1.
He did too , with Mrs Ziggenpuss. Nice to meet you , mate - and thanks for the Rustic Robin or whatever it was called!! Hope you didn't think me too much of a misery talking to you for 5 mins then vanishing like some big shot. Got the call to get ready etc and had to go. Not the best attended I've seen Rudi's - Hey Ho. I thought our Doc B support outstripped our ZZ trib too. Been a few weeks since we Eliminated and couldn't quite get it going properly.
Nice to meet you too Dave and we had an excellent night despite the low turn out, pre-xmas slump and all that I suppose. Loved both Dr Blue and ZZ Eliminator, you lads are quality musicians and put on a great show. It's been a while since I've seen a band that have the kind of banter between the band that you do, they normally just mumble the song name and get on with it. I'm still chuckling about the jazz chord joke, must be the way you tell em. Even Joe the sound man was smiling, never seen that before! I'll definitely come and see you again when you're at Rudi's and we'll have a longer chat now I can tell the difference between you and Rod Best wishes Craig
2. As long as it's not too pricey to produce. Who doesn't love a freebie? It would certainly endear you to the audience but they might expect stuff at every gig then! Maybe limit the calenders to your regular fans who put the effort in to come an see you and badges etc, as previously suggested, for other punters.
3. Apologies if it's been posted before but I thought some folks might like this slice of New Orleans R&B. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrbT5FWuTXs
4.
I love playing funky choppy waccky wahwah guitar,i also like playing nick drake.
What sort of sounds do you get out of him?
5. Big fan of flats for Motown, Stax and Reggae...oh, and Iron Maiden stuff too!
6. Are they back to the full original line up yet or is Dammers still being arsey? The Specials were probably my first favourite band aged 10 or so. Over a weekend all the lads at junior school became mini rude boys, tassled loafers, 2-tone tonik sta-prest, Fred Perry and a grade 4 hair cut. Happy days.
7. Hello Anne Marie from another recently converted lurker.
8. Now found the dimensions thanks to the pinned topic at the top. DOHH!! But thank you anyway Protium. These appear to be the 'compact' ones advertised on a few sites so obviously require a much smaller peg hole. (Goes to stand in corner looking shamefaced)
9. Does anyone know if Gotoh GB707 machine heads i.e this type. would be a driect replacement for a Squire VMJ? I can't find any dimensions posted anywhere so unsure if they would slot straight in or if the headstock would require drilling out. Also what size and weight are they compared to the standard tuners? They look a bit smaller than the clover leaf ones so would they look 'interesting' or just plain daft?
10. I vote no. I use fingers 95% of the time these days and like to think that I can produce a variety of tones depending on how I use the right hand. Wouldn't want a bit of wood taking the credit for that.
11. I started on guitar and when I joined a band we struggled to find a bass player. I got 'volunteered' as the least able guitarist and have never looked back. I've still got an acoustic at home and just bought a cheap ukelele but I consider myself as a bass player first and foremost. The only slight regret I,ve got is that when I was 'converted' I swapped a 1974 L series Fender strat for an Epiphone semi-acoustic ( no idea what model it was, cherry red burst with one PU and coated flatwounds). Unfortunately it only sounded right when doing Start! or Town Called Mailce. It didn't cut it for Clash type stuff and I couldn't afford a 2nd bass so I then ( I'm weeping at the bitter memory here) swapped the Epiphone for a no-name solid body plank with four strings. Lesson well and truly learned
12.
In South Yorks - if you ask for a fishcake you get a poncy mashed potato thing the size of a 10p piece. You have to ask for a patty which sounds stupid , you musn't say please or thankyou , and you have to have a fight with somebody while you wait.
Don't know what they serve for fish cakes in Barnsley & Doncaster but these sound like 'Rissoles' to me. Sheffield & Rotherham are same as West Yorks fishcakes. Some fine select places even serve 'Scallops', one slice of 'tater and covered in batter just so folks think your rich enough to eat real fish cakes
13. I had the same reservations about set ups but finally took the plunge a few months ago. I thought it would be worth learning how to do it rather than shelling out £30 + for something that I was sure was within my capabilities. With truss rod adjustments just make quarter turns at a time and make sure that the allan key (if that is what your bass is adjusted with) is sat squarely in the socket to avoid rounding it off. The creaking noise the wood makes can be a bit scary at first but it can also help you to not be too heavy handed. It's a case of trial and error, you make an adjustment and it feels ok, then once evrything has settled it can feel totally different and you need to reverse what you have done. All adds to the confidence building though. My bass is now set up just right for me and I've no qualms about getting stuck in. good luck Craig
14. Thanks to all for the welcome. Eyup Monz, Barnsley lad eh? I'm originally a Dee-Dah, (for those not familiar with the rare languages of the North, that's what Barnsley folk call Sheffielders 'cos of how we speak -as in "Nah den, dee, dah Ba****d"-translation " I say, you there you person of questionable parentage) Dr. Dave, Rudis is my usual chioce of watering hole on the rare occasions when me and the Mrs get out, shift work being the bugger that it is plus the current economic squeeze etc but I'll come and say hello if I manage to make it. Have you played at Rudi's before? It's not very big (ooh err Mrs) but there's usually a good crowd of decent people in there. The Chav brigade seem to give it a miss and head further up the road. I'm usually in early when the bands are setting up and sound checking 'cos half of the evenings entertainment is watching Joe the sound man annoying the f**k out of the bands! Never heard him produce a bad front of house sound yet though, knows his onions, the lad. Saw Twin Lizzy there a few weeks back and he was a bit reluctant to give up his position to their own sound guy, thought it was gonna end in tears.
15. Bootsy Collins- Back In The Day-Best of & Straight Outta P University. Waiting for The One Giveth, The Count Taketh Away to arrive from flea Bay. Nice sleazy funk.
16. Hi all, I've been lurking for a while and finally decide to join this fantastic community. A bit about me- I'm 39, male, and currently livining in Rotherham S.Yorkshire. I started playing guitar at 17 and joined a punk/new wave type band a year after playing original stuff with heavy influences from The Jam, The Clash, Elvis Costello etc. Problem with the band was- no bass player! So, as the least able guitarist I was 'volunteered' for the duties. Not a happy bunny at first but after nailing a few of Foxton's line, Start, Down in the tube station, In the city and getting into Reggae via The Clash I became a proud plucker of the fat four! My musical tastes are very eclectic and I apreciate most stuff except plastic Stock Aitkin & Waterman/X factor type tripe. I've had quite a long tea break from playing and not played live for 15 years or so. In the interim I bought a Peavy Milestone III and a Carlsbro Baseline 55 to plonk about on at home. A few months ago I decided to get back into it and start playing again so I bought myself a Squire VMJ, now I've never owned anything 'high end' so I can't really compare but to me it's the mutt's nuts. I've got my passion back for playing again and will hopefully look for a covers band next year when I've got round to getting a decent rig. I've learned so much already from the knowledgable folks on this site and I hope to chip in now & again. Cheers Craig
