Ibanez RG 1989 Made in Japan - Almost perfect but one glaring flaw...

Spotted this one on Reverb a week or two ago and it's been on my mind constantly. Killer looking bass, love the RG shape - hardly ever see it in bass but the guitars are just so timeless, reminds me of the 80s shredders. PJ pickups and a nice looking neck, Gotoh tuners too. It's got my name written all over it, and I'd already be thinking of buying it but for one fatal flaw.

What on Earth is that finish? Glam went out of fashion almost 40 years ago!

These were his in-between moustache days, what a journey...

Some hairspray rock bands would still have been alive and well around '89; the Likes of Poison, for example. Unfortunately for them, a certain band from Seattle upset the apple cart a mere two years later.

That Ibanez is a welcome reminder of a less tasteful age.

I remember going into Musical Exchanges in Brum in the late 80s and lusting after the crackle finished BC Riches, I think Washburn & Kramer did something similar as well.

Hot neon guitars and basses in almost painfully bright pinks and yellows were definitely a thing at around the same time as well.

I don't remember seeing any animal print guitars, but they wouldn't have been out of place.

Then, as mentioned above, grunge pretty much killed all the flamboyant finishes and it feels a bit like fashion wise guitars have been doing the same sensible retro/vintage finish thing for the last 30 years or so.

A mate of mine still curses said Seattle band to this day for stopping him becoming famous.

They didn’t btw.

Not round here it didn't. Buy it and move to Suffolk.
