The Epiphones are nice basses, but I was also thinking of a review I saw in BGM of the Fret King Blue Label Esprit. That's not exactly a T-Bird, but it is styled similarly & received a favourable review. http://www.fret-king.com/esprit4ta_spec.html
shame its fugly though.
If the tone is the thing, why not have a look at basses with mahogany bodies, a la Gibson. Ibanez do a few in the SR, SRX and BTB series. The official web-site has its own selection, while Nevada Music appears to import other models. SR500, SR530, SRX690DX and SRX 690DX , BTB200 (35" scale), and the JTKB200 (basic electronics). Some models also show the frequency response of the town controls. Happy surfing. Balcro.
having owned both an SR and an epiphone, and played a few different ibanezes i can say they are nothing like a thunderbird, even if they do have soapbars and a mahogany body. IMO the ibanez SR is much, much better than the epi, no competition about it, but its not a thunderbird at all.

i'd love that stingray, shame i can't even nearly afford it. -
course, you can sometimes buy them used on ebay

its not difficult, just boring. you line put the badass on, and string it up. move the strings so they're straight, mark either side of them with a pen/pencil or whatever, take th badass off and use a circular file. it takes ages. thats how my dad did mine, anyway.

A 1-2-1 with Jon Shuker 5 String Jazz type Build
There are not that many people who can say "I hand-made my bass": I'd say it was 95-7% me with 3-5% of JS showing me the first step or rescuing my mistakes!
i found that, too, jon got the balance just right between doing it all and just leaving you to do it yourself. he was always there to help, but tried to do as little as possible so as much of it was built by you as possible. i know there's at least one other basschatter who's done this course (he did the five person one) because i spoke to him about it before i decided to go on the course and he had pretty much the same comments. -
It puts (a lot) less strain on the nut and provides a constant break angle which we all know provides less string intonation/ tuning / breakdown problems.... Thats why so many designers go to quiite a bit of trouble to get the strings lined up without infringing someone elses headstock shape and hence patent..... Stringing like that method above is asking (no begging) to break a nut..... Be my guest try it......
I'll take your word for it
But they are not out of phase with each other?
haha i dont know what that means tbh. its not quiet or anything, just not a very powerful sound - i just find it thin and not a great sound.

this looks absolutely great! these five day courses are great, aren't they? how much did the finished price come to for you, if you don't mind me asking? mine was £990, but mine was only four string, with a natural finish, plain ash, 2 band EQ etc. -
Obviously does not believe in the benefits of a straight run over the nut.
What ARE the benifits of a straight run over the nut? i thought we just did it that way cos it looks better.

heres my P/MM: its great sounding, but not with the pickups together. i see why they don't normally put them together, they really don't mix well! it just sounds weak and weedy! they sound absolutely great seperatly, but i chose these cos i love P pickups with a pick and MM pickups with fingers, so i was never planning on blending them.

the most i'd pay for a bass is £500. obviously that'd change if i became a famous bassist or something, where playing bass is my life, but as a hobby i wouldn't spend any more than £500. i paid £990 for the shuker course, but thats different, cos it includes the course as stuff as well. £500 for an off the shelf or custom bass.
I can practice silently with my bass unplugged or using the tascam headphone/mp3 thing I can't see what the problem is that these basses are supposed to solve. Any ideas?
it shouldnt be silent if you're playing unplugged, you should be able to hear but quitely. these are actually silent unplugged (so i've heard). i quite like the way these look, they're a bit different.

the neck on it looks horrible to me! it looks cheap, and uncomfortable! i dont know what it is... but i get the feeling i wouldn't like it.
