It's what we're here for! I know there's a lot of people like me, who follow a lot of build threads, but don't necessarily post in them. Doesn't mean we're not interested!
+1, i love reading build threads... never got anything to say though.
dont think iv ever heard positive comments about the studio, iv heard alot more positives about the epiphone version...
i'm guessing the reason for this is because the epi's so much cheaper than the gibson. the epi's £200 and the gibsons over a grand. from what i've heard the gibson is hardly worth the extra money.
Or get a Warwick BBC?
lol

would any of you use a tutor who doesn't even own a bass?
Tait replied to Inca's topic in General Discussion
i know this is an old thread, but a few weeks ago i got a new bass teacher. i'm not sure if he actually owns a bass, but he's never once brought it to a lesson, and he's by far the best bass teacher i've had yet. for the first ocuple of weeks he taught me about theory - not just the basics but he really went into detail. i learnt loads of mew stuff i didn't know before. now he brings in a guitar and a laptop with loads of recording software and we mess around on that, i've learnt loads about the "feel" of the music, and imporvising, and just listening to music and creating your own bass line. so yeah... you can complain about a bass teacher who doesn't own a bass, but mine's working out for me. EDIT: by the way, Inca, did you ever get a new teacher? -

cant we get a thread like this stickied? they seem to be coming up more and more often. anyway... ibanez SR500. go for it now. brilliant bass. actually, just go for any ibanez. they're all good. except the GAX thingy, that seems a little bit cheap and horrible to me. most important bit of advice - PLAY BEFORE YOU BUY. i tried loads of cheap basses when i was starting out, squier, yamaha, etc. but i sold them all after a couple of months. i tried the ibanez and it was amazing... i've had it a few years now. EDIT: there is one stickied... have you read it? it seems pretty good advice to me. gives you a chance to choose what you want, too, rather than loads of people just spurting out their favourites (for example me, going on about the ibanez as if its god - which it is)

this sort of thing is where the idea for my thread a while back about "what makes most of your sound" ok... wood makes a difference. but nothing you can't fix with your amp or electronics. it seems silly to me to worry about woods and stuff when the amp or effects or, according to the thread i mentioned earlier, your fingers make a much bigger tonal difference.
Write the keys next to the song names on everyone's copy of the set list.
this wouldn't work for me... my guitarist said to me the other day, after we had changed the key of one of our songs from B to A "so are we playing it at 5 now?" i was like "at 5?" "yeah... you know... 5" "oh... you mean the 5th fret?". worryingly he's just finished GCSE music.
When other band members ask you to turn down on stage, a slight attenuation of the bass knob frequencies will often fool him into thinking you have
or... turn down when they ask you to, it's only in order to get the levels right. you're a bassist, you're not suuposed to be the centre of attention. good idea for rehersals though
Hi - I bought a new Hardpuncher just like yours for £300 last week. Great neck, and full, mellow sound. I was struggling a bit with my right hand positioning, so I put on a thumrest. Looking at your photos, I'm completely confused, because I've installed my thumbrest on the other side of (ie above ) the strings! Try as I might, I'm struggling to see why yours appears to be underneath the strings. I've probably missed something completely obvious here, but please will you help me to be less confused!? Steve
basically fender originally thought people would prefer playing with their thumbs plucking the strings so it there to rest your fingers on. then people played with their fingers so fender moved it into a position where you can rest your thumb and use your fingers.
This is the colour I'm going to buy.
i think this colour would look brilliant with a rosewood fretboard, but i really dont like it with the maple... to me it just doesn't work. i'd say natural ftw, but its really common in natural and i know you like your bright coloured basses lol (look at your signature for proof!)
the ibanez sr500 seems to be getting a lot of praise and GAK are doing a good deal on it, so it also looks like a good way to go. i tried one the other day and it felt great, very light and playable, but i could only hear it through headphones so it was hard to decipher the tonality, how would you rate the tone of the SR500?
the tone's the best bit!!! as my dad (simon1964) said, you get barts and a three band EQ, and a bloody good three band EQ at that. if it felt good i'd go for it, the bass covers everything you could want, but i'd agree with whoever said that if you do want a specific precision or jazz tone go for a MIM precision or jazz, they'd cover that better than the ibanez.
Love his playing with the Clash and attitude on-stage but that band in the photos - The Good Band & The Queen are truly terrible. I had the misfortune to see them doing a showcase gig a year or two ago and it was painful. I've had more fun at the dentist.
+1, the clash were amazing, the good the bad and the queen are awful. i suppose they're completely different though, the clash fans arent going to like the good the bad and the queen.

i've once done a gig with what i suppose could be 17 bands in one night... but it wasnt really bands, it was more different guitarist and drummers, cos i go to this place where they teach drums, bass and guitar lessons and every year they do a gig where you get stuck with some guys you don't know and play a song but theres only three bassist so i got stuck doing 17 songs. good luck with your gig!
Personally I like this white one, which only seems to be available in Japan The other one's rather nice too !!!
have you seen the black and chrome one, like the white one? they're both great looking, and i KNOW you can get the black iat GAK, i'm not sure about the white.

does an electric upright bass (i guess thats what EUB stands for?) sound more like an elecrtic bass or an upright? jw cos do they have elecrtic bass pickups, and they'd have to go through an amp etc.
I thought Ibanez really cracked down on people duplicating the monkey grip...
i doubt they'd be bothered about this. actually, they could be happy about it, really. if you think about it, people will see the monkey grip and like it, and go to ibanez since they're the only make that do them. if it was a cheap copy, though, people would go for the cheap copy and ibanez would lose out, thats' why they don't like companies copying it.
Hi I need a bit of advice. The original plan, was to have an all in one pup cover/ramp/thumb rest running from the bridge to the neck. Having played a few basses with ramps, I'm thinking slapping may be compromised? Is this the case, or will it just mean an adjustment of technique? Otherwise it will mean having to reshape the pup cover/ramp/thumb rest by the neck, which may destroy the aesthetic
i dunno about the ramp, but in the last set of pics theres a pencil outline of a precision pickup. if thats gonna be that close to the neck its gonna be kind of hard to slap anyway. of course, you might be able to do it, all i'm saying is that it;d be a bit close for my liking, i know that i'd keep catching my fingers on the pup.

Where would you say MOST of your sound comes from?
hmm, black might look good, try getting a load of similar pictures of the same bass in different colours and with different pickguards, (like the photos on musicians friend, they're all the same size and roughly the same angle) and shop a black/white guard onto a red body and see how it looks. I've done it before to see how my SUB would look with a maple neck Also if i were you i'd try and find an SR5 pickup, might take a while but won't cost you much when one does come up, it will make it sound so much better.
sounds like a good idea, but rather than just searching on the ernie ball ste you can use the build a bass section, and change the pickguard colours. EDIT: just been on the ernie ball site, it looks as though the build a bass bits gone. i liked that it was good fun.
