warwickhunt Posted April 14, 2009 Share Posted April 14, 2009 I'm presently looking for a lightweight (recurring shoulder problem) BO necked 'downsized' Jazz style bass (Sadowsky, Lakland DJ, Mike Lull), which lead me to wonder... I find the Jazz body just a touch too big for my stature and prefer a P bass body size (or 'downsized' Jazz) but I like the Jazz bass tone and in all of my years of messing about with basses I can't think that I have ever dropped a set of Jazz pups (obviously after the appropriate routing) into a P bass body? If I were to also put a Jazz neck onto said J pup equipped P body I can see no apparent reason why I wouldn't have the bass I wanted (assuming the P bass body was light enough). Does anyone have a J pup equipped P bass? I know that quite a few manufacturers do a P bass with an added J pup in the bridge position and the Aerodyne and M Hoppus bass are a Jazz with a P pup but off the top of my head I can't think of a manufacturer making the bass I've outlined. One final thought. The bass as described, 'should' essentially sound like a Jazz irrespective of body shape (after all, the various permutations/copies of Jazzes, sound pretty much like Jazzes), which kind of answers a question posed to me the other day about what makes a Jazz sound like a Jazz and a Precision sound like a Precision. I tried to describe the multitude of differences between the two basses but in fact it boils down to pretty much one factor... the pup construction and the position it is placed! The bass is somewhere in Manchester now - I've lost track of it's owner. I can recall however it did indeed sound like a Jazz as the pickup placement was precisely measured. This leads me to believe that the overall body size and shape has little to do with the end result once plugged in. Trust this helps you in your deliberations.
