That's kind of my point. In 5ths tuning, everything fits the hand beautifully. In standard bass tuning, life gets complicated. In 5ths, it's like Bach wrote them for that tuning...oh, wait a minute, he did! 🙂 You can see and feel him sitting down with a cello banjo (☺️) and working it all out. If I could get some of that on a fretless short-scale bass guitar, I'd be happy.

I wasn't contemplating playing them on a DB, though I have to say they can sound great on that instrument. I'll leave that for my next life!

The Highlands are a big place indeed, @neepheid and the rest of the Aberdeen posse are about 2 and a half hours away from here. I have considered FRFR / active PA speakers, but the general consensus from the FRFR thread (from what I've read of it), is that unless you can go down the QSC route, it isn't worth it, which is why I ended up with the Ashdown in the first place. To add another googlie into the mix, we're going to be moving house in the not too distant future, so I think any plans for gear upgrades need to be put on hold. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions!

Welcome back Steve.

@Rob MacKillop: that looks so easy and sounds good. Well done. You just have to do the same with basses, too. Middle section with a fretless?

Feeling below par so somehow got distracted by Teen Town (again). I've learnt the first section but there are a few bars I can't get up to speed, but it gets a little better with each attempt. Edit: I managed an 'almost right' play though of the first section in 43 seconds. Jaco does it in 30!! Loads more work needed for both speed and accuracy (let alone feel)!

HeadlessBassist started following Bach in 5ths Tuning on bass?

I've taken several Double Bass pupils through the Bach Suites - the short answer is no. You won't be able to stretch your hand enough to be able to use one finger per semitone on a fretted bass, especially for the broken chords. Some of the Double Bass editions are published in different keys to the Cello version, but I've always found it best to use the original keys and bring the low C's and D's up the octave for the odd occasion you need them. They seem to fit better under the fingers in the original keys, particularly for Double Bass. That way, it's only me that has a brain issue, as the suites are programmed into my head in Cello fingering and now we're playing it on Double Bass/Electric Bass tuned in 4ths. Aaargghh!

I just got management advice from my 17yr old stepdaughter for showing my wife a picture of a bass and describing it as “sexy”! 😂🙈

Thanks, itu. Appreciated. I was contemplating the cheap Thomann fretless Beat Bass, £175, just for trying the project out, fingering-wise. I've already recorded first three suites on a tenor and cello-banjo, so have experience of CGDA. Cello-banjo:

The emoji at the end of my sentence is a clue? Anyway it's funk all to you but to some individuals it will matter.

I quit for 4yrs at the tender age of 27yrs old, because I felt that I was getting too old. I cringe thinking about it now but I needed to get my career and life in general kickstarted a lot more. I had always promoted my bands so had less time than band mates who were getting on with their lives away from music. I felt invigorated coming back. The pressure to “make it” was off and I have since worked in groups where someone else does the behind the scenes stuff. Ironically, I feel that I have had far more success in my later years. It is never wrong to stop or have a timeout when the mood suits. I have scaled back in the last year or so as the multiple band life was causing me a mild amount of stress. So, a soft reboot, of sorts.

Not hate but relentless disappointment. Up until I decided enough was enough, every single Jazz bass I ever bought or tried out, including a super light and resonant Mex RW which seemed very good but I just cannot get on with the shape and the constant knob twiddling looking for that P bass thump which for me just isnt there.
