If in a three piece... the guitarist, anything more then whoever's standing closest to me. Still do as bass pitch is nowhere near as critical as treble pitch.....I can 'tune up' in a sec just listening the overal din onstage.

Hahaha, well I think the best description of myself Useless #### might have got me banned. Apparently, it was a Cartoon in the Daily Mirror. I’m not the best person to ask on Piezo, but from what I understand they are less microphonic than standard pickups, so ideal for live performances & have a bright tone that cuts through the mix. Thanks! -

I used a tuning fork which, if you put the 'sharp end' between your teeth (bite it lightly), it rings in your head so you can hear over noise! Always used/use harmonics, even with a tuner. As my TC electronics dooby is used for guitar too I leave it on that setting then harmonics seem to work better. Why do people always leave their clip on on the guitar for the whole gig? I think it makes me look like a complete noob so always take it off. Mostly I'll have something to step on on the floor anyway mind. Didn't John Entwistle famously have perfect pitch then had to submit to tuning to Pete's harmonica? Must have been hell....

Much as above; tuning to piano at home (I had to keep asking my piano-playing sister which was the right key), and lucky enough to have keys in my first band. I trained on violin, so well used to using pitch pipes. For many years I owned a mid-1960's Vox Special Mk.VI teardrop 6 string guitar which had wacky onboard active electronics, including a feature that if you pulled a switch on one of the tone controls you'd hear an audible top E tone to tune to. British engineering way ahead of its time.....

2009 SX 70’s Jazz Bass Fretless Project £100 Sale / Exchange
basslondon replied to basslondon's topic in Basses For Sale
I’ve just uploaded additional shots of the fret slots on the neck. As you can see the lower side binding has virtually no interference from the fret removal process. The top side wasn’t quite so lucky …..not totally dreadful by any means but the lower side of the neck is where you would feel any disruption to the surface more so that’s good. Hopefully these additional photos help. -
How was your open mic or jam night last night?
knirirr replied to tauzero's topic in General Discussion
A relatively low turnout for the most local jam last night. Unfortunately, I mistimed things and was on bass when some of the guitar or keyboard players who don't have charts or a clear explanation of the form were up. They usually like tunes which I haven't heard, or with which I am only vaguely familiar, and which may not even be "proper jazz" (whatever that is). I've heard it said that in the proper jazz tradition one should learn tunes on the bandstand without charts. But, I am not a top-notch New York player and my bum notes as I try to work out what's being played will not be enjoyable (even if the audience don't notice). At least I did get a chance to do Midnight Blue on guitar, which I have wanted to play for months, and wasn't too bad at it. -
Thank you, it's really helpful to get a fresh perspective on it! I should have said, I was using The Doors' When the Music's Over as a reference...though I think I've deviated from it a fair bit. I think you're right about the vocal - I was trying to give the track a bit of 'bite' but I probably went too hard on the compressor. (Perhaps this would work better on a parallel track?) Good shout on parallel processing the drums as well. The drummer did send me an extra track where he'd added some distortion to the whole kit: might try squashing that and bringing it up just under the main drum bus. Thanks again!

Price reduced Lovely Amp. Blackstars up to date take on the Roland Jazz Chorus Stereo amplifier with added Modelling and effects. its a 100 watt 2 x10 combo and certainly loud enough for gigs. Weighs about the same as my old 50 watt Boss Katana 1x12 It works from the front panel but deep dives magnificently when you add the Free Blackstar Architect ( previousy insider) Mac/PC library editor. Preset download from the Blackstar community gives you access to a gazillion different sounds too if you’re about that. Works totally fine. It’s had a baby-ed home studio existence since birth (2017) and certainly never gigged. My guitar playing at home in the studio has taken me on a different journey ( one that involves Open Source NAM Computer Modelling and headphones ) having a great stage amplifier like this simply makes no sense any more. If you want to part ex against something musically related we could certainly have a conversation about that though I’d certainly not ( initially ) be looking to spend any money from my side unless it’s something mind boggling-ly special. there’s no footsitch but tgeee. An be obtained if that is a requirement

When I was a kid we all tuned to the A on one guitar and then tuned our own instruments, in my case using the fifth fret method. We were no doubt well off concert but at least we were all in tune with one another. That all went sour when the soul band was joined by a couple of sax players. But I don’t think anyone noticed.
