July , Tis the time for another Composition Challenge
Baloney Balderdash replied to lurksalot's topic in Recording
This is an old composition of mine, so couldn't enter the competition, even if it fits very well into this month's "topic", but just recorded this take of it : A single track solo bass surf math rock (or progressive surf rock, if you will) piece, played on my just 28.6" scale length 5 string Ibanez GSRM25 Mikro Bass, "Mr. Growly - The Noodlemancer", tuned in G# standard tuning (that is as one half step bellow the upper 4 strings of a 6 string bass in regular B standard tuning, plus a high E). -

You May Be Right - Billy Joel

the cab is too heavy at 30kg I'll probably stick with my MB cabs
-
Two in one day! Funky Puppy from @Higgie. Basically an accurate clone of the Chunk Systems Brown Dog and Agent 00Funk in one box.

The reissue V4b and 212av cab is one of the best rigs you can get. Find one, buy it and don't look back.

Sledgehammer is about the only one I regularly play in my band that has a prominent fretless bass line. But it sounds fine on fretted - no complaints so far! PS, I used to love playing "Wherever I lay my hat..." and "Tears in Heaven" at home when the mood took me. Beautiful lines.

This thread is interesting to me. I think I'd like to try some coated strings on my Pingray. I usually have a problem with nickel skin reaction, but this would let me have more choice. I'm thinking about Elixir's but open to others. Is this a reaction to DR's coating material? I want something smooth feeling as well. I've got flats on other basses so I want rounds on this bass but I do like to minimise string noise. What coated strings have the lowest finger noise?

I bought a fretless Warwick Corvette around 20-something years ago from the old Bass Centre in Wapping (I miss that place!). Proper German-made bass, with bubinga body and ovankol/wenge neck. Lovely instrument, but I just didn't play it as much as I wanted to (if that makes sense) - a fretted bass just works better for what I play. Not to mention it was damn heavy (about 14lb on the bathroom scales) I sold it a couple of years ago when money was getting a little tight with the wife on post-covid-complication-related-long-term sick. Every now and then I get the urge to get another fretless, but I don't need one - I'm trying to keep GAS at bay by only owning and buying gear I actually have a genuine use for (I know - crazy talk!). But if I ever do get another one, I'll save some money and get a Harley Benton or similar. I mean, it's not as if I'd have to worry about dodgy fretwork!

A few pedals for your viewing - Aguilar AGRO - from nice to nasty, vintage warmth to modern clank. £90 posted. Carl Martin Opto-Compressor - awesomely awesome compressor. There's a fullness to the sound with these that is addictive, and no loss of high end. Here's the Ovnilabs review: https://www.ovnilab.com/reviews/reviews/cmclassic.shtml I have two of these for sale: #1 - nearly new, one paint scratch, never gigged, no velcro. £85 posted #2 - not new at all, gigged and velcro'd. £60 posted.

I stopped gigging a couple of years ago and have been slowly clearing out all my stuff ever since. I’m now down to my last bass (a Ric 4003 that will never be going) which I use for noodling and a bit of home recording. Logic plug-ins are okay but I do like recording audio direct and doing minimal work on it in the DAW so, after much research I’ve just got an MXR M80 DI+. It was a toss up between that and the Sansamp and in the end I was swayed by an Amazon price of just £150 on the M80. I’m very, very impressed. Deep and rich and sonorous - and then i hit the “colour” button and it’s even more so. The distortion is okay - not really my sort of thing anyway, plus i have a new-to-me Ampeg Scrambler on the way to do mild overdrive duties - but the core sounds I can get from the EQ are excellent. Of course, i’ve now started to wonder whether i shouldn’t get a cheap, second-hand P bass to complement the Ric….. and so the GAS starts again!

I swear by these straps, been using these for years and never had one fail me, keeps my bass locked in place https://www.daddario.com/products/accessories/straps/guitar-and-bass-straps/auto-lock/auto-lock-guitar-strap-black-padded-diamonds/

V1.2.2 Firmware is now available. It is a maintenance release so no new features.

I wonder if the channel is any different on this then, or whether it’s just a name change.

https://www.bassgearmag.com/v-4b-old-vs-new-head-to-head/ read all about it !!

That's why you need to stack it on an 810. Makes the front controls much easier to see 😁

yes it's weird isn't it. It's happened more than once to me but I've always caught it in time, except the one time I didn't (luckily it didn't even go out of tune)
-
There’s never been an arpeggiator.
-
Amen ! Some like them better than we do ! If they like them, I should like them. Acoustically, they are weird but with amp, preamp, a bit of feedback when the strings are not touched, I can love them.
