1. Nice bit of eye candy ! (..+1 on loving the shoes too )
2.
I disagree re the Stagg, IMO you'd be better off using an imaginary DB, the Stagg feels nothing like any DB I've ever played
This is very true - its not so bad standing but sitting and trying to get the fingerboard in the same angle as my DB involved making up a foam cradle. At the end of the day there probably is no substitute for a DB especially given the volume of a DB body but thats the thing EUBs are EUBs and not DBs!
3. You need to go into the very first post at the top and edit that. You will need full editor and you can alter the title.
4.
PS the ambient sound from the ACS is really good - it sounds just like your normal hearing... but obviously with bionic capabilities. Great for eavesdropping.
..you mean to say that this could be my hearing aid into old age too - excellent!
5. The Yammy is an excellent instrument but also pretty pricey at around £3,000 ...ouch ! Theres the NS Design CR4 which has a great sound - but aesthetically and shape wise not the same as a DB . It has a long neck without D stop bouts. The Yammy is about as close as you will get. But you can also pick up a Stagg for around £200 which does have little aluminium frames to simulate the D stop and a hip support. Folds down pretty compact too and feels quite DB -ish ( I took one on a plane to Greece last summer and put it in the overhead locker!).
6. Excellent many many thanks for the explanation - makes a lot of sense now
7. As I progress gracefully into mid life my hearing certainly isnt as clear and crisp as what it used to be and some gigs are just muddy as hell with sound bouncing all over the place. Not come across the ACS Live but have just looked it up and it looks really very interesting. For ease , heres a link I just googled http://www.acscustom.com/uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=117&Itemid=91 Dumb question - but what do you plug the 3.5mm jack into? As you can tell not my area of expertise !
8. There is a really unpleasant trend that seems to be flourishing in Hungary to make fake antique basses to make them look like 'Treasure Trove' and sell to the European market. I would be really wary about buying anything on e-bay without first seeing in and verifying that its the genuine article. Have a look at this http://www.ebay.co.u...=item3a8d62754c Modern fake or the real thing? ....answer - modern new instrument ! The guy is at least honest that in his description but looking from the photos its easy to think its an antique. There are plenty of sellers who are not so truthful:- Doublebass for sale The Bass is Handmade Bass and is a modern Instrument made looking old style. The Sound is really good also for Jazz. The mensur is 105cm and the bodylenght is 113cm. The Bass is all wood. The bass would be a good choice for musicians with a lower budget. The transfer in Europe would cost 300pound. For further questions please feel free to ask. Heres the Hungarian version of Ebay - always good to cross check and see any Hungarian 'antique' instrument its offered here - one would think a legit seller would be equally happy selling to the domestic marketplace rather than just pitch to the UK ebay market.
9. Could be a simple matter of taking it to a luthier and looking at a sound post adjustment . You can take away brightness , add warmth, brilliance etc by repositioning the post. Have a read of this - hope it helps! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_post
10. Theres one on ebay at the mo - dont see them come up for sale that often http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/King-Double-Bass-Slap-King-Relic-KnK-Cordes-Lambert-Rockabilly-Country-Jazz-/261425332492?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Sting_Instruments&hash=item3cde2a010c
11. I am sure you will WOW! the examiner with your playing ...especially on your new JL !
12. Good luck with your exam too Sam !
13.
....got fed up of always loosing great chamber music gigs
They are clearly not anywhere near as choosey about the quality of playing were I live !!! Lol
14. Excellent! Thanks Clarky for pioneering this. Nice looking , compact and monogrammed too ! How would you rate it compared to other phase shifters and HPF units you have tried?
15. Gotcha - never really thought of scoop like that but makes perfect sense.
16. Thing is that will have given you a firm resolve for your 7 sight reading ! The slurred and tied notes are always the tricky ones for us especially with changing time and key sigs thrown in ....I guess thats why they are there in the exam - grade 6 isnt meant to be easy ( its not ) !!
17. I hate it when that happens ...its really hard to feel good about a performance when you cant evaluate things or even hear that you are playing. I think the answer may be to be more robust with the sound guy. Nobody should have to battle a wall of sound on stage.
18. ...thats not an exam, thats a mini solo concert ! Great job , well done again Phil ! BTW who did you have as your accompanist and how did the sight reading bit go?
19. Did you mention you were playing on Weichs? - just was wondering what you thought in comparison to my Mittels?
20. What pieces did you opt for in the end?
21. Congratulations ! I play spiro mittles and they should settle in pretty quick. It might be you tail piece wire that's bedding in and bear in mind that the bass will adapt in shape and dimension with the loading of the strings and being in a nice heated house rather than a courier depot! So maybe best to give the bass a chance to rest and regain its composure . You may find that the buzzing disappears. +1 and without any doubt take it to a luthier and have it set up properly. Worth every penny! If the strings are too high the chances are that you will get some buzzing on the fingerboard in addition to what are experiencing already. Anyways good luck with it and great to see you've taken the plunge !
22. If a sound guy ever says you are too 'bottom end' in his venue, ...well, you know what to do to sort that one!
23.
Sorry to be a pedant but it's Nick Weldon, not Wheldon! One of the most inspiring teachers I have met!
...I stand corrected Mark ! (I suspect I cant blame it on the spell check can I ? ) I found Nick to be just one of those rare people that you meet for the first time and you feel like youve know him as a close friend for years, the sort of guy that would do anything to help you on your way. Talented musician , kind , patient, charitable with his knowledge ....inspiring guy as you rightly say!
