1. Thanks for the review. I'm considering buying one of these (currently ~£50). Good job I searched on here.
2. Interesting video review of it here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TufGHRyEr2Y
3. This looks really nice and, initially, had my Buy-New-Bass senses tingling. But how different is it to Squier's P-bass Special? (a bass that I'm not a big fan of). Looks like kinda the same hardware in a bit different shaped body.
4. Fancying a change, I bought a set of Swing Bass 66 strings and can't really say I'm that impressed by them. They just don't seem to have much life in them. Probably go back to Ernie Ball's after they die.
5. Have still yet to find a stockist of scratchplates that fit Squier VM Jazz.
6. Was looking for more info on these and found only this thread. What do people think these will play like? Link They do look rather nice, but I'm assuming it might be built poorly.
7. A simple effect pedal which takes my playing and outputs that of John Entwistle.
8. I was told the quality of the the OLP basses depended on age. The early ones were fine, then the production quality dropped halfway through, then got way better before the OLP brand was dropped. Musicman did say they were going to re-try the idea once they found a new company to make them that could gaurantee consistancy. Personally I had one of the maple MM2 basses and never had problems with it (kinda regretted selling it too).
9. (A slight threadjack, sorry) I bought a scratchplate for my Squier VMJ and two problems were - wouldn't fit without reshaping and screw-holes completely in the wrong place. Does anyone know where to get a one that might fit? The reshaping is fixable, but the screwhole problem isn't quite.
10. Big Muff arrived today. Had a quick play around and it sounds really good. Thanks.
11. 24 hours later and I have a new bass! I opted for a VM Jazz. Got a got price in my local, having had a play around with some others.
12.
As the resident Weezerholic on the boards, I shall assist! I've had Precisions, Jazzes, PJ's and now a Gibson G-3. Of all, the jazz nails matt sharp tone. I keep all controls on full, or maybe roll back on the bridge pup a little. Most of Matt's tone came from his ornage matamp head (quite dirty sounding) and (on Pinkerton) he used a green sovtek muff, for things like tired of sex.
Might as well just opt for a VM Jazz then. Cheers for the input.
As it happens, I'm contemplating a Jazz body with a warmoth neck like Matts. Yeh...I'm sad
I too was comtemplating it, but a bit unsure and indecisive...
I'll also say that if you're using your 'boss overdive' pedal, you won't get that muff sound. I've had (then sold, then rebought) an original green sovtek muff, but I've also used a bass big muff and this cops the tone pretty well. As it happens, I'm selling mine right now (hint!), but it's good for tired of sex/el scorcho/getchoo type mayhem!
PM'ed you regarding the Sovtek.
13.
doesnt the weezer guy use a telebass? EDIT: just realised weezer have had 3 bass players, so maybe matt sharp didnt use a telebass, it could be another one of their bass players that uses a telebass
Matt Sharp's look like Telebass', but aren't: Their second player, Mikey Welsh, used Gibson Grabber/Ripper. The current player, Scott Shriner, uses 60s Precisions.
14. I am now bass-less, having sold my old and somewhat unsatisfying Squier PJ. I'm looking to get a new bass, something that emulates that Weezer bass sound from their Blue album and Pinkerton. I know Matt Sharp used a gutted Fender Jazz body, modified with a Warmouth neck and custom pickups. (This is isn't route I want to go at the moment!) I've read from various sources that the following, used with a fuzz pedal, might tend toward a similar sound: - Epiphone EB-0 - Thunderbird (although I'm concerned by their weight) - Stingray (Sharp used one towards the end of his time in the band, but a Musicman is out of my price range and the OLP range seem to have dried up) - A Jazz bass - Squier VM Tele bass Any input you guys have on what those would sound like, and if they'd get someone near to what I'm after, would be greatly appreciated. Obviously I'll be making some music shop visits to try some, but not being too knowledgeable I'd like to go prepared! Thanks.
15. I wonder how much of a placebo effect the badge has.... ...could 9/10 bass players pass the Pepsi....Fender Challenge?
