you know, flying V guitars are one of the coolest designs around. flying V basses just look wrong. same applys to semi acoustics, too. on the other hand the gibson firebird is nowhere near as cool as the thunderbird.
Chief, buy it. It's an excellent deal - you'll have to shell out at least another £50 for a bag or a case. Mysteriously no-one selling them cheap seems to have them in stock. As my old boss used to say - you can have anything we haven't got half price.
ah missed this post. everything that deaver's said confirms what i said in my last post. EDIT: in regards to a PM i recieved i thought i'd just add that this is bolt on neck, not neck thru.
Not trying to hi-jack the thread or anything, but can't you buy these things new for £170 or am I getting confused?
when you try ordering one from GAK or thomann youll have a couple of months wait cos they're having problems with epiphone cos of rosetti closing down (i know thomann say 2-5 days but they didnt even have it in stock after nearly 2 weeks, never mind dispatched, and GAK said a couple of months so im guesiing the same time for thomann). also, gak doesnt give you a case. as i said, thunderbirds dont fit in normal cases, so they have to have handmade hardcases made by epiphone that the shop who sold it to me said costs £50 new (cant confirm this - if anyone can that'd be great!). the case isnt in perfect shape, but it all works and its all asthetics that are damaged (few small "dings" in the leather), i can get pics up if you want.

yeah, ive only heard good things about cort, and my cort gu*tar is excellent quality.

anything in drop D can be done on a five string, just for the sake of it i once saw in an official sum 41 tab book fat lip transcribed as on 5 string tab, when its clearly just played in drop D cos the bass player (as far as i know) only ever plays four strings, and the tab only uses the 3rd and 5th frets on the B string

a long shot but perhaps you can remember who the seller was and email him or something? even if you do still have a record of the sellers username/email adress, its even less likely he can remember what strings he had on what (unless he uses the same strings on all his basses like i do). could be worth a go though?
I have a 5 string, it's a nice looking and playing bass but i don't use it all that much. Saying that i love playing dream theater on it, i couldn't do that if i strung a 4 string BEAD.
thats a good point, you havent got the G string on a BEAD. but on a lot of songs with a low B its rare you're gonna go up high anyway. and you've said yourself when you play an octave higher it sounds as good, why not an play octave lower? so do you need the five string?
Played a gig last Thursday. In the second half as the vocalist announces the next song, Audioslave's Cochise, I suddenly remember it requires the low B of my five string and I'm currently wearing the P-bass copy that I bought from Silverfoxnik. I utter an expletive, our vocalist turns to me, "What's wrong?" he asks. "Wrong bass", I reply. He utters an unsympathetic laugh and turns away leaving me resigned to making the best of an unfortunate situation. The moment arrives, I take a deep breath and play the line an octave higher.....world's still turning, no booing or throwing of rotten eggs and actually it sounded pretty good. I only need the five for two songs in the set (both Audioslave numbers). I much prefer the sound and the feel of the P-bass so now I'm thinking do I really need to take the five to gigs any longer? Anyone else had this eureka moment?
you've just said yourself you don't NEED it, but that doesn't mean you can't use it anyway. also, if you prefer the feel of the P you could try selling the five string and getting a similar P and stringing it BEAD, but do you really think it's worth it? after all, its your money and your bass.

Pics: yes, it is as red as in the pics. theres a very slight burst, but its more of a cherry burst than the sunburst on most thunderbirds. i bought it second hand and don't have a clue how old it is, so perhaps its an older version or something? does anyone know?

hey, I'm selling my epiphone thunderbird IV in sunburst. i can get pics up if you want them, but its a fairly bog standard thunderbird. theres a pretty big ding in the body, but its on the side so not really noticeable from the front. selling cos GAS has got the better of me. i've got rid of the neck dive, so that has also left a small hole where the strap button previously was, which i have blacked out so its barely noticable. You can always move the strap button back if you want. im asking £160 + postage for it *PRICE DROP - £145* cheers, Luke.
soooo, where you gonna put the third pup? ooooh, you could go all Bootsy and have 'em just CRAMMED in there!
a jazz pup would fit between them no problem!!! maybe even a p pup? that'd be interesting... -
yeah that highway one is pretty cool! and i always thought that maple neck loked weird on the red precision, but it looks sooo much cooler with the rosewood! good call changing necks! any reason to swap bridges, or do you just prefer the highway one or something so given it the better bridge?
-
am i the only one who doesn't like the way the single coil pickups on music man basses look? they'd look so much better with the double pole pieces, like on a jazz bass.
-
oooh how cool would they be in shoreline gold?

Musicman SUB bass project - 2012 update, actual progress!!

oooh this looks good! which seymour duncan you gone for, the ceramic or the alnico? my taitycasters got the ceramic with the seymour duncan 2 band tone circuit, and it sounds bloody good. oh, and definatly stick to the black tuners, since you've got a black control plate, black headstock and black pearl (or abalone? cant really see) pickguard. needs a black bridge though (if you can get them?) EDIT: oh, and it SHOULD pick up just the same with the strings not aligned with the pole pieces as if they were, i think. -
surf greens cool, but lake placid blues even cooler, with a mint green, white or pearl pickguard. and matching headstock for LPB, not matching for surf green. or CARs pretty cool, too. that'd have to have a matching headstock. i would say salmon pink for a jazz, but i don't like it on a precision too much, but thought i'd throw it in cos its a cool colour and just cos i dont like it on a p doesn't mean you wont. or for a more normal (or boring, whatever you want to call it) colour, black looks good with a matching headstock.
-
i had the black and chrome, which is the special but... errr... black and chrome. twas a good bass, made even better after i put a set of duncan quarter pounders in it (not that there was anything wrong with the standard pickups). if you're thinking of getting one don't be put off by the fact its a squier, we have a MIM precision and its as good as (or better even) than the mexican. not quite on par with the japanese fenders though.

i've only ever ordered one thing from them, an epiphone thunderbird, that was advertised at available at 2-5 days notice, but after over a week they emailed me telling me they owuldnt get it in for a couple of months. i was annoyed, because i was told they could get it in in 2-5 days notice, but at least they gave a reason (the reason being there isn't a UK distributor anymore - i later found out that rosetti had been the UK distributor but it closed down i think?), and they were ok with me cancelling my order. sorry- off topic but does anyone know if they'll have sorted this problem with epiphone out? gak had the same problem, and i'm planning on ordering an epiphone from them pretty soon. just wanna know if i'll have a problem?

another easy way to learn the positions is to learn patterns, learn the open strings and learn the first four frets on every string. that way you can work down octaves and fifths and stuff to find the note you're after. a basic theorey is enough, it annoys me when people say you should be able to name a note anywhere on a fretboard as soon as you point to it - why? what does it matter if it takes a couple of seconds to work out the notes? even for jazz playing you learn the shapes not the notes, if i was playing Amaj7 i'd know the what to play, know the 7th etc. without actually knowing the notes when im playing them. i mean i don't think "if im in Amaj7 the 7th is an Ab, and in the A major scale is an A, a B etc." when i play, i know the shapes. rant over.
Nice pics Zak. Didn't realise your fretless had the flea bridge. No photos of the birdseye neck?
flea bridge? i thought flea used a BADASS on his modulus and a standard musicman bridge on his stingrays.
That sparkle ray is awesome
+1, I want one.

I'm a lefty playing righty!!!
It's true though, we're geniuses, that's why we decided to learn to do it the opposite way to what we're comfortable to, just to prove we can (and we realised that 95% of manufactured basses are righties).
Wierd you should say that... I'm more comfortable playing righty. And on my brothers drums I'm more comfotable playing righty. And I can't imagine how wierd it'd be to play left handed piano. And on that i bat right handed in cricket (not very well mind). And I'm right footed. Perhaps I'm a righty who writes left handed?
yeah it was 700 quid brand new... the one in the shop was brand new...
£700 for a squier!!! that's ridiculous!!! i'm guessing its the P5 with the jazz pups (i don't know of any other P5)? they're much cheaper than that new! by the way, those ibanezes sound great, i've got an ibanez SR500 with the same pups and electronics in, and its one of the best (beaten only by the warwick thumb IMO) sounding basses me and my dad own. i don't like five strings so i havent played a five string version, but you should definatly try it out if you get the chance. i agree with OldGit about buying used, as well though, if you're not sure about it.
