They were happy with my backing vocals but want me to be louder as sometimes I wasn't triggering the noise gate.

So can't they turn the noise gate down?

Apparently all BV's go through it (me and guitarist) and he's louder, but noisier, than me.

To be fair, as it was my first time singing with them, I was holding back a lot.

Had a practice Tuesday evening with the covers band. Went through four new songs that may make the setlist hopefully. Pink Floyd Money, Jackson Browne Dr My Eyes, David Bowie Space Oddity and The Who Won't Get Fooled Again....really enjoyed them and all sounding pretty good for a first attempt. Played through a bassrig super vintage with my BB2000 and got a pretty good Entwhistle  sound, I was going for the isolated Shepperton sound. Eb3 for JB and Bowie numbers. We're a long way off playing these out but a good start.

Nice choice of songs there. I use Money as my soundcheck as it covers all 4 strings and isn't busy and the SE can easily set things up to it.

Got that tip on here somewhere.

Had a good rehearsal last night.

Pirate Studios are pretty good and the air con and back line all worked fine. The Rumble 500 was really sounding great- cheap feeling controls but really serves up the sonic goods!

The guitarist and main songwriter tried out a couple of new numbers and one if them defo has potential. I’m not sure about the other, too similar to some of his other ones but good to work on.

The Dingwall is just absolutely bloody epic. I’m growing to love it more and more each time I play it. For the first time I’m really starting to explore creative potential of tone shaping on a bass. This Neve unit is so musical- boosting the low end a couple of notches when using the Bridge pickup on its own makes the thing really usable and even whacking the Bass up full is still musical! Bonkers but the other guys LOVED 100% bass!

It was hard telling them I’m stepping away when my evening classes start in late September but hopefully we’ll get a couple of gigs in by then.

Getting home was a total nightmare. I was planning to get the overground back from Camden but signaling problem s meant I ended up walking all the way home from London Bridge which took an hour. Got in at 1am and had to do a 10k race this morning!!!!

very tired now

Decent rehearsal on Sunday, and Shout is in the set list for our gig in Wakefield which is good. Still enjoying the practice studio in general but at one point there was an awful eggy smell that put us off for a few minutes, so next time I'll be booking a room away from the toilets (nobody in the band claimed responsibility, which they would have if it was one of them!). Looking forward to the next gig because it's been a few months since the last one.

Second full rehearsal with my friend’s glam startup. Nice big room at Pirate in Reading, which we need because he brings an electronic kit. We have some backing tracks and a click, so we did the whole rehearsal on in-ears - guitarist used a Pod Go, I plugged my bass straight into a Hi-Z input on my XR18. We didn’t need any of the kit in the room but it’s proved impossible to hire a village hall in a suitable location!

I’d say it went really well, and for once everyone got there in good time and remembered to bring everything they needed! I recorded most of it to Reaper on my laptop with a view to editing out the chat and uploading rough mix on mp3 to Google Drive so that each person can listen critically to their own playing and singing.

I've depped with a band 'we don't do rehearsals' so it works for some bands.

I find working on PA setups and arrangements in a relaxed environment brings many benefits.

Rehearsal is when You and your bandmates come together at a place where is possible to play songs for your upcomming gig to make them sound better or create a new songs for your band.

The two groups I've played with over the past few years are 90% original material so a lot of what I've been doing is working out songs.

Thanks, I will pass that on to our singer.

Tonight we all sat in a circle, kept the volume right down and deep dived into the arrangements for three originals.

We had all come up with our perspectives on WhatsApp in advance.

I used my fretless and it opened some new sonic avenues.

We got into some theory which was fun. I am turning a D into a Bm7 🙂... but only sometimes and i makes a big differenceto feel. We had long discussion on how to move in and out of solos and decided to end a song in Em on A major to accentuate the mbiguous lyrical ending.

It was pointed out that one if my basslines sounded like Dani California so I ended up quoting that instead.

Another song, relegated a really nice line I came up with using a different inversion of each chord to the chorus and came up with a mwah-enriched melodic line for verses.

Similar attention given to drums, guitars and vocals, as well as overall timing and structure.

Was fun working as a group and achieving some major improvements by thinking from an audience perspective. None of us could have achieved this alone. We aren't the beatles but still very satisfying.
