New instruments attract a premium if they are deliberately damaged to make them look old, while old instruments attract a premium if they are undamaged so that they look new! You can now buy saxophones and trumpets that have been relic'd so that they appear that they have been left outside for a couple of weeks. Absolutely daft. I'm intending to thin out my collection, so will have a tough time finding which ones are old enough to need cleaning up, and which ones are new enough to need distressing!
