To me, it's the loss of control that appears odd. Direct sales to customers is, as you say, smaller revenue stream than their customer dealers. Buying into the Shopify model means doing things the Shopify way, that's the Web framework you must use. Now if Shopify provides everything Gibson wants to do, that's fine, but if Gibson wants to do things that Shopify can't offer, then they have to either build something off the Shopify site and link back and make sure it all fits. I can't speak for USA accountancy rules, but in the UK you could get this as a managed service through a Web design and hosting company and get the people costs off your head count. You also get the VAT back and it goes against corporation tax as an expense and HMRC are happy. For smaller companies Shopify simplifies things but for larger ones, I still think it's unusual. Clearly Gibson will have worked it all out and made their call so what do I know 😊 Rob

It's a shame there's no automated method on the XR18. Many years ago I was rehearsing in a terrible sounding room. They sent along someone with a Peavey unit. It may have been called an autograph. It put out white noise and a mic took sound samples around the room. The unit analysed the samples and set the eq for the room. It rectified the sound immediately. This was more than 30 years ago so imagine it would be pretty straightforward to incorporate.

But their model is via their dealer network isn’t it? Direct to consumer must be a much smaller part of that annual revenue. also the shopify costs go on a bit of the ballance sheets that looks far better to investors than taking staff on to manage what could easily become a tech liability.

Is the 25mm batten a finished size. Usually planed timber is smaller than the stated size! The stated size is what the rough timber started as before planing.. I hope that makes sense. Of course the same would apply to the 20mm batten unless the specification uses actual finished sizes! I would also agree with glueing as well as screwing as you get solid contact along the whole length of the batten. most commercial speaker cabs have 2 connectors wired in parallel ( +/- 1s connected together) specifically for adding a second cab.

Fender Rumble Stage 800 Combo £650 £550 £500 In very good condition and in perfect working order. Comes with original MGT4 footswitch, GTX-7 footswitch (shipped with the Fender Mustang GTX100 guitar combo, and available separately, but works great with this Rumble and a significant upgrade to the MGT4), soft Fender cover (with a little wear round the bottom, but these covers are pretty cheap!), original box and packaging. Genuine reason for selling as I have been ampless and using digital modellers for over a year now and it’s time to declutter! Collection preferred but can deliver around the Crawley area (within reason) for £10 for petrol and time. Happy for buyer to arrange own courier. https://uk.fender.com/products/rumble-stage-800

Another lovely Trace head for sale. This one has the 7 band EQ with a 300W amp. I've gigged this extensively with Stray and it's never sold me short. Internally, this has the 'Bi Polar Bear' power section, which was known to self destruct. This has been checked over and modded by my tech who has ensured the earth connection is solid with a star washer, and he's also coated a component inside with heat resistant compound, which prevents false temperature readings screwing up the bias. This was an official Trace Mod which is known to make these amps reliable. It's got the Trace tone in spades and plenty of volume. Two pre shapes and the ability to 'tilt' the EQ to make it either treblier or bassier, along with the well spaced 7 band switchable EQ. This one has come out of a rack, so comes with rack ears but no rubber feet (stick on feet readily available at your local hardware store!) £225 for this one collected from Milton Keynes - willing to drive a little way for fuel.

Better qualified than me... There is approx 310cm of baton. Total volume of 2.0cm x 2.0cm x 310cm = 1,240cm^3 Total volume of 2.5cm x 2.5cm x 310cm = 1,937.5cm^3 Approx total interior volume of cab = 40x30x27.5 = 33,120cm^3. I know it's slightly less as I should take into account the overlap of pieces but I've only got an iPhone with me and it's hard to keep track from the PDF. So (1937-1240)/33120 = approx 2% change. No idea if a significant change. Doesn't sound like it but what do I know. Rob

The economic arguments for this stuff are quite persuasive, but they’ll never get a look in from a large proportion of the public.

I'm not sure that I'm qualified to give you full advice on this, but I'll go ahead anyway 😆 . 1) The difference in volume between a 300mm length of 25mm by 25mm baton and 20mm by 20mm is 0.0675 litres, so if you multiply this by the length of the baton you're using it'll tell you the difference in volume. Personally I can't see it making a massive difference, but I expect somebody will be along soon who has better knowledge. What's the total length of baton you'll be using? (I can't remember the size of the cab). 2) I'd glue and screw. 3) yes, that's easy and feasible. You just need to wire the plates so that plugging in the second speaker connects it in parallel to the first by shorting between the positive of the first post to the positive of the second and the same for the negatives. You'll need to make sure that you never try and connect two amps to the same cab, or to the two connected cabs. I've been thinking about doing the same if I ever get around to building this cab, but would also quite like it to be configurable to run in stereo for my keyboard. Hmmm, maybe I need a four box solution 😆, but then again I already have an Ashdown 4x8.

I work full time but I fully support the idea. We all consume art in some form, but in the current climate it is pretty much untenable unless you are backed by a corporation or come from wealth. I forgot who said it but the quote that always sticks with me is "isn't it funny how there's always money for war"
