How varied are you?

Not sure i see the point of all this "pseudo-worship" of how brilliant variety is, and isn't it all so great.

I play fairly limited styles because thats what I like and I don't play stuff I don't like. As I get older, I get even more like this, and I've been gigging for almost 30 years.

You don't wanna do that mate, your string replacement costs will go up by 60%... :D

Thanks for the tip, mate! So I'll have to learn to play fretted notes on those same two string then. Correct? ;)

I started on keys & did a couple of solo gigs in the late 80s playing instrumental stuff like Tangerine Dream & JM Jarre.
Then decided to join a band in the early 90s & played rock covers (GnR, The Cult, Led Zep, etc).
Then went on to do some thrash (Napalm Death, Megadeth, Metallica).
Then in the late 90s, got into computer music & spent a lot of time writing chillout/trance (& even some happy hardcore).
Joined an originals rock band in the mid 00s that ended up doing all sorts of stuff, from rock, punk & blues right through to reggae & jazz.
Me & the singer from that band then made another band to do songs that wouldn't fit in that band. A mix of folk, americana, jazz, blues & experimental.
Spent a few years playing in the church band.
Now trying to form an acid jazz/breakbeat band (maybe with some dubstep thrown in there for good measure).

In a lot of early music scores, instrumentation is not specified - the idea was that you used whatever you had available. So you could argue that bass guitar would be a perfectly reasonable choice for a bass line (check out my soundcloud in the link below for an example of this approach - apologies for shameless plug :) ).

Used to be ..rock covers (I'm a metal head ,)
Wanted to play in electro metal( ministry /front 242 etc ) never happened.
If I were to join a band again, I'd go for tangerine dream meets tool kinda band.
Was in 2 blues bands. Made me feel very old.
On one rehearsal , I decided I had enough of the blues .
We had songs such as' lightning blues , 'blues in my head'.
When the band leader said 'I've got another song- down man blues' , I resigned from the band. 'We are a blues band you know ..,'
Me; 'really ??'

So no , I couldn't do blues anymore . And I hate soul/ funk etc. so I may not be varied enough.

Personally, I don't notice any "pseudo-worship" in this thread at all, even though some in a thread like this just might be tempted to make their own list a long one.
To me it seems that respect for variety does not exclude respect for specialisation.

Also, it's just about choices. Guy I worked for was a Bach specialist who'd look down on everyone who was not as specialised as him. I found that just as silly as looking down on people who do specialise.

In Holland, we had this definition of specialising as "Knowing more and more about less and less until you know everything about nothing".
Like that one a lot.

You misunderstood. Lotsa bass in the Medieval music that I wrote!
(Just you wait. In 1,000 years from now, my writings on BC will have become runes!)

I have done a few styles...here's my musical journey in order...

Grunge (as a guitar player)
Acid Jazz
Indie
Metal
Hip-Hop
Dub Step
Folk
Funk, Soul and Gospel (on current projects)

There are lots of other styles I would like to cover like Latin Jazz, Reggae, Punk and maybe even Metal again, but I am very happy where I am musically at the moment.

Ironically, that's the band I get least out of as a musician.
The musicians have all been playing longer than I have (and I'm in my 33rd year now) and it's tighter than a ducks bottom, but the genre just doesn't really 'do it' for me.

Yep I agree, being tight and experienced isn't always a recipe for success. You've gotta feel it baby. If you ain't feelin then it ain't happenin.

To be honest with you , I think when it comes to playing the bass guitar in most popular music styles , having a decent working knowledge of how to play the instrument will take you a long way towards playing any style . The same rules of harmony apply regardless of style or genre , and then it's a matter applying that knowledge in a thoughtful and considered way and using your taste and judgement . I am not that varied in my approach though , in so much as I won't play with poor musicians or take part in what I consider to be projects that lack credibility

I'm sure that playing a number of styles has been beneficial to me, but wouldn't dream of saying that it's what everyone should do.
If it's any consolation, I only play one instrument, and have no desire to play any others :-)

Thinking about it , lot of the greatest players are so distinctive in their styles that you couldn't really say that were varied . Was Jaco varied ? You hear the same licks time and again in his playing and he fits them in to different musical situations . He only ever played like Jaco . Was James Jamerson varied ? He did one thing , i.e be himself with that signature sound and that approach , and did it very well in any situation . I suppose that if you have a significant style then variety is less important , or even something to be avoided .
