1. Drummer needed asap.....to jump on board with established gigging mod covers band. If you can rock The WHO and jam THE JAM please get in touch soon as poss. This is an excellent opportunity for the right person, the ability to learn setlists quick and have an input is what's needed. Backing vocals would be good but not essential.. Own kit essential as well as own transport. Phone Gaz-07807012076.
2. The code to start the revoloution? Toddler at the keyboard? Having a fit or stroke and trying to summon help? Or...he's as mad as a box of frogs.
3. Thanks for posting the extra tracks Syed, there's not much stuff that gets me into full on head bobbing mode, but the grooves you lads are laying down there certainly does. I'll be shaking my ass next (not a pretty sight I assure you )
4. I play as much as I can but some days not at all due to shift work. I don't structure anything and usually play in shorts bursts, 20 minutes or so, then go and do something else and come back to it later. I'm learning some Disco/Funk stuff at the moment and working on my slap & pop, Mr MarloweDk is proving very helpful with that, so I just learn what I feel like learning at that moment rather than forcing myself to do anything. I'm not in a band at the moment so I don't have the pressure of deadlines to meet when learning stuff. I reckon I play a lot better than I did when I was younger purely because of the learning resources that are available now via the internet, mainly the good folk on here sharing techniques and ideas and also Youtube.
5. Brilliant, loved it. 'When' is obviously getting the public vote, 1,776 plays!! Is 'Open Your Eyes And See' one of the tracks that has been mixed? Would love to hear that alongside the others.
6.
Another that's just occured to me is the bass player for Elvis Costello early on in his career. Some great bass lines on tracks like Oliver's Army. No idea who he is though (and before someone says it - I did quickly google it!)
That would be Bruce Thomas ,I think.
7. Prompted by The Admirals thread on underated bass players I'm listening to Hatful Of Rain-The best of Del Amitri. Some happy memories from the 90's, Mrs Z's wondering what I'm grinning at
8. Just seen this B302 on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Guild-B302-70s-Ameri...A1%7C240%3A1318 Don't know if that helps at all.
9. That does sound like a useful piece of kit. I wish I had the talent and brains to be able to knock something up from bits. It would be a brave person indeed that ever plugged anything into the mains that I'd been tinkering with
10. My first bass was a 60's Epiphone semi-acoustic that I had swapped a 1974 , ash bodied, Fender Strat for around about 1989. I went on to swap the Epiphone for a solid body no-name plank. No idea how much the Epiphone would be worth now but I saw a similar Strat on an Australian collector's web site last year valued at £3,500 GBP (after conversion from$Aus) I had bought the Strat for £80 as it needed a re-fret. Bought a second-hand Columbus P copy after that for £40- £68.40 today
11. Would have loved to come but will be working on the 15th. I've used all my holidays up for this financial year unfortunately
12. Hello from a far from sunny Rotherham.

14.
But what about the break angle? If the string anchor point is a further behind the saddle length-wise, or further from the body height-wise, then the saddle itself will get less downward force from the string to hold it in place. Also - how well are the saddles held in place before the string is put on? On the stock bridge on my MIM Jazz, the spring wasn't long enough to hold the saddle firmly in place and that used to cause some weird noises... probably just vibrations from the spring itself, but it went away once I replaced it with a Hipshot B.... I've seen some bridges have an extra screw that goes through the side of the bridge, and then presses against the end of the saddle for either the top or bottom string... this clamps the saddles in place once you've set the intonation and helps prevent any unwanted vibrations from the bridge. Is it possible to simulate something like this by wedging something between the saddles to try and lock the saddles more firmly in place... it might at least confirm that it's definitely the bridge that the noise is coming from???
I've just done some checking on this. The angle of the string as it comes out of the back of the bridge and onto the saddle seems about the same, 5mm as it comes out and 1cm as it reaches the saddle. The saddles are also set to the same distance on both bridges, ie both are set to the intonation, E saddle closest to back of ther bridge and each saddle slightly further forward after that. The Gotoh is chunkier but less than 1mm taller than the stock bridge. Would such a small increment have an effect? The Gotoh also has grooves for the saddle's grub screws while the stock bridge does not so the saddles are pretty stable where the stock ones slide a little when you restring. The springs and screws on the Gotoh are more substantial than the stock and the spring on the G string is not at full stretch so it's all held together very well and nothing is at one extreme or the other on either bridge. Thanks for the advice so far guys, it's much appreciated.
15. My local Tesco sells this Bernard dark lager. Same sort of bottle as Grolsch but tastes more like a fizzy stout. Very nice and straplocks to boot!
16. Hi Prosebass and Stoo. I have tried flatwounds, nickel and stainless steel, old string, new strings, all sorts of combinations really. I didn't notice the 'clank' with the flats but I prefer the zingyness of the stainless for the funk and slapping stuff, I've got flats on the other bass for soul, blues and reggae. Both bridges are set up to the same height, 3mm gap between fret and bottom of E string which I find comfortable all round, and the saddles are pretty much level on both bridges. I did consider if it was uneven frets that were the problem but the noise is just not there with the stock bridge, no matter how hard I spank it.
17.
Well, in some ways I'm a fairly experienced player - yet in other ways I'm really a beginner (never had lessons, probably very sloppy technique). I would regularly read a beginners' forum. Having quite a bit of gigging and some recording experience I reckon I'd contribute in areas where I could (eg budget gear good enough for gigging).
+1 to that. I've been playiing on and off for 20-odd years but I've learned more form Basschat and Youtube in the last few months than from anywhere else in all that time. It does take some searching for in the threads but the info is usually all there. Having some basic stuff all bundled together either as a beginner's forum or more comprehensive Wiki would be great and as Adrenochrome points out details on budget gear good enough for gigging would be of help to more than those who are just starting out. My desires are high-end but my budget is definitely at the other end of the scale.
18. For the last couple of months I've been dabbling with slap & pop but I've encountered a problem I suspect may be to do with the Gotoh 201 bridge on my Squire VMJ. When I pop on the G string the there is a horrible metallic 'clank' sound that rings out. I wouldn't say it's clear enough to describe as a harmonic, just a ringing clank if that makes sense. It's the same on the D string but to a lesser extent and you can hear it unamplified so it's not anything to do with the electrics or amp etc. Being new to slapping my first thought was that it must be my technique so I did some listening and learning and refined my style a bit, choking the popped notes off a bit more than I was doing before. This lessened the 'clank' a bit but it's still definitely there. Next I tried a few different types of string, problem still there. Last week I replaced the Gotoh with the stock bridge. Guess what? Problem gone, no more 'clank'. Just to make sure I tried the Gotoh again yesterday. 'Clank' returns so back on goes the stock bridge. The Gotoh is brilliant for fingerstyle and pick playing and it looks the dog's danglies but it's just not a happy bunny with the slapping. Has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas? The bridges are acclaimed for their sustain qualities but is it this that is causing the problem or is it still my technique and the bridge is highlighting this? The noise is obviously worse when I'm in heavy duty attack mode Flea/Louis Johnson style but even on more subtle Marcus Miller type stuff I can still hear it. At the moment I'm getting exactly the sound I want with the stock bridge and stainless steel strings so I'm not overly worried now, just confused really. Is the problem the bridge or my technique and the lower quality bridge is hiding something I need to address?
19.
There's a video overview of this pedal at http://www.bassplayer.tv/ Select Basses & Gear from list in left hand pane, then select "Multi FX Pedals" from same place: you'll see a list of compared multi FX pedals, including the Boss ME-20B Cheers, E
That video is much better than the one on the Soundslive site. Wish I'd seen it sooner it would have tipped the balance for me to buy one a bit earlier I think. Still messing around with mine. I've learned how to do the tap dancing bit to switch the patch banks up and down now
20. Great stuff. An 11 piece band sounds a logistical nightmare though. Do you all rehearse together or in smaller groups?
21. +1. A true Rocker. Sadly missed.
22. Had one for a couple of days, a late xmas pressie to myself. It sounds ok so far, much better tone wise than the Zoom B1 I managed to kill somehow but lacking the drum machine the B1 has. The snyth bass patches aren't up to much but you can play around with things and alter them to your liking, not got that far yet, I'm still getting used to it. I did expect better for the price but having said that it does have all the bits I want at the moment- compressor, tuner, wha pedal and an input for CD/MP3 players. I've sent for a lead off e bay so I can plug the lap top into it hopefully and jam along with/learn tracks. Overall it has improved the sound of my crappy Carlsbro 55 amp and I'm having some fun with the fretless/Jaco type patch. A very brief , and cynical, overview of the pre-set tones is that they will give you a pale immitation of: Jaco Marcus Miller Boostsy Flea & Lemmy The main problem I've found with it so far is that each of the 10 patches in the memory mode gives you three different sounds, one assigned to each pedal so if you need to change between patches mid song and the sounds aren't in the same bank you have to: stop playing, bend down and press the up/down button slip a shoe off and press it with your big toe or buy an additional Boss footswitch that allows you to go up and down the patch banks! I may be wrong on that as I've not fully delved into all the ins and outs so far but that's how it seems to me at this stage. It's nice and sturdy (metal case) and I was seduced by the fact that it's a well known brand so should (fingers crossed) be reliable after the dissapointment with the Zoom. Sorry it's not an in-depth review, just my first impressions really but I think once I've figured out how to edit/store& recall the patches it has the potential to be a useable and versatile tool.
23. There was a post in November from noirpunk who'd just got an endorsement with Vintage. It's in there somewhere in the 'General' topics. I can't work out how to do a link.
24. Great song, I'm a big fan of Weller but I think his solo stuff is a bit hit and miss, this one's a cracker though. You can get the lyrics and chords from 911tabs.com. It's a pretty simple riff that repeats through most of the song so you should be able to pick up where the changes are from this. Sounds great played on a flatwound strung bass.
25. I keep trying with Jaco, he's starting to grow on me thanks to Come on, Come over- funky as f*ck and , please correct me if I'm wrong, Sam & Dave on vocals.
