Oh dear, I feel the same. Recently I bought an Elite Precision but frankly, as a weekend warrior, I don't feel worthy to be playing it in public. One thing I'm not.....is Elite.

I'm not sure what it is, possibly an early Big Baby without the tweeter? Much cheapness though. Only £250 smackers. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Barefaced-Bass-Cab/113060005018?hash=item1a52e6c49a:g:OVEAAOSwrU1bIUAJ

If the venue is SO dodgy*, that I feel I may need use my bass as a weapon, I take the Squier. * i.e. it's in Dundee

Did your band improve AFTER a player left?
gjones replied to Arrowsmith's topic in General Discussion
The guitarist in my country band was ousted, due to being a bit of a git (and having atrocious BO). The replacement is not as good a guitarist as the guy he replaced but a much nicer person. Harmony has replaced discord and the band is in a happy place. -
I played for 10 years with a blues band with a very 'sensitive' drummer. He was very aware of how dynamics can improve a song and it taught me a lot about light and shade. But many other bands I've played with don't understand what it can add to a song. My main band's present drummer, is a great drummer but has no idea of dynamics. When I ask him to play quiet, in particular sections within a song, I can see that it is difficult for him (usually he just stops hitting the snare).

I have a GK MB500, which I use with a Gen 1 Barefaced Compact. I also own an Ashdown MiBass 500. The GK MB500 is much, much louder than the Ashdown head, through the same cab. Which goes to show that some 500 watt amps are quieter than others, and the lack of decibels may be more to do with your Markbass head's lack of ooomf, than the Barefaced Super Compact's limitations. Last week I took delivery of a new Super Compact. I look forward to seeing how loud it will be, compared to my old Compact, with the GK MB500 through it. I need it to compete with an enthusiastic drummer and a guitarist with a Marshall stack.

The Precision is whatever the opposite of Donald Trump is.

Understated is probably the quality you're thinking of. No bells and whistles. Nothing flash.

If you moan about having to learn 11 songs for the audition, then that tells them that you probably don't have the time or inclination to learn the other 30 or so songs in their set. If you really want to join the band, it's best to just learn the songs and appear keen and professional (you can take notes - I'm sure they wouldn't have a problem with that).

I don't have 'stupidly' expensive gear. It's professional grade stuff, I suppose. I've just bought a Fender Elite Precision and I know at some stage it's going to get it's first dent but I'm resigned to that. Occasionally my band will do mini tours, where we will have to stay a few nights in hotels. I usually take my Squier for those gigs, as otherwise I'd get paranoid about somebody nicking my bass from the room.

I think you're all C*NTS!!!

I own 3 Jazzes (2 of them active), a P bass (with flats), an active P/J and a Stingray. So I don't have a specific bass tone that I always go for. Which bass I take to which gig, depends on the genre of the music I'll be playing that night. If it's country I'd take the P bass. If it's rockier stuff the Stingray, if it's a bluesy gig, maybe the P/J. But as someone has already mentioned, a lot of the time you are at the mercy of the room acoustics. As long as the sound is deep and punchy, I'm happy.

How many watts is your Laney? The Laney Richter 2x10, that's on their website, is 300 watts and has an extension cab output in the back. This means that if you connected another cab to your combo, you'd get significantly more volume out of your amp. That may be all you need. You could get a decent cab for £300/£400.

A Roland SH101, I believe.

Africa - like you've never heard it before?

I think he'd had enough. He just wanted it to end. He was hoping he'd get sacked if he did a shocking bass solo. It's the equivalent of musical Hari Kiri. -
The drummer in the band I was in hated me. He tried to get me sacked from the band and ended up getting himself sacked......halfway through a gig, no less.

Worst bass you've ever played that you did not own.

A Musicman Sterling, with a painted neck and an action like a bow and arrow. I didn't like the looks, the playability, or the sound of it. The basic tone of it was very middy, which sounded horrible on it's own but, if I'm honest, actually fitted into the mix quite well once the band started up. -
I have played in bands where the singer will either have the lyrics on a stand, or a tablet. But they are professional musicians so can sing 100s of songs. They can't be expected to be word perfect on every song.

Bruce Springsteen would have a hard time doing that

Anything by Depeche Mode.

If people want a cheap alternative to the expensive house/rental prices of Edinburgh, they usually pick Fife. The towns, on the Fife shore of the Firth of Forth, are all within commuting distance of Edinburgh. You would then have access to gigs/teaching opportunities within Fife, as well as Edinburgh.

I'm very pleased with the Fender Rumble 100 V3 I bought, secondhand, for £165. I bought it for the quieter gigs I play and it keeps up with a sensible drummer no problem. I thought about buying a One 10 but now I have the Fender Rumble there's no point. I've got a friend who uses the 500 watt version and it's great as well.

I remember, when my band played a festival last year, the sound engineer put one of these in front of the guitarist's 10 watt valve amp. Overkill or what?
