1.
Problem is the discussion word is 'sound', not 'tone'. Sound is too ambiguous to actually be answerable.
lol yeah, i actually did that on purpose to make arguments! as i said, i started this thread when i was bored, and just wanted to get a discussion going!
2. i've always thought the solo on maxwell murder is some of the best playing i've heard
3. i see i have a lot of arguing my point to do here
No but thats also a different style as well as a different sound. a precission with a pick can usually be copied by a good player with another bass and a pick

A Precision with a pick sounds like a Precision with a pick. I've heard plenty of non-Musicman basses "cut through the mix" just fine.
lol, yeah. what i was saying is that people say they like the sound of a precision with a pick, and that musicman basses cut through the mix better... BUT if the player/technique is the major contributer to tone (yeah... i know playing with a pick is a technique, it was just an example!) then how can this be so? surely any bass with a pick sounds the same if its the same player playing it, and no bass can cut through much better than other because its the same player playing it?
No because obviously the better the pick ups the easier it is to get a good sound and the better its made the easier it will be to play. Althoughthats not always the case, I have had cheap instruments that were everybit as easy to play as instruments 5 times the cost
yeah, but what i was saying is that if the player is the major contributor to the tone, then surely the equipment doesn't matter? how can you find it easier to get a better sound with better equipment if the player is the more important factor?
Not at all, but if you don't have, at least, a basic understanding of how to use: Parametric and Graphic eq Pre amp and Master volumes Crossovers High/low pass eq etc. Then you stand little or no chance of getting "your tone" on another rig.
i'm not sure whether you were arguing with me there? it sounded like you were, but you've actually completely supported my point. what i meant was that people are saying that the PERSON playing it and the way he/she plays makes most of the sound, so what i was saying was if that's so, if you don't have your perfect sound you'll never get it, cos its always you playing. you've just supported me by saying your not screwed cos you get your sound from parametric and graphic eq, preamp and master volumes etc. ie. the gear, not the player.
4. its fugly
5. when i come around's quite tough for a first song to learn! im guessing you like stuff like green day if you chose that particular song to learn first? i'd say learn some new found glory or zebrahead, both good bass players (although i know at least one person on here disagrees with me about ian grushka of nfg), or some more of greendays older stuff (the new stuffs pretty rubbish IMO) "warning" by greenday is a good one to learn for a beginner cos it teaches you the major scale (the whole song is just going up and down the major scale in A). just play music you like!
6. lol i wasnt expecting this many replies! i only posted cos i was bored and had only a few minutes befoe realised that i don't remember last time i changed the EQ on my amp. so you guys who are saying that the sound comes from the player... are you saying that if you don't like your tone you're screwed? and when people are saying there's nothing like a precision with a pick, its all in their head? or when they say musicman basses cut through the mix better? and you're trying to say its pointless spending a grand on a custom bass when you can pick one up for £50 off ebay and get the same tone? i think not.
7. elastic bands!!!!
8. my taitycaster - it sounds great and is unique, the only one ever handbuilt by me! not to mention it cost £990 to build that (a lot of money for any teenage boy!!!), and the other two - one my dad paid for, one i paid for but its only a squier and im thinking of selling anyway.
9. Obviously it depends on a bit of everything, but what do you think the main contributer to your sound is? Bass? Amp? Technique? Personally I'd say my basses are my main contributors, my Taitycaster and Soundgear sound completely different. I always keep my amp on the main settings and change the settings on my bass, although i do sometimse use my "deep" switch on my amp. What about you?
10. i get the feeling you've done this before looking great! much better than it started, no doubt about it!
11. i think beedster sold an identical one on here ages ago (might even be the same one?) if you're interested you should search it, see what he thought, and who the buyer was and how they got on with it. 'course, i could have just imagined it and im now talking rubish! EDIT: found the link! turns out it was an american jazz, all the pics are gone but i know this was definatly the one! 12.
No one - I'm planning to live forever.
or at least, die trying...
13. if only i had £675 more than i currently have...
14. that link in the first post takes me to a fender acoustic guitar, not an epiphone bass...
15. hmmm... i'd say go squier personally, more unique and squiers these days are supposed to be really well built.
16. theres some cool SX stuff out! http://www.rondomusic.com/sjmb62car.html i want one
17. these were at the london guitar show, the burgundy mist jazzes are cool! i fancied a chrome red precision out of them all though, that was just sooo cool looking!
18.
If you want to learn about vintage Fender basses, then get "The Fender Bass - An Illustrated History" by Al Molinaro. It's the best book around for that topic.
+1, i love that book
19. theres two VMPs. theres the telebass one and the white one. i've only ever heard good things about the VMJ and the squier telebass VMP, i've never played either, so they might be worth a look. the thunderbird is a lovely bass, i was going to get one before i got my ibanez, but i went for the ibanez instead. for that price you wont go wrong with a thunderbird. but, as OTPJ says, they might be hard to get a hardcase for. i'd say play them all first, go with what you like best. i don't know where you're from, but someone might be able to tell you if any music shops near you have any of these basses in.
20. depends which arm i lost...
21. sorry, i probably sound like a noob, but what is ska? the only one of these bands i listen to is rancid... and i'd class them more as a punk band? im guessing ska's similar to punk?
22. +1 to starting another band as well.
23. its an ibanez. on bass player magazines site, this page, go right to the bottom. under gear it says Fender SRB 6, Aria AVB-SB 6, Ibanez custom SDGR 6, all recorded through a Radial J48 Active DI into Tube-Tech MP1a or Avalon VT-737SP mic preamps, into Pro Tools HD2 (at 24-bit/96kHz).
24. honestly, an ATK is pretty much the same as a stingray for roughly half the price. i'd seriously reccomend trying one before you buy a stingray - you never know, you might even prefer it to the stingray.
