I've done both in the past. Working on material with another group at the moment with an eye to a cd and a few live gigs.

I do enjoy writing basslines for original songs. Really interesting. Not done much collaborating though, usually either write the whole thing or put a bassline to someone else’s…. If they want!

The drummer from one of my old bands from the 90's contacted me to ask if I could play a gig with them as sadly their bassist had died suddenly.

Went along for a practice last night and was blown away how good they were. All sixtys covers but not many that i'd ever played before or was even slightly aware of.

I'd been practicing at how for the last week or so but still couldn't nail some of them. A Doors number and a Moody Blues one left me just sitting out while I recorded it to play to at home. Also wanted me to do Penny Lane but in a different key to original so that's on my to do list. A number by The Creations sounded great and Summer in the city went well but my fave of the night was Riders on the storm... nailed it imho. Lots to learn for next week but up for the challenge. 

 

Got a Zoom H2n recording of Making Time by The Creation from this practice. I'd never heard the song before so had a listen on YouTube to a live version....I think overplay a bit here but I was enjoying it so much. Didn't get the end right but plenty of time to sort that hopefully. Was using EB3. into fender rumble head through ampeg cab.

I play double bass in a Morris band, and when the accordionist isn't available I play accordion. But I got fed up practising accordion wearing builders' ear defenders, and lugging a heavy accordion around. So Thursday's band practice was the first run out for my new (to me) Roland electronic accordion. It went well - it plays much the same as a regular accordion, and the band were happy with the sound it makes.

Sounds like a good choice of 60's classics there. 

Maybe turn into a permanent position altho circumstances maybe a bit odd at first.

We had a very good practice last night.

 

Part of last night was getting our sound and mix sorted. And without much effort it was very good. Especially when none of us have much experience or have dealt with that end of things.

 

We're a new band and have our first gig in a few weeks. We went through the songs we have and they sounded really good. One of the new ones to the list, played it first time, it sounded like we'd been playing it for months.

 

Very happy all round. Can't wait to hear the recording the drummer made.

We always record our rehearsals - mainly to be able to listen back individually to the progress made, to be able to play along to what might be different arrangements to the originals, and also to catch and moments of brilliance!!! Good luck with the new band - it's always great to be making music with mates.....😎👍🤘
