1.
Ah... my entire contributon to this thread has been even more nonsense than usual. I thought we were taking about the TH500. Ha ha.
D'oh! It is Monday, we'll forgive you FWIW I have extolled the virtues of Ashdown's RM800 but will gladly admit that compared to an ABM the "old school" tech destroys it for that delightful "heft" The RM as such is back being my backup head for bigger gigs now rather than go-to.
2.
Still a class D though, which is the essential thrust of this thread... And given Ashdowns reluctance to release specs with any useful detail it's hard to make any real comparisons.. Or it's reviewed by someone with access to instrumentation like the guys as BassGear mag online.. Fancy popping the lid off you ABM1000 and taking some photos?
I'm pretty sure the ABM1000 has the standard toroidal transformer and is just class d power amp. The big lumps of iron referred to here are actually the power supply, the transformer in particular, not the power amp. Most class d amps use SMPS power supplies as they are part and parcel of the module and it is often these which let down the bass amp performance.
Nope. Just the Jeff Ament. My T5 is anything BUT an oversized body.
OMG I need one of these in my life
4. I'm on my third ABM head after regretting selling the two previous ones, if that helps clarify
5. I don't think Harkte "aren't trying" with the LH, it has a very specific design goal in mind and IMO meets it perfectly.
6. I think that's a bit unfair on the LH series, it is a stonkingly good simple amp. As with all things there are plenty of people who like and plenty who don't but I don't think it falls into the Kilo or TX category
7. Strings and Things sending me a new one, excellent service
8. I run an ABM 500 through a VS212 cab and can destroy walls. They are fairly bass heavy amps and cabs so you have to be careful with eq and preshapes but they can sound absolutely incredible when set right. I think they'd benefit from a thumpinator or equivalent in front of them to remove some subsonic stuff.
9.
Blimey, food for thought indeed! Seems like a superb cab on that basis! The thing that really interests me (and I'm truly not baiting BF owners intentionally here) is that these equal the Barefaced cabs for volume/loudness/dispersion or however you wish to phrase it. Of course, tone is subjective and others may prefer one over the other for that, but it's very interesting indeed that these equal or perhaps even outperform the Barefaced cabs/drivers in a real world setting, given how they claim they perform compared to similar speaker cabinets. How have Ashdown achieved this?
Careful Kev, you're seriously paraphrasing there. Kevin prefers the Ashdown but nowhere did he say that it equalled or outperformed for volume/loudness/dispersion etc. Also really worth bearing in mind Kevin's modded the cab so the standard RM isn't what's being compared here
10. The ICE module is the same as the one in the RM800. If you watch the last video posted Doug says it's able to be uprated due to increased cooling. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the 20% figure is correct based on the time scale as well
11. Reigate, Surrey. A top chap indeed, sorry to hear of your hand injury
12. I thought it was just my stand which suffered, will see what Hercules say!
13.
I like a good Doug interview. He has so much time for his product users as well as media outlets. Damn nice fellow to chat to face to face too Interesting what he had to say about the Class D power module argument. Also cool that the digital circuitry for the switch can be upgraded in the future without modification to the amp!
Yeah he really comes across brilliantly in that. Nice guy, down to earth but with ideas to grow. Good stuff
14. WTs are a thing of beauty it has to be said
15.
Out of trial, so here comes trouble
Shitballs!
16.
The TH500 pairs nicely with the Barefaced RetroTwo10, providing you don`t want crystal clear hi-fi highs. I have one - paired with the Four10 of the same range - and it`s a nice warm smooth sounding cab, and doesn`t break up much even when a fair amount of gain/drive is thrown at it. Unfortunately for me, I need that gain/drive so I`m switching cabs, but I`d happily recommend the Retro range to anyone wanting a warmer more traditional bass sound. And this doesn`t mean you can`t get highs with them, just not super-modern hi-fi highs.
Are your cabs going back to BF Towers or are they out of the trial period (and hence is it possible for me to get in trouble very soon...?!)
17. I love my Ashdown RM amp, but the ABM definitely has more ... well, you know If only Ashdown would make an ABM in the RM chassis. (Hint hint )
18. Oddly, when I order my One or Two10 I'm going to *demand* (hehehe) the same finish as in the Super Compact, I prefer it for life going in and out of vans
19. It doesn't exist without pictures
20. Is the tweeter switchable in the RM?
21. IMO the woolly thing is exacerbated by the cabs. Not that I am dissing them but if you pair an ABM or RM with a BF Super Compact or two you will be able to make any sound you want really. I don't dislike the cabs but I don't necessarily rate them in the way I love their amps.
22. I have the original RM800 head, and I did a review here: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/268064-ashdown-rm-800/page__view__getnewpost My thoughts haven't changed really. I love it, but I also now have an ABM500 EVO which I also love and would say the ABM has a bigger bottom (ooooh errrr) if that's your thing.
23. Incredible price for one of (if not the) best solid state amps ever (IMO of course!) If I could I'd bite your arm off for this - GLWTS
24. No, the power is split by impedance, not the power handling of the driver.
