For an all round workhorse you can't go far wrong with a G&L (again, biased). If you like to P/J route, Yamaha BB's are getting a lot of love just now, and they are a bargain at around £250 for a BB415

£180 for a bass that looks like a Spector/Warwick in great nick with a bunch of extras. Can't really complain can you?
