Steinberger XL2 1987 A rare opportunity to buy a 80s iconic bass. I’ve have been asked to sell this on behalf of a friend. I was playing at my local pub just before Xmas and the landlord said to me that he had a Steinberger upstairs. I asked him how /why and he said that he bought back in 80s just to collect . I took it home and since had it all checked out by a local collector expert. So based on the serial number it was made end of April, beginning of May 1987. It’s not been played in years but I just put a new battery in it and it played (still in tune!) The only problem is it didn’t come with the backplate. But has got 2 metal aftermarket bars that I believe to be a replacement. I have since found a guy on BC from Finland that can make them from a mould he has but he said he needs the weather to warm up before he can make one. (120euros + shipping) So I’m putting the feelers out there. A chance to own a rear 80s iconic bass. He is looking for offers around the £3k price and includes hard case and gigbag. If you are interested I have the bass in Hove Sussex if you want to come and try it . -

For those not on IG, he said transformer is custom order. Pots used are rotary dials with good quality caps on each EQ points. Knobs are custom order. I bet they will not produce a lot of it so profit margin might not be as great as opposed to being mass produced. IMO it is a niche product anyway for people who likes a Neve/API hybrid but cannot afford the real thing. is $750 justifiable? maybe, maybe not. But some people are ok with spending a lot more for stuff that are just a tad better if not just the same. Otherwise, noone will buy vintage basses. or branded underpants.

Yes we all know I am an idiot, old news. But I am very skinny with boney thumbs, even more so since getting ill. I am having trouble with dampening the strings, I use floating thumb technique since getting my six string years ago, together with left hand dampening when I can, but due to being skinny I have a real arch in my thumb between the knuckles. i dont want to use a string wrap around the nut. I know Mark King tapes his slapping thumb up for protection. Anyone use similar for dampening or do I have an original idea for a change?

I don't know about metal but on jazz BG I end up using the G heavily and using E is relatively rare. This riff, for example, is on the top two strings. Some time ago someone posted a meme along the lines of "fretboard wear for different genres". I can't find it now but the jazz one was equal wear everywhere on the top two strings, nothing on the bottom two. I wonder how accurate the metal image was...

My experience is that it is really variable and depends upon who is in charge in individual yards. To be fair the main issues are now in how the wood is grown, slow grown softwood is becoming rare and the species planted have changed. I noticed a steady downhill slope in the 30+ years I was restoring houses and I've a barn full of reclaimed Victorian timber 'just in case'. When I was doing this more regularly I used to check out the timber whenever I was in a yard and bought up the good pieces when I saw them which saved a lot of time compared with having to drive round looking to see who had the best stocks half way through a job. I'm such an old curmudgeon

I don't want to sound like a sychophant, but here, Basschat, is 'the place to shop'. Sometimes you may have to be a bit patient. I've bought some cracking gear, and recently bought a cab I've always wanted on here. I don't think there's anywhere more trustworthy and fairly priced.

IMA posted an IG story about this in response to ‘lots of questions about the price’ He stated that it’s due to high quality components and sparing no expense on subtle features, as well as development times etc. Said that the profit margins aren’t massively high in the industry and that it was all justified. Personally think it looks cool and really rate Ian and his content/energy etc… I’m sure there’s A LOT of people that can justify spending this much money on a pedal, or will happily spend it because it has his name on it... Personally I’m not one of those people. Would be interesting to see how how it compares to some of the other previously ‘high end’ equivalents… although this now makes them look like budget options 😅

Another big thank you to Bass Direct from me too. Been going periodically since they opened, most recently to collect my Cort Space 5 which was set up absolutely perfectly. Haven't put it down since! Mark and his team have always been helpful and knowledgeable, makes it worth the 4 hour round trip!

Thanks @Mike Brooks, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to that. I think I saw Thunder in Brum when they were supporting Marillion the early 80's and they were absolutely not my thing at all back then. I shall have to have a listen and see what I think now I no longer wear a Script for a Jester's Tear t-shirt and cowboy boots 😊 -
