I finally got around to dampening / bracing my laney cab!!
Lord Sausage replied to Dave Tipping's topic in Amps and Cabs
That all looks incredible, but i know if i tried that it would be an absolute disaster! -
For me Slash always plays the perfect parts for the song he his playing. I love this, underated and shows him at top of his game. http://youtu.be/8D6k3LKeMA0
Never liked Zeppelin much, despite being an ageing rocker, never liked Bonham, hate that slack-arsed sound. Someone once said he sounded like someone falling down the cellar stairs carrying a load of boxes, and I never got that out of my head.
The thing is Bonham's style and sound changed a lot over his career, so at which point are you talking. If you listen at the begining when he was about 19-20. He was all arms, power, bashng and only a little finesse by around the time of Physical Graffiti he had changed his style to playing more with fingers, (trampled underfoot and fool in the rain are good examples) and more control in his playing and probably structure. He was a different drummer by the end the constant being his heavy groove.
It makes absolutely no difference if you are talking one 2x12 v two 1x12; it is still a 4 ohm load and it is simply down to personal preference and for me the modularity of the pair of 1x12s makes that the winner. However if you are talking about one 4 ohm 2x12 v two 8 ohm 2x12 then the latter wins hands down (by a mile) due to the fact that you have twice as many drivers, double the displacement.
Cheers pal.

Quite a number of numbers is murkier the waters again. So for instance. If you had a 500w amp you would recommend going into a 4ohm version of a 600w 2x12 cab rather than two 8 ohm versions of the same cab.
Malmsteen is arrogant .tick. King of arpeggios.tick. Albums poor.tick. However, have seen him at music fair at wembley a few years back.Arrogant etc.very comical without meaning to be. Saw him headline Hammy Apollo a few years ago, when schenker lost the plot and cancelled, leaving malmsteen to headline. Malmsteen rocked,) absolute ly brilliant. Saw himat Astoria 2(the small one) shortly after not long before it got demolished. What some people don't realise, malmsteen has as many imitators as Eddie van halen. By the way m Bonham is the nuts.)
But non of eddies imitators got anywhere close. Eddie had unique personality and fire in his playing and phrasing. That's the main thing people miss about eddie his phrasing!
er..will have to join you, Chris. I can get along with some of his stuff but I wouldn't put him right UP there. Not a fan of super loose sounding unless it is someone like Chambers who is a Monster. If drummers go along with the Bonham thing too literally then it is not a good thing from my point of view. I think he was ahead of the game in a lot of respects and all due credit but give me Ian Piace anyday..
Glad someone said Paicey, I bloody love him. Proper underated or at least not mentioned enough. Saw him live he was incredible and it was so easy for him. Saying that i just love bonzo. That groove....plus no-on plays a straight rock beat as well as he does/did!
Are you thinking of buying more than one 2x12 or more than one 4x10? From your post it sounds like you are thinking either a 4x10 or two 2x12s, IME a good single 2x12 is a direct comparison to a single 4x10 (not much smaller in many cases in cab volume size), two 2x12s is a monster rig not to be confused with a single 4x10!
Just one to start with
The watts just don't matter, you have to increase them by a factor of ten to sound twice as loud. Always buy 8 ohm cabs so that if you need to add a second you can. And the last thing you'd add to a 412 is a 115, a 115 can't even keep up with a 212.

So what do 1x15 give you then is it more low frequencies or is that bollocks! Just to be clear then, a 500w amp that only gives out 350 due to ohms would be plenty loud.

Bollocks. Cone size in and of itself only affects one function, the angle of dispersion, The larger the driver the narrower the angle. All other aspects are determined by the driver specs. Same specs, same results, no matter what the cone size.
This is similar to a post i've just done on another thread, I went into amusic shop with all the extra knowledge garnered off you fine people. I was talking to a saleman. I was looking at an Ashdown 4x10. He said if i buy it to then at a later date pair it with a 1x15 to get the low frequencies. i asked about what the frequency response of the cab was. He didn't know what it was, or meant i think, then went and looked it up on the internet. Thanks basschat!! -
So, armed with the extra knowledge that i've amassed off you fine people, I went to a music shop today. I was having a look at a Ashdown ABM 410 (can't remember the letters after the number. The label said it was 650w, on the back of the cab it said 600W. I started speaking to one of the salesmen. I told him how i couldn't make up my mind between buying some GK 2x12's that i'd seen somewhere else or going down the 4x10 route. He said "well most bass players use 4x10's, not many use 2x12's". He also said i'd get a better sound with 4x10's. I thought there may be a few people who disagree with that!

How about this from one of the masters! It has everything feel, melody, technique structure. Solo starts at 1.50. But again best listening to all of it! http://youtu.be/ZcVEOc7ZYgk

There's just too many but for now i'm going for this. I just love how aggressive and how much fire Eddie Van Halen has. Especially on the first two albums. http://youtu.be/vl0TqgbVRaI At about 2.05, but best listen to it all!

So something like this then, http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_bb410t.htm,(I'm not thinking of buying it!) even tho it seems quite impressive, decent frequency response, 500w, does it mean it will be prob be hiding something? For instance it just saying 102db for Spl won't mean anything and it could perform badly at different points. I mean the price is obviously a giveaway, but that will be more than just build quality, right? -
You are all legends! The advice has been fantastic!
First you have to find them; AFAIK no one reveals them. The official reasons why are 'we don't want to confuse players with information they might not understand (calling you stupid they are) and 'people buy our cabs based on how they sound, not how they chart'. But they don't explain how people are supposed to know how they sound before they buy them if they can't try them first. The real reason for there being no charts is either they don't want you to see them, or they don't have any. Or both.
thanks -
If you're looking for a GK 2x12, you'd be better spending a little extra on the Neo 212-II. Why not a 2x10?
dunno, as you've probably guessed don't know much about this side. I got a 400w marshall head and a Peavey 2x10 and a 1x15 when i was 18, about 15yrs ago and have always used that so never looked into the tech side. Just concentrated on playing. Now its time for new stuff and i know bugger all
The low E on the bass is @ 41hz, the low B on a 5 is @31hz. 52hz is @ Ab. However, the harmonics a note produces are what we often hear & usually an octave up, but trick our mind into thinking it's the root note. The lower hz a cab can produce though = trouser flapping. Edited to say, 52hz sounds like it might be a guitar cab?
i use a 5 string so a 52 hz cab would be no good then. I'm looking at a number of different cabs and just trying to research them. The one at 52hz is a Gallien Krueger 212MBE 8 Ohm.
