1. Thanks all for the pointers, I'll take a look at all the links and get those books on order too and start going through everything this weekend. Should keep me busy.
Never mind all that, anyone who has Richard for an avatar is cool as feck before a bass guitar is even picked up!! For Pony!! geekmode *off*
You all saw it! That orphanage attached me!
2. I'm still a newbie at Bass (after being a refugee from the guitar) and currently my lessons consist of using songs to learn techniques rhythm and timing. That's all going great but I feel I need to augment that with something theory based. What I am looking for more specifically is to understand music theory as it relates to playing the bass, how to play off the drummer, what makes a good bassline (and more importantly why) & how to write music in general. Additionally I play a 5 and basically everything I play only requires a four so anything I learn I want to be easily transferable to a 5 (or a 6). Sorry if I missed something obvious on these forums or else where but my GoogleFu failed me.
3. Thanks everyone for the kind words, it's definitely a great starting point. They had some of the other Dingwall basses in all of which looked fantastic, but so far out of my price range....for now!
4. So after being a Guitar player for many years I've decided to take bass more seriously. So on Saturday I braved the torrential downpour to venture down to Bass Direct in Warwick. I had a great couple of hours trying out basses and talking about the music business and playing in general with Mark and one other customer. On a side note I thoroughly recommend a trip to Bass Direct if you need anything bass related. I went in with the idea of getting a Spector Rebop 5, I tried a few others including a Warwick Corvette Pro 5, an MTD of some description & finally a Dingwall Combustion. After a fierce battle the Dingwall won out over the MTD by a small margin and I took her home, a gorgeous 5er in Trans White on an Ash body. 5. Absolutely gorgeous basses all of them. I've always loved Music Mans (hence why my first bass was an OLP Stingray) and would love to have a collection like yours at some point. Although I am tempted by the bongo, but no music stores in the area seem to even stock Music Man instruments. Anyway dude enjoy your basses!
6. That's a lovely bass. I always loved vintage Fenders but I'm not quite sure why? But anyway, thats a lovely Jazz and I hope you're enjoying it!
7. Thanks for all the replies so far guys they have been great. The link stevie provided seems pretty good, just need some spare time to give it a look over. And yes Doctor you hit it on the head, thats exactly hat i mena! It looks like I have a lot of work to do... ...well no time like the present to start!
8. I've been thinking a lot recently about expanding my knowledge, and it seems that being able to read bass clef (and treble clef to an extent) is important so I thought I would start there! Now I have a fundamental knowledge of where all the notes are on the staves themselves but I realised I'm not too sure how to transfer this to bass. What I mean is if I'm reading an E on my sheet music, how do I know which E this is on my bass? I have looked on the net for the answers (including doing a search here) and can't really find what I'm looking for. Can anyone recommend any good websites or books that would help me out with this?
9.
Yeah....that guy is pretty awesome. I'm from the US so I can't really tell, please excuse my ignorance, but is he from Scotland or Ireland? Sorry, I don't hear Scottish or Irish accents a lot.
He's from Belfast, Ireland. And yes he is great and has helped me out a lot playing wise.
10. I think I've seen the advert for it 2 or 3 years running so it is more than likely an annual thing they do. Infact I may find myself on this next year it sounds great fun and would be very handy indeed.
11. Hmmmm it's certainly an interesting idea. I have Marshall JCM900 100watt half stack in my bedroom but have yet to test it out on my bass...... If it sounds any good I may just keep it instead of selling it like I was planning to. Hopefully I'll get chance to see how it sounds this weekend and I'll report back.
12. Just taken a look at that Bass and wow that is very nice. I've just registered for an account on the Dean forum with the intention of putting my name down for one. As long as it does run at the expected £400-£500 I think my bank account won't suffer too much as well.
13. Also doesn't Sheehan himself use Rotosound Swing Bass strings?
14. Just checked out the song on your MySpace and I have to say it is recorder beautifully in my opinion! I'd even go as far as saying its better than some 'professional' recordings I've heard! Everything seems well defined and sits exactly right in the mix which I think can be a difficult thing to achieve at times. I don't think you need to doubt yourself Lateralus as you have done yourself and your band very proud I think
15.
you can get car sprays for halfords that are a similar colour to lake placid blue, and ice blue mettalic, well, lots of metallic blues (or at least in the halfords near me). i was looking and imagining the other day when i was in there. and i know car sprays are the same as what they use for guitar finishes (or at least - i know you get a good end result when using car sprays, so im guessing thats what they use)
Aha yes I can't seem to find LPB for sale on the net anywhere, so Halfords is indeed a great idea! Infact I won't be far from one at all tomorrow so I'll take a look to see if I can get a close or even exact match. I definitely think LPB with matching headstock would look great on this one with a white pickguard.
