

Featuring our own @cheddatom on drums! They're always excellent value...

I couldn't resist making a track about air fryers either.

Headsticks, at a small dive in Northwich , great little place. they were most excellent, absolutely on it , played superbly and completely lived and owned every song they played. they deserved a bigger crowd , but then even my +1 couldn’t make it. recomended ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ spare ear defence on the bar , you might need them ed to add a couple of pics

What a great great thread. The sort of thing Basschat does so well. I loved the documentary.

I've been enlightened by how many musicians have a good basic knowledge of theory but don't read. Also they often don't talk in terms if theory as they assume no-one else knows any. Discovered one of my bands we all know about resolving roots, basic modes and more 'interesting' chords, for example.
