Just been looking at the Hipshot BT1 and just wondered if anyone had a opinion on them if they are worth the money that the bass centre sell tham at, at £85 or if anybody knows a cheaper place if they are worth my hard earned notes£££

If you have a need to drop tune, then yes they are absolutely brilliant! - Actually, scrub that! When you get one, you'll want to drop tune!

They are brilliant gadgets when set up properly. I had one on a 4 string for several years - until I started playing a 6er instead.

There is the arguement 'oh why don't you just tune down between songs' - yeah, that's fine too.. but I like gadgets :)

I fitted one to my main (4 string) bass when I played in a band that had lots of downtuned songs. Once you get it set up properly then they're great. Easy, fast, accurate tuning down and up again.

They are expensive though, guess it depends on how much you downtune.

I have a BT10, same thing different shape. It's so handy for dropping down. You'll start looking for songs in drop-D like Slither and Killing in the Name and have a whale of a time. I use mine for Summer of '69 too

Totally worth it if you have to alternate between drop tuning and standard a lot.

I have D-tuners on three basses right now. Two of them a BT-1.

Basscentre: I never buy there anymore, out of principle. If they have what you want they may be ok, but they sold me *twice* something they didn't have in stock, without telling me about it. They get your money fast, but then you don't get a straight answer "oh, any day now, don't worry" and you keep waiting. When I finally asked for cancellation and refund they took AGES to refund... and I had to remind them about their ">5week delay? get a £20 voucher" policy because they also "forgot" to offer it to me. TWICE. Never again.

Cheaper? I got my D-tuners from a seller on eBay which is based in the US, but sends quickly and without problems. I think it worked out around £50ish each time.

What he said - and as for the final para, you soon become adept at flicking the switch down & back up with your thumb during numbers - good for confusing people watching what you are doing when you can do it surreptitiously as of course it throws your position/shapes out by the detune

Only trouble it ever gave me was when I got my first 5'er and took it straight to a gig, when of course the position/shape memory I had built up for stuff in the set went out of the window. That was an interesting evening

Oh noes! You posted a Manring vid! I give it half an hour before the first "that's not proper bass/what a load of bollocks/etc" comment that his stuff usually draws.
Personally, I think the guy is a god.
I have had them on all my basses (except for the Kubicki). Wouldn't feel right without one now.

Thought I was getting a bargain ordering one from the USA once, until customs slapped another £25 on top!
I've been lucky, not a single customs charge on ten or so things I've had from the states. It's worth a shot. It will still be cheaper than getting on over here, even with customs charges.

+ 1 for the ebay guy Hipshot BT 1

I got mine from there, real quick (less than 7 days) no customs no hassle & genuine article at great price. In fact I've not had a customs charge or any problem with loads of bits, strings etc. via ebay from Hong Kong, USA or EU.

As said - once you've got one you'll find you use it more & more & they're easy to fit & setup.

I would love one on my '51 P but they don't do the rivet through head so not a match (if you're fussy like me :) )

Cheerz, John
