My Dad found this horror at a Car Boot Sale this morning - - It came in a job lot with a couple of guitars he figured I could use for projects. Don't know (and don't intend to find out) if it works. Was gonna fleabay it tonite 'as is' but if you, or anyone else, reckon it's of any use then let me know and I'm sure we can come to an arrangement. I'm particularly liking the 2-tone effect... It looks like they took the trouble to mask it off, then spray it with aerosol..! I haven't had a chance to lift the scratchplate yet, but the pots still seem to be in there. Dreading what else I might find though KotS
where's the control cavity on that? is it a clear pickguard (that's what it looks like) or one just a bit deeper colour than the body?
  2. dunno if anyone else or i've already said this i've only read to page 6, but who's the guy who plays for rancid? he's great. also ben osmundson of zebrahead, and ian gushka of new found glory can both be quite good. i never hear anyone mention any of these guys, i think they deserve a little more recognition than they get.
  3.
I think most people would agree that black P basses should either have a black or tortoiseshell scratchplate.
nah! coolest looking pickguard for a black p bass is chrome, like mine!
  4. i think the chrome would look great, lighten it up a bit. black would look fairly good, too, but that'll make it a bit too dark looking IMO
  5.
Got mine for £429 from Sound Control Leeds. Cheap as chips.
where do you buy your chips?

  7. psychocandy, is your's full scale? i really like it, and i dont tend to like SG shapes. i wish i did like them, id buy an SG bass in red straight away, in my band both guitarists play red SGs.
  8.
No. The MM4 is a 6-string guitar.
o yeah. my bad lol.

    Block Inlays
+1 with blocks ..but pearl on rosewood, and maybe maple, but I really don't like black blocks. Personal taste issue, in case black block lovers are insulted.
i think colour wise it depends on the pickguard, unless its a rosewood fretboard, black would just look stupid on rosewood, you wouldn't be able to see it. but on a maple board if you've got a white or pearl pickguard, then pearl blocks look good. anything else you HAVE to have black IMO. i especially hate pearl blocks with a black pickguard, it just doesn't seem to match!!!
  12. squier p bass special neck with a black headstock. this comes from a black and chrome squier p bass and has a jazz nut width. not sure what this is worth, so PM me with offers. includes chrome machine heads (the photo shows one as a gold machine head, that's just the light! they're all chrome)
  13. no there isn't any difference. i own the black and chrome, but i put seymour duncan quarter pounders in and a mexican precision bass neck on. its a great bass. i was liking the look of the satin pewter metallic until i saw it in the flesh, IMO its not great looking.
  14. The Fender Bass, an Illustrated History says: "The jazz Bass Plus four-string was developed and released in the summer of 1990, months after the Jazz Bass Plus Five. George Blanda and Seiki Goto combined efforts in the R&D department to give the new models unique characteristics. The headstock shape was reduced and the decals redesigned. The back-routed access for the electronics introduced a new challenge for the Corona facility. The complez electronics evolved from R&D and Custom Shop's short-lived Kubiki bass experience of 1989 and 1990. Versatility was the key to the Lace sensor/active package. Volume/pan was the first control. Active treble/bass boost and cut was provided on the next stacked concentric potentiometer. The last control was a rotary switch that provided active/passive selection with an ajustable mid-boost or cut." It also says that it has a downsized body shape which "adressed the needs of a contemporary marketplace driven by heavey metal look and sound. The instruments lacked the traditional Fender pickguard and paired the new Lace sensor pickups with a versatile active circuit." I hope I've not just breached any copywright laws lol.

    New Band

back in black, AC/DC. goes down well in my band. also sweet child of mine. classics.
  16. i like the logo being subtle, it just looks good to me. its not TOO subtle, but it doesnt stick out. IMO i think the pic above looks great.
  17. i've not got or played one, but i saw a cool looking fretless guitar (not bass) at the london guitar show with a maple fretboard last year. the only fretless guitar ive ever seen.
  18. doesn't my taitycaster count as a single cut then? that kind of a guitar body...
  19. i got the SR500 like mike, and an ashdown amp (EDIT: just realised, also like mike lol). my tone's easy to get. bass all the way up on the amp, bass all the way up on the bass. mid stays on flat on both amp and bass. treble boosted by about half on bass, same on amp. then i have my deep switch pressed in on the amp. i have it favouring my front pickup slightly. thats when im playing with a pick. with my fingers i only boost the bass by about half on the bass rather than all the way up and then make the bass favour the back pickup slightly. other than that all settings stay the same. love the one in your avatar, by the way, faithless. im guessing thats the one your asking about.
Mmmm, Mockingbird: http://www.bcrich.com/bass_heritage_classic_mock.asp#
thats sooo nice. i always loved mockingbird guitars till i played one.
  21.
I'm 14 and have been playing 2 or 3 years so I'm not really a beginner, but I'm a teenager. My main bass is an Ibanez Soundgear 500 and I also play a Squier/Fender jazz that I'm doing up. My Soundgear's just a soundgear but my Jazz is cool. I bought it off Neepheid with bartolinis and a preamp not long ago, and I'm making changes. All I've changed atm is add a Fender Precision neck, BADASS II and chrome knobs and I'm thinking pearl scratchplate.
well, since this thread's still going, i might as well do an update from my post on page 3 of thread. I sold my jazz, but kept the neck and BADASS, they were too good to sell. here are my current basses: this is my squier black and chrome precision, that i put the fender neck i had on my jazz on, and then put seymour duncan quarter pounders in, but the quarter pounders weren't in when i took the picture. the pretty jazz in the background is my dad's (simon1964) jazz. this is my soundgear. this picture was taken quite a while ago. its not looking too good nowadays. the paint's been scratched off by my thumbs above both pickups, and up by the neck under the D and G strings the paint's been chipped off again from playing slap. finally I have my "taitycaster". if you go on the link you can see pictures of the finished bass, and a build diary of my five day shuker course as i hand built this bass. its by far my favourite bass in the house, including my dad's 7.
  22. dunno if anyone else has already said this but there should be one for both, because for a year or so i taught myself, but since then ive had a bass teacher (bearing in mind ive only played three years so not had a bass teacher long). i learnt all the basics by myself, my bass teacher's just helping me improve. so i've not voted, because i don't know which one to vote for.
  23. my old bass teacher had one. TBH £300 sounds about right, i don't know how much they normally cost, but for what its worth, its not a bargain and i wouldn't pay much more, either. its a pretty average bass, there are better out there if im honest, but there are much worse out there, too. you'd be safe going for one, if you fancied getting one. for what its worth, you might find one cheaper, i dont know.

    New SX model.
The pickguard shape sucks though.
You think so? I prefer it to the jaguar one that's got four pieces, but it would be even better like a jazzmaster with all one peice, IMO. i still like it, though.
