1. probably a stupid question with an obvious answer... but why not glue the neck to the soundboard, so then you can just cut the shape of the neck out of the quality street tin and the neck is right at the very edge of the tin, being supported by the soundboard rather than the tin... if that makes any sense? (i know what i mean... its just difficult to explain) anyway, its looking really good at the moment! this is a really interesting thread
  2.
best bass I have ever played and it is a f*cking Ibanez WTF?
this is something that annoys me. ibanezes are SO underrated, i'd go for an ibanez over a fender, gibson, lakland etc. any day. they're much cheaper for a better quality - £350 worth of ibanez will buy you a fast neck, lightwieght bass with three band EQ and bartolini pickups new. £350 of fender will buy you a bog standard mexican precision or jazz new. and people still choose to buy fenders! AGHHHH!!!! (by the way, i've got nothing against fenders... they're just completely over rated)
  3.
Ibanez Soundgear range - 500 smackers should get you pretty much what you want, and the SR705 is probably THE best bass I have ever tried in that bracket in terms of return on investment. Versatile tone, VERY playable, and good looking to boot.
+1 Ibanezes are great basses, definatly try one out before you buy anything out. Although, reading what you said about tone, i think you'd do better with an ATK. The ATK has a more stingray/precision neck on it, and sounds like a musicman, whereas the SR500 has a much faster neck on it, an sounds deeper and smoother. My dad owns an ATK and i own an SR500 - they're both brilliant basses, but it really depends what music you plasy to which I'd reccomend you get. EDIT: forgot to mention, i played a REALLY nice passive ibanez ICB iceman the other day, might be worth looking at.
  4. it could look really good or really bad with an abalone scratchplate...

    G&L SB-2
Tonight I played my SB-2 and Asat one after another, both on the neck pickups and the Asat in passive/series. the SB2 wasnt any quieter or lacking in body
any pics of the ASAT?
  6. dammit! i just spent £200 on an epi thunderbird! this is cool! what sort of sound does it make? what basses would you compare it to? just interested cos i don't think i've seen that sort of pickup before. im guessing its a humbucker? anyway, a status for £200! i'm suprised this hasn't already gone! good luck with the sale.
  7. ooooh... if only i had £700 more lol...
  8. with an amp... till my dad tells me to turn it down! he's a member, but i'm not going to say who he is cos everyone knows that parents who make you turn down are uncool!
  9. im kinda the same. i listen to pop/punk music, but as i get better at bass i find that i'm lerning completely different stuff. the difference is that i learn this stuff cos the stuff i listen to is boring, whereas you just listen to it.
  10. i always wanted a yellow precision!!! it looks great, and the checks will look good on it too, i cant wait to see it finished!
  11.
Thanks for the responses, all of them were really helpful. Its good that so many of you are willing to help a new bass player with some of the most basic questions.
lol basic questions are the only ones i know how to answer!

    OLP

having owned an OLP and my dad owned a stingray, i can say that stingrays are in a completely different league to the OLP. the OLPs are passive and feel cheaper, but they are £800 cheaper new so its no suprise. yeah, the OLP will give you a feel of what a stingray's like, but they're nowhere near as good as a real stingray. if you want a stingray sound for cheaper i'd say best thing to go for is an ibanez ATK (my dad owns one of these, too), they don't look the same but they sound very much like a stingray. the neck's closer to a precision than a stingray, and they're heavy. but i think the ATK is easily on par with the musicman. at least try one out before you buy.
  13. i don't like it. wierd body shape, dunno what that black thing between the pickup is there for but i dont like it and there are too many knobs
  14.
So - straw poll - red dice knobs or not ?????? pink furry strap or not?????? and last , and obviously least Seymour QP or not ?????????
no NO!!! yes
  15. i've played bass for a few years now, the ibanez SR500 was one on my first and its about the only one i've owned for over a year. its a brilliant bass, if you've got the money for it i'd say definatly go for it, they're outstanding basses for the price. as to getting a better one for the price - i doubt it. even if you did find a better one for the price you wouldn't need it, and it wouldn't be as good for a beginner cos the ibanez has got a really thin neck and is really light. defo go for it.
  16. leo fender invented the bass. he never put coloured headstocks on his guitars (well he did some), so i guess he just decided not to put them on his basses. people just followed his lead i guess.
  17.
to iwtait; No...
lol! by the way, thats twice you've called me iwtait... its an L...
  18.
Dare I say it looks more striking to my eyes with the black guard. But that doesn't matter a toss , you have it how you want it. Fine looking bass , is it lightweight. I played a really light red one at the Yorks Bass Bash last Sun and now some fried brain cell tells me all red ones must be light!! Whatever - cracking 'Ray , mate
that really light red one isn't jobiebass's is it? cos he's got a really light red stingray lol (i think!)!
  19. whats a plek fret job?
  20. tbh i dont think theres anything special about glen matlock... he was ok i suppose...
  21.
But i think we can all agree that Matt Freeman is the best bassist in Punk.
+1 (excluding me, obviously )
Jean-Jacques Burnel isn't too shoddy.
+1, and paul simonon is great. matt freeman's better though.
  22.
lwtwait, during listening to warning over and over again, I got my dads acoustic guitar from the loft and messed around with it until I found something that sounded like warning, please tell me what I need to change (sorry I can't write music and even if I could I couldn't post it) G|---------------------0-0--------------| D|------------0-0-2-4----4-2-0-0-----| A|---0-0-2-4----------------------4-2-| E|---------------------------------------| etc and then I noticed that it was basically the same as picture book by the kinks and walkie talkie man by steriogram
yeah that's pretty much right, just the last note is wrong- G|---------------------0-0--------------| D|------------0-0-2-4----4-2-0-0-----| A|---0-0-2-4----------------------4-0-| E|---------------------------------------| etc. i always learnt its better to play songs with mostly open notes on the fifth fret of the string above, so here you'd play - G|-------------------------------------------| D|----------------------5-5-----------------| A|------------5-5-7-9------7-9-5-5--------| E|---5-5-7-9--------------------------9-5--| etc this is for 2 reasons: 1) in a band situation you can change key easily so it's easier for you're singer to sing 2) here you're using the major scale. if you learn it like this you're learning the SHAPE of the major scale so can use it at any point in on the neck.
  23. ok, i've had a couple of PMs that have reminded me to add a couple of other things. firstly, i can post it, so its £200 + postage, and secondly, if you're offering trades, four strings only please.
  24.
a switch for "play" with the pickups and to obtain from JAZZ BASS sound to PRECISION BASS sound.
err... what?
  25. hey, up for sale is a precision with squier body, seymour duncan quarter pounders in both neck and bridge positions, mexican fender precision neck and BADASS II bridge. its a great sounding bass in good condition, a few tiny dings around the edges that are bearly noticable and a few scratches on the back where my belt's scratched it. controls are volume/volume/tone. looking for £200 or trades, i can do trades + cash (as in me paying you more) but not much cash cos i don't have much lol. for trades i'd only want something a bit different. NO FENDERS or fender copies, except if someone wants to trade a jaguar shaped bass, they're a cool shape i like active basses, with a bright, punchy sound, but PM me with whatever, i might take a liking to anything...
