lowdown Posted 12 hours ago Posted 12 hours ago Chester Thompson - As well as his Tower of Power and Santana days, he has been on the road with his own bands and trios: And I was going to mention his solo @14:00 on this live TOP gig, when Rocco drops out, leaving Chester and the Pedals. But all the shenanigans are good!! 2 1 Quote

I play organ, very, very slowly and then bring the speed back up in Logic on my tracks, which the world is not ready for. I went to watch Delvon Lamarr in the interest of research (and grooviness) and was amazed at how "messy" (for the want of a better word, and looking at it through piano playing eyes) his technique was. Of course, it was superb and worked flawlessly for what he was doing. I stress again that I was looking through the eyes of a very poor pianist. So I adopted this into my Hammond playing and it worked. Barbara seems to be pumping the vol pedal rhythmically. This is a Hammond thing? 1 Quote

She uses the swell pedal, as all organists do, but not rhythmically, i.e. in a fixed time. She's using both feet on the bass pedals, which will obvs be rhythmic. I think that's what you're seeing. I have been the victim of this when the local Hammond bod was playing faster lines with his feet than I was with my hands. Not that that is a major achievement really. Anyway, at 1:15 she is working that swell (vol? what was I thinking?) pedal. Quote
Hellzero Posted 11 hours ago Posted 11 hours ago Nobody mentioned it, but the Leslie cabinet is mandatory for a true Hammond B3 sound. 😉 5 Quote

knirirr Posted 10 hours ago Posted 10 hours ago Here's another one, with Jimmy Smith playing one of my favourite basslines. It's a bit long ("if it's 3 minutes long, it ain't really jazz" etc.) but around 5 minutes in is particularly good. 3 1 Quote
nekomatic Posted 9 hours ago Posted 9 hours ago May not be what you had in mind by ‘funky’, but as a ’90s indie kid (and adoptive Manc) I couldn’t not post this. 1 1 Quote

I watched a video of her once, and got increasingly annoyed with the camera angles - not once did they show the brilliant and sensitive Double Bass player. About five minutes in, I realised that the bassist was her left foot... Truly awesome playing. 4 hours ago, miles'tone said: Jimmy Smith. 🎤drop. The Cat.
