barneyg42 Posted January 4, 2009 Share Posted January 4, 2009 On this day 23 years ago(my god where has the time gone!) we lost possibly one of the most charismatic frontmen to walk the Earth. I only saw Lizzy once, this was on the Thunder and Lightning tour and although I didn't think it was as good a line up as the classic Live and Dangerous line up never the less it was a fantastic spectacle. I bumped into Phil in a pub in Mortlake some time after this.........you know I was just tongue tied, there was so much I wanted to say but I never got the chance, just hello Phil.....orrright was the reply, and that was it. He'd sat next to my dad on a flight back from Argentina or somewhere in South America all the way to Manchester and my dad (who is not a rock fan) thought he was a really nice guy. We were all stood together at the baggage carousel when Phil and Scott Gorham came over to chat to my dad. All I remember was this tall guy (Phil) in a black leather suit wearing patent pink winkle picker shoes. I just could not take my eyes off his shoes as they were the most amazing things I'd seen. He was very friendly and I still have the guitar pick he gave me all those years ago. I really had no idea who he was at the time. But now... The most charismatic front man I have EVER seen. Frist time I saw a laser as well, wrote the words 'Thin Lizzy' in mid air then spun it round. Real Star Wars effects in those days! No slouch with the bass, either. 'Anyone out here tonight got any Irish in them? Any of the girls want a bit more Irish in them?' (from memory, maybe not word perfect...) Great voice , bags of charisma,could rock on his precision like nobody and most importantly songwriting skills . He was a great loss and the worlds not as much fun without him ! We went to see an exhibition by IBM about this thing called a "Micro Chip" (I still have the credit card size piece of plastic that held a micro chip with an IBM logo underneath, that was given out as a promo). Annnnnywaaay, we were allowed out to sight-see around Bond Street, as we were making our way to Harrods, a white Ford Escort was speeding up a side street towards us at the pavement on the main road, the car stopped and just touched a few of us. We all started to kick off untill we saw that it was Phil Lynott driving, at which point we all started to shout hi Phill, we love you and such like. What I didn't say in my original post was that I bumped into him in the toilet, although it was the corridor in and out so I wasn't tongue tied cos I had me old fella in my hand! He was with quiet intimate little group of people in the pub so it just didn't seem right to barge in looking for autographs etc......hindsight and all that! I had the pleasure of meeting him round the back of the Birmingham odeon during the renagade tour he thanked me for supporting the band & shook my hand. Then later on during the gig when i was standing down the front i threw my Thin lizzy scarf towards the stage, he picked it up, wore it for one song, then threw it back to me & gave me his famous grin & the clenched fist that he always did during live shows. I've done loads of his tunes over the years and that's as big a compliment as I could pay him. I got to see him only once , standing with the mental notebook out! Let's not be too sentimental over the way of his demise though. We didn't 'lose' him. At a time when the world had started to realise full well the damage drugs can do to people , Phil chose to carry on destroying himself - with how much regard for people that surrounded and loved him I don't know. If the difference between tragedy and the merely tragic is inevitability I don't regard his death as the former because he could have done something about it. He alone had control over what he allowed to become inevitable. Sorry Phil - you were the stuff of legend and a musical hero of mine - but you went and f***ed your life up , nobody else.
