the way your all talking, it sounds as though its a real bass. is it? it looks computer animated to me?
I didn't try it, but it's in the music inn on alfreton road. I'm guessing that's the shop you meant because i remember them having a grey les paul style bass.
nah thats not the one. i meant a les paul guitar, actually. i meant mainstage in mansfield, its only recently opened so if you've not been yiou should check it out. they could do with some customers lol. its quite near to music scene, even closer to the town mill pub if you know that?

ahhh of course, how could i forget the fender VI?! nice bass by the way.

Do you get basses with whammy bars? and if not why? I know people like hipshot and warmoth do tremolo bridges for bass, but I never see stock basses with them. Don't they sound very good or something? And has anyone on here got a bass with a whammy bar? Can i see some pics please? I just cant imagine a bass with a tremolo at all?
Anybody heard of spear guitars? I saw one of their basses in a music shop today and was VERY tempted to try it, not sure why i didn't actually. It was one of these, £400: anybody know if they're any good? They certainly look pretty interesting.
a shop near where i live (and near where you live, actually, if i remember rightly) have just started stocking a lot of spear stuff. what i've played seems really good (a les paul copy with a wierd top that had squiggles carved into it has the nicest neck i've played in a long time) but i've only tried guitars. if you were going to buy they'd get one in for you, but i doubt they'd get one in just for you to try out. they do a lot of stuff on order. where did you try it, anyway?

ive only quikly skimmed through this thread, but i just wanna say that 13 isnt too young to be in a band! i started one in year seven, near the start of year seven, too, so i'd have been 11 when i started my first band. admittedly, we did no gigs, we rehersed in our bedroom and never actually had a singer, but it was still a laugh. also i saw guitar pro mentioned - its good for learning songs because you can slow down the bass part and hear exactly how it should be played, but i dont think its worth getting as a beginner tbh.
Here's the same pup in an Ibanez parts catalogue: http://www.ibanez.ru/info/catalog/1976-10/12.jpg - this shows it on a T-bird copy but it was fitted on Ps, Js, Rickenfakers (which is why I have one) and numerous others from various manufacturers.
actually, i'd say the pups are more like on that les paul bass copy.
No harm in askin' imo. If he's a bit of a bass geek he'd probably be interested to know it's being discussed on a bass forum - and he might well want to know what it is himself. I've never seen a JapCrap J with pups like those, I must admit - I thought it might be ones more like this: These are quite small, about the size of a mini-humbucker on a g*it*r, but were quite common on older Jap J's & P's as well as other basses. Despite the two rows of pole pieces they're not actually humbuckers. Never seen a 70s Jap J with big 'buckers - but that doesn't mean they didn't make them! J.
they seemed bigger than that, but im not 100% so ill have a lok tommorow. he's not a bass geek, hes not very good, hes much more of a drummer. i think he just fancied doing one up. how are they not humbuckers if they have two rows of pole pieces? have they only got 1 coil or something?
Good idea - only the ones with enough musical knowledge to know that H is B will get up to play...
how is H B? (i get the feeling that your not joking cos i used to have a bass teacher from hungary and i recall him saying something about them not using sharps or something in hungary and using H instead)

hmmmm... probably couldnt get photos. as i said, im on work experience and its my "boss's" bass, so i can hardly ask him if i can photograph it to post it on the internet cos i've been talking about it. i'll photoshop a picture of what i mean though, ill try to get it as close as possible. and yes, the pickup is like the one on gibson EB3s and EB0s. and i was thinking old japcrap, too. EDIT: ok, ive dont the photoshop (not very well). if it was put together it would look something like this. except the pickguard has a funny design painted on (not sure if thats original or not)

does anybody know what this body might be? its a sunburst jazz body with two humbuckers like the ones on tele basses (or the squier vintage modified tele bass). I'm on work experience at a music shop and the drum teacher there (who also plays bass) found it for really cheap and was planning on doing a project. im not too bothered, just a little interested as ive never seen one like this before. anyone know what it is? it came with a jazz neck (rosewood fretboard with block inlays. i think it had binding, too, but im not 100% sure) that had a fender shaped headstock but no brand. it also had a pickguard that was normal jazz shaped but made to fit the pickups, and electronics that didnt work.
Gold you say??? Would gold work??? problem with that is id have to change the bridge and knobs for gold ones and I just got them lol.
you wouldnt have to change the hardware. if you look at the fenders with gold pickguards (mexican active p bass and 59 reissue i think) they all have chrome hardware, i think that looks great. i'd say it'd look better than with gold hardware, but thats just my opinion and imagination.
Looks great man, and I wouldn't grouse too much about the pickguard - personally I think white suits most dark colours. It's sharp and it's smart, like a dark suit and a white shirt
I think it looks OK how it is, with the white. I agree that black'd look better, but i wouldn't fret too much.

is that a replacement pickguard on the thunderbird? i thought they had a little logo on them? forgot to say, i adore white non export aerodynes! they're just soo cool, with the black binding... mmm...
-
is that a tort or black pickguard on your precision? the photo looks black, the sig says tort...
I don't know why but I think it does make a difference.
+1. i don't have a clue why i prefer them - to me it doesnt make a difference to the tone, the you dont even touch the fretboard (its probably just a mental thing lol) - but i prefer rosewood fretboards. so much so that ive only ever owned one bass with a maple fretboard (an OLP 5 string), and i only bought that because it was all black with a matching black headstock.
The jazz deluxe looks a like the body has been squashed in the vertical slightly. I really like it. Is this a trick of the eye/camera/monitor or can I buy a jazz that looks like this?
isn't it just one of these? they all have downsized bodies like that. i love that thunderbird by the way - thunderbirds are THE coolest looking basses out there.
-
is that a fender bass VI lying down at the bottom? i cant see very clearly. and what colour is it - shell pink? or is it a faded fiesta red? or even just the pickture that makes it look pink rather than red?
-

i think they're great. definatly try one out if your not sure - you'll be blown away. definatly try one out anyway, the necks are very different to things like fenders (you know the standard stuff), you might not like it.
I concur: That is a Korean Jazz which I used to own.
is that be the jazz bass i bought off you? i sold it a while ago, i cant remember who to...
I would frame the pg and hang it on the wall rather than keep it on the bass. or am I missing the point?
+1

How important is an 'interesting' bass part in the music you play?
Tait replied to Cantdosleepy's topic in General Discussion
it depends how much i hate the song and how fun the bassline is. i dont really like listening to stuff like red hot chilis and rage against the machine but i learn the basslines cos they're fun, and i like listening to stuff like blink 182 and i learn the basslines cos i like the song. but id never learn jazz - walking basslines bore me and i hate the music!!!! -
hit me with your rhythm stick the bass solo in maxwell murder (by rancid) any double thumbing, i just cant do it.
I want to try owning a 5 string but don't want to spend a fortune
i'd say its the perfect bass for that
If they did these with neck pickups too i'd be interested .
they used to, when they first came out. i think theres also the koa topped version in (i think) japan with the neck pickup, but i think in only four strings.
-
personally id go for the VMJ (if you dont mind the neck lol, i hate jazz necks). i've never heard one or played one, but from what ive heard they're great. i used to own a 5 string OLP, they're decent, but they're just cryuing out to have an active preamp put in them. i wasnt too impressed with the SUB, either. its not much better than the OLP, and nowhere near as good as a stingray. they're decent enough... theres nothing bad about them, but nothing great either.
