Basses from smoke free homes.

I am not sure about this, but I seem to remember reading somewhere that electronic items such as amps, mixing desks etc can get their internals clogged up with the sticky nicotine gunk after a while, ie, inside the pots, sliders etc. So, I suppose if your bass was subjected to a lot of smoke, the jack socket and pots could be affected?

Jeez, it's bad enough that my GP tell's me my athletes foot/genital warts/ingrowing toe nail/short sightedness and hairy chest is caused by my smoking, now people are not buying guitars because of it!!!

I've heard it all now!!!!! :P

I must say, I've never smelt tobacco on any guitar, especially mine, the majority of which are 40/50 years old. Personally i never smoke in the house, although i'm sure that wouldn't make any difference.

Access to your detailed and verifiable evidence for this phenomenon would be appreciated.

Prior to the smoking ban, an average of 0.7 public houses closed in the UK every month, following the ban, an average of 3.6 have closed. Google it. I havent, but my landlord was only telling me this at Christmas, and i have no reason to doubt him.

No doubt the anti-smoking brigade will attach lots of scientific data to disprove this.

For what its worth, i fully approve the smoking ban, and every price hike at every budget, despite being a smoker myself, its a horrible habit, that i would go to great lenghts to discourage anyone from starting. Sadly, my willpower is virtually non-existent. :(

Even though I've never smoked and even though my clothes and gear stunk after a gig and even though I still recall looking out from the stage and seeing a cloud of smoke hanging in the air about 2 feet above the punters heads (which can't be healthy - especially if your a non smoker serving behind the bar all day). I still miss the days before the smoking ban. I always end up standing outside in the cold with the smokers somehow.

At least the smoke covered the smell of men and their disgusting Lynx aromas. Pubs and venues smell horrible now.

I remember going into a pub next to Old Trafford a week after the smoking ban came in, (I was going to see Genesis and not Man Utd before anyone has a go - or you might think Genesis is worse), what hit me was the overpowering stench of body odour and stale beer, not sure what's worse, but as cancer has killed almost every smoker in my family then I guess a bit of sweat never hurt anyone long-term.

Any instrument that I buy [i]must[/i] come from a smoke-free, pet-free environment; no high-cholesterol cooking (the stink of chip fat has been known to send me into a swoon).

No red-top newspapers (ink transfer to the fretboard); no porn (partly for similar reasons to the newspaper thing, but principally because of the objectification of women); no magnolia decor (the residual vibes stifle my creativity) and a seller who supports inclusive, progressive social policies.

Now they do these "road worn" basses I suppose smoke-stained basses will sell for more soon.

I still think nothing looks more rock'n'roll than cigarette burn on a guitar neck.

Luckily, the world is still in order - here, both Berlin and Hamburg, people smoke as they please, nobody gives a toss. So I guess we'll be selling smoke-stained guitars to the UK soon (extra option at thomann's second hand section)

My old Ric has aged from white to a yellowy cream... Wonder if its much to do with the places i used to play in? Ive always had nice comments about the way it looks, complete with light fag burn mark in the headstock.

My two penneth on the whole smokin' thang - it should be the landlord / venue's choice if smoking is allowed or not, then its also your choice to play there or not. Being as ive been in both positions (behind the bar booking bands, and on stage with a bass) its plain to the eye that the ban has had an effect on crowd size, particuarly for the rock music i used to troll out regularly. However one should consider a number of other factors such as more expensive booze, the rise of the chain pub, the amount of cash a punter can spend on seeing a local band vs. saving up and seeing a famous one, etc).

I don't smoke, but my Ric's previous owner definitely did. I don't mind it though; it just smells used. I still couldn't buy a car or sofa from a smoker, but I do reckon each of my basses smells unique in a good way.

I probably spend too much time smelling my basses.

I used to play regularly at a place in Matlock Bath during a time period either side of the smoking ban. About a year before, and then about a year afterwards. Within a month of the ban the function room at the pub changed from the good old ciggy smell to a vile mixture of urine, sweat and mouldy curtains and carpets. An egg-head doctor friend of mine told me that cigarette smoke actually has an antiseptic effect and that the mould spores (now rampant) might be more harmful than the smoke! We packed the gig in soon after (not because of the smell!) so I can't confirm that.
We've all got to die of something, so I reckon we just have to make our own informed choices.

[sub]Used to sell [s]second hand [/s] pre owned furniture & TVs. Heres a tip.[/sub]

[sub]Get a spray bottle, sort of thing you buy at the garden centre for 30p. pour in half a cup of cloudy amonia, add a teaspoon of fairy liquid. top it up with tap water.[/sub]

[sub]Spray it on liberally, watch the brown gunge that you didnt realise was there run off for a bit, then wipe it clean and dry. [/sub]
[sub]Nothing, but nothing on the market thats anywhere near as good. Some of the syuff we got in was truly disgusting, but always looked and smelled clean afterwards.[/sub]

Isn't that what most pubs smell of now?
