The Fallout Tribute at the top of the page - that's mine Stock D'Addario ETB92, which they describe as Medium Gauge, 50,65,85,105 - nice tension I find, figures are on the website; they do do a s/s set, same thicknesses I have tried both Status and Rotosounds previously, didn't like them, the Status were lifeless and the Rotos ring sharp on the initial attack before settling back to tune, really messed my ear up as a learner, I later found out from Scott Whitley its a known issue with some s/s strings

Yes very wise words. However, knowing the gear I have out in my little studio means even on the days I have too much pain to get out of bed, I know for example I have the best strat style guitar I have ever played and a 0.5watt point to point hand wired amp and 8 inch hemp speaker in a cab I made myself, means I CAN get the best SRV guitar tone I have ever heard reproduced by anyone that isn’t SRV himself and it’s not gonna blow your eardrums inside out. I not boasting, I just saying that years of trawling through gear had led me to my holy grail of guitar tone and when I am ill, as I have been for the last week or so with a flare up of this stupid illness, I can think of my gear waiting for me and it makes me happy, so far from a fleeting impulse of happiness it is long lasting. I should have given a bass example but a lot of guitarists that are into SRV say it’s impossible to recreate his tone but it isn’t. Took me about 3 years of buying and selling stuff to find the right combination and also playing technique, and I always made a loss when selling cabs and amps but it has kept me happy, at least it stopped me topping myself, which has gotta be money well spent 😁

The Bart’s probably did actually as I didn’t cycle or train as much. Never thought of that lol. You are right the omns is only 9.2k (I’ll check what mine is when I get a chance) but how the pickup reacts with the basses wood combo is more important. With chromes it’s extremely dynamic in touch and also where I pluck the string. My original pickups read around 7k. I’m playing through a genzler Magellan 350 with 10” array cab. Style is funk, rnb, fusion jazz and melodic soloing stuff. This bass + Bart’s loves flats and tape wounds. Melodic chord phrasing is dream like. My goal was to get a paul Jackson tone so I feel the 8s will help. I also possibly should get a bass that suits chord melodic soloing playing, seems like that is the direction I’m going. It could also be that the nickel strings I use aren’t complimenting. What I do know is that I like the tone of Bart pickups. Tone all the way off on the p bass isn’t muddy at all. Articulate, creamy highs even when you Dig in. Smooth smooth tone. I do think Bart 8cbp suit rounds.

I Had LaBella 'Stang nylons on my JMJ for about 6 months. They were brighter than I was expecting (only did a handful of gigs with them in fairness). I changed them back to LaBella flats mainly because the bass is more sensitive to hum and it doesn't ground through the strings.

That was done to save amps from being cooked by impedance loads that players employed because they didn't know better. I will confess to having done that, running 2 ohm loads with Fender amps that wanted no less than 4 ohms. But that was the '60s, we did all sorts of weird things then and managed to survive, and those Fenders were built like a Centurion tank.

Not really. The only time it might is if your amp is so underpowered that it can't drive the 8 ohm speaker to it's full displacement, which would be rare, like with a 25 watt amp and a 200 watt speaker. A 4 ohm 15 makes some sense if it's paired with a 410, or even a 210, to get the sensitivity of the 15 high enough to match well with the 210/410. But then you'd need a 2 ohm capable amp, not to mention the inherent flaws of mixing speakers. Oops! I did mention it. 😲

Maybe something historical to do with valve heads/amps going to 2 ohms so you could use 2 4ohm cabs?

Same here - had a 4ohm 4x10 for years which could never be paired with anything else - managed to find a buyer eventually and now stick to 8ohm cabs only (or at least I did until IEMs killed the joy of playing through a stack).

One Man Band - Leo Sayer

Just ordered a Tech 21 Oxford preamp/drive pedal from Reverb, to a price I couldn't resist. I already own 2 Joyo Oxford Sound, bought the latest one recently, as a backup, cause it is a pretty essential part of my basic setup. Got the Oxford used for what basically was little more than 2 Joyo clones from new. I hope it doesn't sound too different from the Joyo though, one can hope even greater, and this one got a cab sim on/off switch, and I know it will be quiter and much more sturdily build. It is this little fella' : So looks rather used, but I don't really mind, and says it works perfectly. Let's face it though, the Tech 21 Oxford is not a pretty pedal, no matter wear, and the Joyo clone looks much cooler.

I've never really understood why 4ohm 115/410/112 cabs are made, as I've always felt that they are designed to be in pairs or mixed with one another, and so should be 8ohm to come down to 4ohm total, unless you're running a 2ohm amp. More speakers = more air moved = louder. I suppose maybe if you're always running your amp at 11, maybe then it makes a bit more of a difference if you're running just one cab, provided the speak cone(s) have enough left to give?

I suppose you could use it for a double bass bow...
