The bass will be officially launched at [url="http://www.facebook.com/nammshow?group_id=0"]The NAMM Show[/url] in Anaheim, CA on January 24 - 27. Cliff's father, Ray Burton, will be on hand at the Aria Guitars booth to do the introduction and sign autographs on Friday, January 25 at 12:00 noon.

That's pretty cool. Glad they haven't just knocked up some random tacky pile of crap with a load of bells and whistles on it that Cliff never would have used.

Looks great... Reckon it will be pretty pricey though. You can pick up original SB Elites for very reasonable prices these days. I had one for a while, it was excellent. Wish I still had it really.

Aria have reintroduced the SB1000 models recently. I reviewed one myself, a SB1000RIB and found it to be a superb instrument, very well built indeed with a super fast neck. The price tag is up in the 'premium instruments' range, but the model we had in to the magazine studio was flawless. I'd expect the CB model to be the same.

Always loved Sb's.Great players,built quality neck etc,puts fenders and the like to shame really!My first serious bass I had on long term loan was a Sb150.Had 700 for ages,always a keeper!

Rumour is Aria was set to commission FujiGen to build these reissues. Did you see anything mentioned in the product literature to confirm this? Or did it go back to Tokai?

Well, the model in the OP's post is the SB-B&G I, which was introduced in '83. It's the 30th anniversary, hence the reissue.

Don't know enough about Burton to comment on which he used most, but he certainly owned and used two examples of the SB-B&G I.

Well...each video or photo I remember about that bass in Cliff's hands makes me answer "yes at all"


By the way, it stinks of commercial move and nothing more, to me...

Well, as I never rated Burton, can't say as I paid a huge amount of attention to him. But, when it comes to the APII basses he used, my mind tells me it was mostly an SB1000, which just happened to be black, and an SB-B&G I.

As for the commercialism comment, I can't say as I'd agree with you. It's only in recent times that the Japanese have started to understand the concept of legacy in modern innovation or design. Previously, there was either the completely up to date or the ancient, with anything from the recent past being immediately dismissed. Now, they've come to accept that in their continual race to do better, along the way, they've created some iconic designs. So, when it comes to recreating those iconic designs in the present, I'd trust the motives of a Japanese company much more than, say, an American one. The SB700, and it's revised versions, the R60 and Elite I, were Aria's most successful SB models, in terms of sales. this is the first time in around 20 years it's been available again. Yea, really feels like Aria are milking it.

Glad to see that it has the correct bridge like the original SB1000. I had a SB1000 in the 80s, seem to remember it was bloody heavy..

Just buy an old model that is closer to the real deal.

i think this is a reissue of the black n gold I, ive got an original i think its an 85 great bass from what i know cliff used an sb1000 but wasnt keen on the active electronics from all accounts
on his last tour he took three black n golds on that tour lars kept the one from the tour bus when he died, one was in a hard rock cafe i think and his family had the other his sb1000 was said to have gone back to aria and was on ebay america a while back, this is all from what i have read on the net but on garage days revisited jason newstead is pictured with an aria sb black n gold on the rear cover and there is a pic of the one in hard rock cafe on the net so that would account for two of them
anyhow great basses and i dread to think what they will charge

Really?!!! That seems very expensive.

On a similar vein ... I heard somewhere that Cliff Burtons original Black and Gold sold at auction for £17,000. Don't know how factual that is.
