It's gone from a few whispers to a rumoured £500m world tour in pretty short order.
Oasis wouldn't get anywhere near close to generating £500 million gross from a reunion tour. The Police reunion tour generate circa $350 million, and in the process became the seventh biggest grossing tour recorded. That was 2007/08, crossing over with Oasis in its heyday, when it played its longest tour, a tour which failed to break the $100 million mark. And taking into account £500 million is $840 million, that would be $100 million higher than the highest grossing tour ever recorded (staged by U2).

  3. Bois de Rose is a rosewood, most commonly from Madagascar, but it's not Madagascan Rosewood (Dalbergia Baronii/Dalbergia Madagascariensis). Bois de Rose is much darker, with more red tones. It's probably a long shot, but there might be someone with firsthand experience of using it as a tone wood or touchboard. That it may closely resemble Brazilian Rosewood was also something that I'd read, which is the wood it will, potentially, be replacing.
  4. For anyone who buys SoS at the newsstand, this month's issue is on offer, at Tesco. Cover price £4.99.

    Ibanez FG100

Yes, first built by FujiGen in '81, the year after the Joe Pass signature model was introduced. Built by FujiGen until '86, and then built for up to three years by Terada. Certainly not a budget model, it was one of just two non signature "Jazz" models in the Ibanez catalogue. Guess I'd imagined that the GB and FA models were more collectable, and that the FG wasn't. Then again, mine is now a 27 year old FujiGen built Ibanez!

    Ibanez FG100
I'd say you could price it from £800 - £1,200 depending on the condition.
Which makes some sense of the $1,500 to $2,500 asking prices in the US. Maybe I'm missing something with this particular model, as I just didn't think these would sell for as much here.

    Ibanez FG100

Have an '85 FG100 in brown sunburst that I'm planning to sell, but, as these don't seem to come up for sale regularly, having trouble researching current value. The FG100 is pretty much the two pickup version of the Joe Pass model, except it has a maple top as opposed to the JP's spruce top. All original, in good overall condition. Don't have a period fitted case.

  13.
i thought andy was already quite a very respected player before joining duran?..a..very talented guy indeed.
He'd already released some material, and had toured extensively throughout Europe. Of all the members, he was the one taking the greatest risk, stepping away from a regular gigging band to throw his lot in with an originals band doing something as different as Duran Duran was doing.
  14.
At the time I really didn't like Duran Duran, it never occurred to me that they actually played their own instruments I just assumed they didn't ... The guitar sound is ace.
Having been in a studio and watched Andy play, always makes me laugh when I hear the "he didn't play the guitar parts on the albums" conspiracy theories. That guy really knows his way around a fretboard. What would "Hungry Like The Wolf" be without his guitar part? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xp47-TVng90 Contrasted to without John's bass part ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAdAPOR8MQc

  17.
so did he ever use the SB-1000 that people seem to think he played all the time...also wouldn't be fair he has been playing Peavey's longer that any other bass brand?
Oh yea, when Aria got around to signing a sponsorship deal with him it was SB900 and SB1000 models he used. The bit in the book was about the first Aria he got, which was one he bought before Duran Duran got signed. As he related the facts: he went into a store, there were two Aria basses, an expensive one (1000) and a cheaper one (700), so he bought the cheaper one.
Guy Pratt, was he on Hey Little Girl? I bought the LP (remember them?) because of that song, only decent track on the it and the only one not written by them I seem to recall?
Everything on the album "Primitive Man" (aka "Love In Motion" (UK)) was played by the lead singer/songwriter, Iva Davies, with the exception of some percussion on a few tracks and an additional bass part on the track, "Mysterious Thing", mostly using a Prophet 5, a Linn Drum, a '62 Strat and a '66 Precision. The track "Hey, Little Girl" was written by Davies, as was every other track on the album. Pratt joined the touring line up to promote "Primitive Man" (usually using an APII SB1000). The first Icehouse release to feature Pratt's bass playing was "Sidewalk" (mostly using a Status Empathy). He also played on the album "Measure For Measure".
  18. Anyone ever used Bois de Rose (Dalbergia Maritima) for a touchboard?

    Itswifty

Had a conversation with Simon, which ended up with me buying one of his basses. Knowledgeable BCer, happy to answer all questions, and maintain good communications throughout. Whole process was stress-free, which is all I ever hope for, and pleasant, which is an added bonus.

  21.
Noel - do you remember if your Artist Jazz had the same logo as that Ebay thing? Really racking my brains to remember where else (and when) I've seen this brand.
Exactly the same - including a black swoosh either side of the logo, which was in the place you'd expect to see a "Fender" logo on a 70s Jazz. Recall seeing copies of big headstock Strats in a few other stores, in both Kilmarnock and Glasgow.
  22.
I'm inclined to think "Artist" might have been a short-lived Korean brand, maybe early/mid 80s and likely not particularly great quality. I did like the look of this (especially that edge-binding) and I was bidding on it really out of curiosity - never seen anything quite like that before and quite likely won't see another.
Certainly more than a passing resemblance between the Artist model on eBay and some Samick output. My first bass was an MIJ Columbus precision. My second was an MIJ Artist jazz. Purchased new from a music store in (I want to say) Troon (but it may have been Ayr) in (I think) '82. (If anyone remembers the music stores on the west coast of the time, it was the one where the bass department was on the first floor, with all the amps.) Lighter than the Columbus, the body was satin finished, in a mocha brown, and the neck was lightly glossed maple, with a maple touchboard and black binding/block inlays. Scratchplate was three ply, B/W/B. It was well made, and had a tight neck/body pocket. The pickups were the weak link - lacking real punch - but better than some of the other MIJ/MIK stuff of the time. Store had it priced at £125, which is what i paid (cash), but got a vinyl carry case and two sets of strings thrown in.
  23.
eBay/PayPal are a monopoly
Not a monopoly per se. However, investigated by the US authorities for anti-trust practices. Also, while registered in the UK, investigated for financial accounting irregularities.
  24.
PayPal are a bank - they're governed by the exact same laws as banks ...
PayPal Europe is registered as a bank in Luxembourg, which allows it to operate its money transfer and merchant payment systems in Europe, but it does not operate as other high street banks do, or even as other online banking organisations do, in the EU. Previous to relocating its business to Luxembourg, PayPal Europe was registered in the UK, not as a bank but as an electronic payment handler. The primary organisation in the US is not registered as a bank, but as a money transfer service. Oddly, in the US, its registrations are on a state footing, which means it's not governed by US federal law. Personally, I found it's revised terms and conditions, circa 2008, to be unfairly weighted, giving it much more extensive withholding and charge-back powers than supportable under normal commercial practices. That's when I deregistered as a merchant account holder.
  25.
Pretty standard set up for me ...
As you say, the standard arrangement, and one that's much like my own. Some might say, if it ain't broke ...
Is this a new style MacPro?
It is. Instead of setting a monthly spend made the decision to pool my instrument and technology budgets, and spend the bulk at the start of the year. Hoping it's not the wrong move, opting in to the new Power Mac before it becomes proven technology.
I see you have Motu BPM - that could be a really good bit of software but Motu and UVI just don't sort out the bugs, it is so frustrating. I used it for a project last year out of interest (since upgrading mac and OS to 10.8). It must have crashed about 40 times during the session, it was unbelievable... How is DP with 64bit/32bit plugins? Latest Logic won't run 32bit plugs anymore but I just found something called '32 Lives' which has solved that it would seem.
My reason for buying BPM was to get access to a library of classic drum machine samples, the likes of the TR808 and 909. There weren't as many libraries of classic drum machines at the time, and although I still use BPM I've picked up other versions of these classics, including FX Expansion's 8 Bit Kit, but find Arturia's Spark Vintage very good, although I've been having most fun using Rhythmic Robot's MR11 http://www.rhythmicrobot.com/page0/page10/page5/index.html and RX5 http://www.rhythmicrobot.com/page0/page10/page65/index.html emulations of Yamaha's MR10 and RX5 - two pieces of hardware I own. IF RR get around to emulating Roland's TR626 and R8 then I could complete my drum machine hardware set! DP8 handles 32-bit plug-ins by switching to a 32-bit mode. Unfortunately that imposes the 4Gb working memory buffer, and DP treats the whole project as if it were 32-bit. That said, the way DP works with plug-ins generally has always felt very efficient. Being able to handle VST and AU plug-ins side by side is also a bit of a bonus.
I switched from my Macbook Pro ... to my home gaming PC for my home studio. Incidentally, in terms of stability and compatibility and general suitableness for audio work I would say there's no difference between a Windows 7 PC or a Mac. ... SSDs are great for reading from but don't really like lots of writing and overwriting. Plus they're expensive for large ones so it makes sense to record to another drive. As I only record one, maybe two tracks at a time through my interface I'm not really hammering write speeds so writing to a mechanical drive isn't slowing anything down. Plus those two drives of mine are fairly nippy anyway. Also reading from one drive and writing to another should in theory be faster than reading and writing from one drive.
My first computer was a used BBC Micro Model A, in the mid 80s. Wasn't until the mid 90s I got my first Mac, a Power Mac 7100AV. Even then the Mac was a revelation - so much more stable than other computers. Since then I've stuck with Mac, as I do think the OS is more stable, and the leanness of coding makes Mac less resource hungry. Take your point at there being much less difference these days. The SSD is where I'm expecting to appreciate most performance difference, although I'm sure the latest version of Intel processor will also impact on things. That brings me to one of the notions I was thinking over - would making the switch to a completely SSD based setup deliver enough of a performance improvement to validate the investment at this time. I have my doubts, which is why I'm minded to stick with the CalDigit AV Drives I currently have, and not migrate to AV Pro with SSD. It might be, as someone else suggested, that the advent of SSD will make the need for having individual drives for DAW, libraries and projects redundant. We're also at the point where the latest versions of SSD are arriving, which should prove more reliable for writing over their lifespan, as well as delivering faster write speeds.
