Hi guys,

I am looking for recommendations on 112 cabs that can handle a 5 String. I need to downsize slightly and find something that will fit into the boot of my Mazda MX5.

Thanks in advance

How loud do you want to go? What amp do you use?

I gig my 5 string basses through an Aguilar TH500 and a Barefaced Super Compact, and it sounds pretty good to my ears, but for mad blues rock (twin reverb) trio's I'll use 2 x 112's. Really there will be a few cabs that will sound good, you just have to find the one you like. The limiting factor might be the size of your boot.

Thanks man.

I use a Quilter V803 as my main amp, and want something as loud as possible but must be able to handle the low B on my 5 String.

Cheers 👍

It depends on what you mean by handle low B string. It is the 30hz to 80hz content that is the concern.

Most modern 12" bass cabs will handle it pretty well with a high pass filter to snuff out the 30hz content and let through some 60hz.

The higher performing ones folks are recommending you can make that 60hz quite loud.

None of them will produce audible 30hz so a HPF is still a very handy thing. A lot of players even take out a bit of the 60 to 80hz. Their cab is too good at making it and the tone gets to be wallowing in lows.

Any quality cab should handle a 5. The key question is how loud do you need to be. Excursion is important at very low frequencies and you need some grunt in your amp (which your Quliter has). LFSYS and BF are safe recommendations, but even my PJBs will do the job at moderate volumes.

A single one of anyone's smaller cabs will not blow the windows out with a low B. The laws of physics, Jim.

If what you have currently does the job - you say you need to downsize slightly - can it be carried in the passenger seat of your MX5? I used to be able to transport a 1x15 bass cab in the passenger seat of my old MGB.

I own 2 Barefaced 210s but mainly only ever use one.   I spoke to Alex originally as I wanted a big driver cab (my previous rig was a Ashdown MAG 210 combo with MAG 115 extension cab and preferred the 15).

However, he talked me into the 210s (they were a new model at the time with his talk of extra excursion in the drivers and the way he did his ports.

I was sceptical at first, but I have never experienced any issues with low Bs on any of my guitars at any volumes, and I can get pretty loud (occasionally).  The pair of the cabs set up like a 410 is immense, but I rarely play gigs that warrant the need for a 2nd cab.

Having said that, I have no idea if it would fit in an MX5 boot, but I would hope so.  My brother has a mk1, but it is buried in storage at the mo, so can't try it for you (plus I'm down south and he's near Newcastle).

It will fit on seat, just unable to fit my bass on top of the speaker without completely blocking the view on the passenger side window.

Cheers for your help!

Does the seat come out easily? It was only 4 bolts on the MG.

Which mx5 do you have? I have a mx5 nd (4th and current generation) and can tell you that a barefaced 110 cab does fit in, two barefaced 110s will not fit in the mx5 (nd) boot so a barefaced 210 will not either.  Some 112 cabs may fit but I would definitely check first if you can. I would expect that many 112 cabs would not be able to fit in. I believe the nc boot is a little bigger.

Anyone know if you can request different colour baffle on the LFSy cabs?

Ask @stevie - he's right here!

I can paint the baffle any colour you like as long as it's British Racing Green. 😀

Only joking.... if you want a different coloured baffle, you just need to give me the paint reference (RAL number ideally). There's no extra charge.
