Wow, thanks for all the kind offers, guys. :) Also Mr Grangur of this parish says he's bringing his Streamer round at some point. Hooray!

I own a Corvette Neck Thru $$ and also a Spector.

I loved my Warwick for a long period from when I bought it. But I was looking for something lighter/easier to jump around with and after buying a Jazz, and then the Spector....... The Spector does it for me hands down.

Spector plus points are light weight, wider more comfier neck, snappier sounding.

Warwick plus points is the Warwick tone.

I would offer for you to come and try out both, but they are leftys!

Agree with Cosmo on the growl
I agree with the Spector/Warwick growl/rock aggression comments, but have mainly spectors cos the curved body shape fits around my beer gut nicely ...

You do realise if you buy a Corvette people point and snigger and say "look at him with the funny horn! " , lots more sniggering.
Yeah, one rehearsal I found myself inbetween songs mindlessly caressing said horn...

I don’t know if you need more opinions but here goes.

Since the late 80s I always wanted a Warwick. They just looked so ridiculously out of reach to a teenager and just oozing quality. I bought my first Warwick (Thumb NT5 89) in 97 and have not looked back. I found it very versatile and as has been said that growl is just like a menacing force. From then on I just wanted an 89 6 string fretless. I found that on the Warwick forum (it was for sale here as well) and that bass just sounds huge. It can take on so many sounds and I have to say other musicians think that it just sounds amazing going from funky 16th note groove to upright sounding thump. What I have found out with the Thumbs is that you get a lot of the differences in sound with the right hand technique (and possibly left hand as well). I would recommend an early Thumb if the budget allows that.

I bought FNA Jazzman to be a gigging bass and that bass has served me very well. I would not say its in the same class as the Thumbs but its a great instrument and gives a great range of tones. Has never failed me yet and I never take a back up.

If I was looking for an entry level instrument into the world of Warwick I would probably get an older German made Corvette and take it from there. Quality basses and at the moment very low prices (maybe not so after this thread).

I'm gravitating towards this thinking. I want 'the sound', but I don't want to spend a fortune only to find I'm not into it... I think if I get on with an older active German Corvette (which apparently have chunkier necks) then that should be enough 'proper' Warwick for me to be getting on with. Now, to word my 'Wanted' ad...

'Older German sought, preferably oiled, must be active...'
'Would also consider younger passive Korean with slim neck...'

Noooooooo. Warwicks before 2000 had necks that were slim in both directions.

A good example from this 'ere Basses for Sale forum. I'd be all over this sucker if I didn't already have a Corvette:

Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with bagsieblue, other than with him living in Chorley and me in Manchester, it's very likely that he shares my weakness for pie and chips. Just a theory I'm putting out there.

Thank you for the cross reference.....
Yep - I, of course, do have a weakness for pie and chips.

Holy mother of God, it's getting worse. I just spotted this. I'll need to sell something, but what??
Do you think Bass Direct will do a part-ex on a 12-year-old boy? He's house-trained and everything...

Mark at Bass Direct used to work for Warwick so knows a lot about them but it'd be fair (and polite) to say that they're not his favourite basses....

Anyway, I have played some Rock Bass Warwicks and although terrific value for money, they just don't sound the same to my ears or feel as nice as the German or the Korean ones. I would look out for a second hand German one if possible - some incredible bargains to be had on here. I have basses from the "fat neck" period but never thought they were baseball bat necks at all. I can still whizz up and down them to add too many notes.

They are quite heavy. I have some FNA Jazzman basses and I love them. You don't see them come up for sale often but the massive humbucker on them is incredibly punchy but you can still blend to the warm neck pickup. I also have an active Corvette which weighs a tonne but has crisp tones thanks to the bubinga wood, like a Thumb. Incredibly clear, and with a low B to die for. My FNAs have fantastic low Bs too, so I would recommend 34 scale instead of 32 as a PS Star Bass I have doesn't ring as clearly (semi hollow doesn't help but it's a 32).

I can do some video sound samples if you want? What sort of rig do you run through?

Yup, bubinga gives fantastic tone but it does weigh some.

I have a swamp ash corvette from 2005 and it's very light indeed, especially for a 5-string.

I final thing I must add...

10 years ago when I started getting into fretless bass bass I tried a lot of Warwicks of different types and found that with one exception, the natural (waxed/oiled?) wood ones were IMO horrible to play. I have never come across necks that have been more sticky feeling on any bass, and there were trade show examples which are there to tempt the dealers and public into spending their money and therefore ought to be the very best of the best.

The one that was nice to play was a Jack Bruce Cream Reunion Signature, but that came with a completely unrealistic £4k+ price tag...

+1 - I forgot about the Jack Bruce signature Warwick - by far the best Warwick I ever tried & not the £4k+ model :)

Well that sounds pretty good! When you say 'too small' John, do you mean it's a short scale? :)

Edit: Looks like you were bang on with the 'Marmite' comment! ;)

No Mark, full 34" but the SG like body is lost on my belly :(
Hmm, if that's the case I'd be likely to have the same problem. :D
Having said that, Andy Irvine is no stranger to the sweet trolley by the look... ;)

Burgundy Red is nice this time of year :) definitely worth trying but I don't know where you'd be able to

Looks like a nice thing. It's a bit more than I wanted to spend, really. But it's a nice thing! Something a bit 'Wal' about it.
Like you say, my problem is how to try the number of Warwicks I need to try to be able to make a proper decision.
Definitely, for me it is a bit different to the other Warwicks, but still retains their individuality, I'm not so keen on the flatish fretboard, (20" they say) or the big frets, but certainly a good player & some sweet tones.
