The "whatever" club

Always been a bit bemused by the "clubs" on Bass Talk and similar forums. It just seems to be an attempt at elitism that's only one step away from the snobbery of the awful Rick Resource forum. Which reminds me of something I find a bit ironic - one of the best websites for Rickenfaker fans is the "spotting a faker" one run by a Rick fanatic who hates anything but Mr Hall's often iffy originals.

I am not a fan of the clubs onTalkbass. Fine if it fits in with your herding instinct, but in general those threads become so long that it is next to impossible to find the information that you need in them. I rather have it in bite-sized chunks as it is over here. :)

I agree. Those mega-long threads are nearly impossible to find anything in, and anytime I've posted a question in one its been lost amongst all the noise of 18 other ongoing discussions and three sets of new bass pictures.

Herding instinct ... cliquey...twee...snobbery...elitism...vanity

Seems to me that on the one hand there are people who want post in a brand-specific thread and on the other there's people who have a worryingly judgmental view of such a harmless activity.

Is it that some feel 'excluded'? Do they constitute a clique of their own? Should there be a 'Members who hate clubs club?' Beats me..

In any event, I imagine that the only obstacle would be a reluctance by the management to pin such a thread, in which case the [s]soon-come[/s] now launched 'Japcrap Commodore Semi-Acoustic Owners (Past and Present) Club' will simply have to float through life unpinned. . ;)

I don't think we could call them guilds though. What about fans of Guild basses? The Guild guild (or guild of Guilds) would seem a little inelegant to say the least.

Snazzy with a hint of gravitas.

The problem with Talkbass is that it is far too materialistic. The emphasis is on what equipment people have got or are going to get and not enough on more broad concepts to do with actually playing the bass or appreciating other players . That is where Basschat scores over Talkbass... for now. If Basschat went down the Hondo Club route ect, then it is only a matter of time before that would erode what makes Basschat good, or at least what makes it better than Talkbass. What's more, it is also only a matter of time before the Musicman club would be embroiled in a civil war between the pre Ernie Ball faction and the post Ernie Ball crew. A heated discussion over whether the preamp in the new Stingrays sounds the same as the old ones ( it doesn't) would boil over and lead to the Basschat equivalent of what happened in the former Yugoslavia., And then we would all be sorry.

Is that why far more people are voting in the Barefaced poll than the Composition Competition? :P

Yeah, but when I say actually playing the bass , I don't actually mean to the extent that you would play proper music and songs on it and stuff like that. That would be bordering on , well, something or other, and not what this hobby is all about. If I wanted to play music I would be out doing it. I'm here to talk about playing the bass, not to actually play it. That would make no sense at all. I might ( might) go see my G.P about my erectile dysfunction, but I'm not necessarily going to give her a demonstration and ask for marks out of ten . Do you see what I mean? That is essentially how I see Basschat.

It's far easier to look at 1 thread containing 500 posts about XYZ, than to try and track down 500 threads.

It's not rocket science.
Yup.

I think some people need to lighten up and understand the word 'club' doesn't mean funny handshakes and all that.

Yes. In fact I voted in the Barefaced poll but so far haven't voted in the Composition Competition. It's easier to read one post and have a knee-jerk reaction to it than listen to (say) ten pieces of music and choose your favourite. That takes time and effort. So there it is.

The thing that really bugs me about the 'club' threads on TB is that it destroys the forum, because as others have suggested, you end up with forums within forums, and you have to fish through 10+ 'club' threads before you find a thread of interest.

Having said that, I can understand the benefit of bass-specific threads. I wanted to find out more about the Cowpoke Precision I bought a few months ago, and sure enough there's a Cowpoke club on TB. From there I was eventually able to find things out such as what the different pre-amp controls did.

I think if BC were to have 'club' threads, then they should be stuck on a separate sub-forum, so that they don't pollute the browsing experience that we all love here on BC.

I'm not adverse to 'club' threads, in fact I joined a few on TB before I discovered BC and even started one! To be fair we already have a club type thing with the various 'show your (insert bass type)' in the gear porn section, it's no different except that there are no membership numbers and, therefore, no admin which must be a bit of pain really. If we have them then I'll no doubt join one or two, but if we don't I won't lose any sleep feeling that BC is lacking in any way.

There isn't anything stopping people trying to start clubs if they want, is there? I assumed the reason there aren't any is not many people would bother to join.

As has been said already, I can't see much difference between clubs and the Gear Porn section, except there's no numbers. If anyone wants information, it's far easier to start a thread and ask, rather than trawl through 40 pages of people asking for a number.

The trouble with TB is that you have to put up with Americans and that means you have to sift through such a lot of banal ( bloody anal ) crap.
As a resource for info, it can be very very good, tho.
You have to determine who likes the sound of their own voice too much and who actually knows what they are talking about...
which is not unkown on most forums...but TB does have very big potential as a knowledge base... IMO.

Which, actually, is the whole point.
