If it's as easy to convert those pups to neodymium as to convert jazz pups...

That looks great, it's a very elegant design to my eye. One of the nicer headstocks in the boutique space imho

A little game - Can you tell which Jazz bass is which?
Silky999 replied to HeadlessBassist's topic in Bass Guitars
I think my build is JB1 only because it is more “zingy” and I seem to remember headless wanted to change some stuff to make mine more. towards the higher frequencies but then I am absolutely clutching at straws between the two. I hope so because I prefer the sound of the first one as I prefer the less muddy sound. Either way for a change of capacitor and some different pickups on the price of the original bass it is a fraction of the cost of the Fender -
Yessss that looks sick, I love it, even if it is wildly impractical

A very good point there, in pubs & smaller venues with no FOH it’s only band members (and more often than not the lead gtr) to blame.

Really interesting - thanks @Dan Dare!

Fixed it for you. 😄

I loved Hessey's - bought my one and only brand new bass there in 1979: an Ibanez Musician MC900 (because Sting had one.....) I still have loads of LP's that I bought at Probe records too, it was a great place to hang out. Only a vague memory of Curley's though. Growing up in Cambridge; the only shop for secondhand band gear was Cambridge Rock, on Newnham Rd; (Millers in the city centre did a very limited range of new gear). Run by a Jeff Lynne lookalike with a very dry sense of humour. I remember drooling over the stock of mainly 1960's Fenders, Gibsons and Rics - nothing costing more than a couple of hundred, but still way outside my pocket money budget. When I first saw an Ovation Magnum I vowed I'd have one one day, and 25 years later on I did.... All that vintage exotica, and all I actually managed to buy there was my first "proper" amp - a Carlsbro Stingray 100 head and a 4x12" cab DIY kit.

It's a tough one, isn't it? They really do sound very similar, even though one was built by FMIC and the other was constructed from imported bits in a bloke's living room & painted in his garden. -

The important word here is the service. We customers are buying a service which includes decent manners, and even a product. It's true like @SumOne said that it's legally a must, but not all companies are the same when buying, needing support, or returning items. @Phil Starr's experience is a great example how I would love to be treated.

How was Your rehearsal last morning or night ?
Stub Mandrel replied to nilorius's topic in General Discussion
Four hour(!) rehearsal for a dep today. Lots of songs in non-standard keys. Despite aircon, I drank three cans of 7up and fourth on the way home. Must have gone ok as the dep gig this weekend is now two gigs. Turns out that the singer is Dave Edmunds' cousin. -
Black Sabbath, Hammersmith Odeon around 1977 IIRC. Gut wrenchingly loud ( and also the worst rabble I’ve ever heard - sorry Ozzy ). We lasted about 3 ‘songs’ before leaving. My hearing was still affected for a couple of weeks afterwards. The Count Bishops at Dingwalls in London, late 70’s. Large banks of stacked Bose 802 cabinets for PA, and again my ears were assaulted by the harshness as well as volume. Moved to the back of the room, just as bad so had to leave.

Not exactly new, it's a 2014 bass and I've had it a month or so now, but with one thing or another I haven't got round to posting anything, so I'll explain. The current Mrs C and I retired together on 26th June, and during the countdown - whilst planning our new lease of life - had decided on a retirement present each. Hers would be another (third) dog......she's obsessed with Scottish Terriers 🙄......mine would be something I could pass on to our daughter at some point. I've had an itch for a semi hollow bass for some time and had been getting back into the Byrds and the Grateful Dead, then I saw this little beauty for sale, and it fitted the bill perfectly. The only problem was that we were about to go on holiday and I didn't want to miss out on it, so we went from Plymouth to Southampton, via Manchester (on the day Oasis were starting their home gigs🥴) and it came with us on a cruise round the Mediterranean, where it celebrated it's 14th birthday🍰. It's in mint condition, has all the case candy with it, stating it's number 25 of something like 75 I think, but I'm not sure that this makes it particularly collectable or valuable. If Ruby can prise it out of my hands when I'm a bit older and weaker, I think she'll like it, it feels quite compact and the string spacing is a bit narrow for my big hands, but it will suit her fine and she's working on a suitable looking customised painted suede strap for it already. I don't know how close it is to an original vintage one, I should think it's more of an homage to Chris Hillman's '67 single pickup Starfire bass, but it's a lovely thing and I can't put it down at the moment. Its got roundwounds on it presently and I should think some flatwounds would be better suited, it's a bit bright and I'm hankering for some more whump! I might even consider adding a neck pickup? it's alright this retirement malarkey!

Sweltering afternoon, SSG's! I've just got @Silky999's Nitro Jazz Bass back from my Tech, who's very kindly replaced the Wilkinson pickups with a set of Fender Pure Vintage 66s (from the current American Vintage II), as well as an upgrade to the tone capacitor from 0.022uF to a more standard genuine Fender 0.050uF. So here's the challenge - I've made two recordings on the same iPhone, playing the same piece with two Jazz basses (hopefully with some consistency!) Both into the same rig, with the same string set (Elixir 40-95). The contenders are; Fender Road Worn Flea '61 Jazz Bass (with standard OEM Fender Pure Vintage 64 pickups.) Our very own @Silky999's "Mr.Grey's" Daphne Blue Nitro Jazz Bass (with Fender Pure Vintage 66 pickups.) Can you tell which is which..? Jazz Bass 1 Jazz Bass 1 (copy).m4a Jazz Bass 2 Jazz Bass 2.m4a
