Temporary bodges that just last the course

Years ago I got a new Fender. It was lovely but I had some Fralins in another bass that I wanted to use in the new one. I took the Fralins out and installed them, and put the Fender's in to the Squire. Just put them in the bass, didnt wire them, didnt screw them in etc. Just storing them. Told the band I had this new bass and all were expecting to hear it at the gig. Opened the gig bag and there was the Squier, all in bits lol. I had taken the wrong gig bag. I had to secure and wire in the pups using gaffa tape back stage, even the wiring got the output jack. . I was panicking all night that ti would cut out. It didnt. Other than replacing the tape over the ends of the pup's with actual screws, the bass is still wired with tape holding the wires in place. At least 20 years alter. -
Absolutely, Terry. Yes, a certain Squier may have the right sound for you and may outplay all the Custom Shop Fenders you might try. But I still maintain that even though some of the prices are ridiculous, you are getting (given you pick the right one for you) a better bass by buying from the American ranges.

Relisted with pricedrop!! For sale is this ’89 Music Man Stingray. It’s a rare light one, weighing in at a bit less than 3,9kg. The body is finished in the classic honeyburst, and the lacquered neck has some nice birdseye figuring. As you can see, the bass has a lot of usermarks/damages (especially on the back), but technically all is good. The neck is straight and the truss rod works well. The frets show some wear, but it doesn’t affect playability. All hardware and electronics function like they should, the pots could be a bit scratchy though. Fixed price: €1975 I am based in the Netherlands, but happy to ship. I don’t have a case, but will use a gigbag for shipping. I can also take the neck of to reduce costs if wished so. No trades.

But someone with double the hearing acuteness you have can still prefer the sound of a Squier over your American Fenders. Aren't we talking about personal taste here? "Good" sound is subjective. How many of us has spent quite a bit on "upgrading" pickups only to either not hear the difference or prefer the originals?

That soldering does not look great! But love how the pup covers above ground have yellowed...

Not me. I have sold a comic collection, and other instruments. I also put aside a piffling £12.50 per month to save regularly for instruments. Christmas and birthday presents, even money found when clearing out my parent's house. It doesn't always work out - right now, I owe the joint bank account £550 for a spray job and body rebuild. However, last week, I found £500 worth of shares which I can now sell. The above process has funded three Hiscox cases (1 mandolin, two bass), electric piano, two Washburn XB925s, an EMU synth module, a strap. So, no, I do not have that problem. -

If you have access to a multimeter you could check the pot in question. One with continuity testing would be even better to check the wiring. Get a schematic for your bass off the tinterweb to check how it should be wired. The soldering looks like it could be iffy

I've just today paid for my custom German Sadowsky which has finally arrived after 3 years wait otherwise I'd be all over a few of these.

Selling this bass as I originally picked it up as a backup to my main touring 4 string, a white MM with all the same mods. They’re both great basses but I don’t have as much need for a direct duplicate as I used to and it’s too good to be sat around not being played. I had it re sprayed with this smokey black burst which maintains the look of the natural grain. It’s picked up some nicks and scuffs which I’ve pictured. I love the way it looks and sad to let it go. The neck has a beautiful flame to it and it and the fretboard are unblemished. Fitted with a John East MM preamp, hipshot drop tuner and schaller style strap locks, otherwise all original and in great condition. Will ship in UK for £30 or meet in London area. Open to offers and happy to answer any questions. Thanks! James

Nothing intrinsically wrong with Fender basses, but I have to imagine that even today, some people still aren't aware there are better options out there. Other than that.. (FWIW - I'm afraid if its not a Fender I'm not interested, yes there are lots of awesome basses out there that aren't Fender but that's a different thread for a different day). Seriously? Because of the name on the headstock? (Always curious to know why some go for only one particular company, whether it's Fender, MusicMan, Gibson, Rickenbacker, etc.)

I really like his playing on this cover of Running up that hill by Kate Bush - loads better than plodding along on C for 4 mins! There's also a vid of him and Ian from SBL talking through it that is worth a watch.

I got one from the local tip shop. It needed cleaning, and a replacement handle. It’s the older version, and I can’t connect my laptop to the TonePrint downloads. So it’s just got a chorus on the TP control. It has a separate drive control, and sounds quite good. (I don’t really need it - I’ve offered it to my son’s school as a free loan because they don’t have a bass amp, but they’ve taken over 6 months to think about whether they want it or not)

The QC is spot in on, no rough edges or anything! It's a genuine bona fide bargain. -
The irony that they are inspiring youngsters to pick up guitars, basses and drums and play live...... Just as most of the physical shops selling them have shut down.
-
Depends on how acutely you listen, I suppose. (Unless you have those ears that say 'a bass is a bass'.) I could even tell you which of my three Americans is which while blindfolded - they all have unique voicings. The nitro finished American Original has it's own free-sounding singing tone from the finish and the Pure Voiced 64 pickups. The open pore Ash FSR has a very different punchier bottom end from the 2008 Am.Std pickups. The American Elite has more sparkle at the top end and a distinct active shove to the bass frequencies.

Successful bands are popular because many people think they are good at what they do. If enough people think you are good then you are. QED As for Oasis, their songs are very popular with audiences and are easy to learn, so I love them.
-
What is objectively superior when talking about feel or sound? I can see being objective for something like build quality, paint finish, tuner reliability, bridge adjustability, etc etc. But "better sound"? I dunno.
-
Definitely, no maybes about it (see what I did there?) Whilst they may not be the most accomplished musicians they have a cool factor, if that inspires kids to start picking up guitars etc only a good thing imo.
-
Honestly, I don't think it really matters how 'good' they are, they were playing guitars on huge stages, TV shows etc... Something for people to aspire to, it really does help sell gear. Can you imagine how many Epiphones, Gibsons and various amp brands Noel Gallagher has helped sell over the years.

Absolutely! All my mates who worked in music shops loved Oasis first time around. They said that suddenly a new generation of 13 year old kids started coming into the shop, wanting to buy a guitar and to learn to play Rock 'n' Roll Star and Cigarettes and Alcohol...
