Hi folks! šŸ‘‹šŸ˜Š

Ā

My 16 y/o son has asked for a wireless system for Christmas. He only plays with his pals at school, so doesn't need anything Gucci, but equally I want to get him something that actually works. Is there much to choose between the likes of Lekato, Joyo, etc, or is it just a case of looking at reviews on Amazon and going for it?Ā

Ā

Thanks!Ā

TheĀ Lekato ones are quite good. My guitars and vocalist all use them although the vocal one does drop out on some gigs but I suspect that it's because it's 2.4GHZ and not 5.8 GHZ.Ā  I use a Line 6 wireless which has been faultless but uses AA batteries rather that recharge the transmitter and receiver with a USB charger like theĀ Lekato.

I bought the M-Vave WP-5G system which was ridiculously cheap (around £30 IIRC) and it has been really solid.

I've been using a Lekato WS-70 UHF system for a year and a half now (well, two really, safety net if I forget to charge a set during a double gig weekend as I'm bound to do now and again).Ā  They have never let me down, the only time I've ever had dropouts is when I've pushed the range a bit too much (usually because I've gone round a corner on a walkabout or something daft).

Ā

They're compact, sound good to my cloth ears and I've never felt the need to look around for anything better.

Additional - I've just bought a third set - we've got a gig coming up which is a right PITA to PA - wide open space, speakers nowhere near the desk, punters entrance/exit to the main door and the bogs is on the cable paths - spend most of the time sticking cables down with gaffer tape - F that!Ā  So we're going to use these doodads to connect the speakers to the desk, leaving a set spare for me to continue to do walkabouts and terrorise/amaze the punters.

Ā

I've bought these from eBay and Amazon before, but this time I went straight to Lekato - https://lekatodeal.com/en-uk/products/lekato-ws-70-wireless-guitar-audio-system-transmitter-receiver-70-channels-40m and right now they're having some Black Friday nonsense - got 25% off so an already very reasonable £41 became an even more agreeable £30.75.  Free shipping.  Coming from abroad though, so perhaps the taxman will wipe the grin off my face and take that discount right back off of me, but you never know!

I've got the Harley Benton AirBorne, £44 (although you'd need to pay £10 delivery unless you can spend over £150).

Ā

Works flawlessly, and the battery is great. Lovely wee case too. They do feel a touch flimsy but ive had them for a while and they're still going strong!

I've got the Lekato WS-90 and the M-Vave WP-5G. Both work well, and I'm pretty sure they're identical - I have connected the transmitter of one to the receiver of the other successfully.

Lekato for me. Had them for a year and have been fine for the weekend warrior/pub covers band level that I infest.

Good to hear! Which ones do you have?

I have the 5.8G Lekato system as above and so does my guitarist in our duo. They just work and so far go on working. I think I've had mine for three years. Before that I had the Line6 system with the 2xAA batteries which is still going strong but I preferred the fom of the Lecato ones with no more fiddly battery, covers bought the Lekatos to try and never looked back.Ā

Ā

Hmmm a second pair so I always have some charged.... @neepheidĀ you may have started something.

I had basically these, but with a weird wood grain effect. Rechargeable and sensibly come with a double headed lead so you charge both at onceĀ

they pop up with money-off quite regularly on AmazonĀ

I also have the Lekato WS-50, they have been excellent. After 4 years, full charge is good for 3-4 hours, the only minor gripe is if you forget to charge them!

Thanks for all your input guys! What's the benefit of 5.8Ghz over 2.4Ghz? Is there just less likely to be interference? Stronger signal/less loss?

Less chance of interference at 5.8ghz.

Ā

Or another option is UHF, I might try some Lekato WS-70 UHF mentioned earlier in this thread. Usually UHF is an expensive option but those are £33. UHF has lower latency (<3ms) and better range but can colour the sound a bit - at least that was the complaint with some older ones, new ones seem to get generally good reviews though (although the Lekato also has a lot of 1 star reviews on Amazon for the sound quality).

2.4 has a better range and is slightly less worse in poor line of sight transmission situations. However it has to compete for bandwidth with far more devices especially at crowded gigs, which at the moment makes it far less reliable than 5.8. However that advantage may disappear in the future.

Ā

IME if you are going to be suffering from range issues with a 5.8 device you probably need to be looking at seriously pro wireless systems and not ones based on WiFi.
