My First bass was one of these. I still have the neck, pickups and hardwear but the body has disappeared into the mists of time.

Looks a lot like one of these. https://reverb.com/uk/item/37774412-burns-baldwin-baby-bison-bass-guitar-c-1965-sunburst-original-vintage-uk?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=12200508927&utm_content=campaignid=12200508927_adgroupid=115920727614_productpartitionid=1258648438448=merchantid=445804591_productid=37774412_keyword=_device=c_adposition=_matchtype=_creative=495081226236&gclid=Cj0KCQjw0K-HBhDDARIsAFJ6UGhgVvSxKuYk8I4MG4EEHmI-jlugoAAVKqhZLBOHcqbNYID-KBMjGGgaAgeVEALw_wcB

I bought a Precision Elite a couple of years ago. It was a really nice bass and very well put together but I just didn't bond with it. I changed strings to a standard gauge set of Rotosound Swing bass, from the original Fender strings, and I still wasn't sure about it. But then I put a set of Elixir 45/65/80/100 and the bass came to life. The strings sounded better and the lighter gauge allowed me to play more fluidly. This is not the first time a change of strings has brought a bass to life for me. Sometimes that's all it takes, to change a dud to a player..

You should count up how much you could get for the parts, if you sold them separately, then put it up for sale at that price. If nobody buys it, you can disassemble it and sell the parts.

Vintage Vinteras 60s Jazz neck bushes and tuners

I've had this problem before. I had to file the holes in the headstock to make them larger. -
I bought a 5 string G&L L2500 tribute, a couple of years ago, and am still amazed how versatile it is. You want honky Jazz tones you've got them, big fat P bass on steroids sounds, you've got them. The B string is really tight and defined as well. I don't know anything about Yamahas unfortunately.

If you got paid £10,000 to play the Dog & Duck, I'd definitely want to see that gig.
-
You get paid what you think you're worth. If you don't ask for any payment, you're probably pretty awful.

The video reminded me of the worst gig I ever did, which was a last minute dep for a wedding (I don't do weddings) where none of the musicians in the band had ever met before. We had to play for 3 hours, as the bride and groom hadn't booked a DJ, we soon ran out of songs we all knew. I realised that if I didn't know a song, there was no point guessing the chords and messing it up, so I just turned my volume down and mimed along to the music, with a cheesy grin on my face. After a while I realised the guitarist and the keyboard player were doing the same........ 🤣🤣🤣 After a nightmare of a gig, at the end of the night the bride and groom came up and thanked us for contributing to a wonderful night ????? They hadn't noticed we hadn't a clue what we were doing. I felt guilty taking their money.

Playing behind the beat is a skill you and any drummer you play with need to master. This a VERY extreme groove but is a great example of this style of playing.

I've bought a couple of basses from BD. Dispatched in no time and received in a couple of days. It's a great resource for the bass player who is looking for something a bit less less 'run of the mill'.

Markbass Mini CMD121P or Fender Rumble 500 - help!
gjones replied to Duroc17's topic in Amps and Cabs
Well I gigged with the Markbass today, at a filming session in a theatre in Edinburgh, for the Jazz & Blues Festival. It was certainly powerful enough to compete with a loudish drummer. The sound tech actually used a mic on it and didn't bother with a DI. I had it at about 11 O'clock on the master and I played my P bass. The bass and low mid were at about 1 O'clock. So a pretty successful first outing. -
Yes, I was at that U2 gig too.

I suppose it makes it unique. If it ever gets nicked, it would be easy to spot.

I bought my Fender Precision elite, new, from Guitar Guitar. The fretboard is ebony (there was a ban on rosewood for a while) and it has swirly pinkish grain through it. I thought about sending it back, because it bugged me (I expected ebony to be black all the way up the fretboard) but when I took it out to play with my band, people said they liked it. I suppose it's different strokes for different folks.

I dislike fake encores. The last gig I was at, where there was a fake encore, was at a Garbage gig In Edinburgh, about 3 years ago. It was the first gig of the tour and there were a few hiccups. After the last song ended and the band left the stage, the crowd clapped unenthusiastically for an encore. Their heart just wasn't in it, andJust as the applause dwindled away to nothing (which didn't take long) and the audience were about to go home for a cup of tea and a digestive, Garbage dragged themselves back onstage. Neither the band nor the audience really wanted to be there and it all seemed a bit of a chore for both parties. If you're a band, always leave them wanting more and never outstay your welcome.

Markbass Mini CMD121P or Fender Rumble 500 - help!
gjones replied to Duroc17's topic in Amps and Cabs
I just bought a Markbass CMD 121P. I've got a gig this weekend and I'll be taking it with me. I've got an amp stand which will tip the speaker up towards my ears to help clarity. I've used one before, that was supplied at a gig, and really liked the sound. We'll see how the gig goes and then I'll report back. -
Most blatant, unashamed rip off bands

Primal Scream are huge Rolling Stones fans. Riot City Blues is the best Rolling Stones album ever in my opinion. -
Oooooooooooh! 😫

No but my friends have a band called the Moaning Bones

I tend to think that the Fender Custom Shop is aimed at 'Blues Lawyers', who are more interested in the look of an instrument, than it's sound or playability. I have an American FSR 75 reissue Jazz, which I bought secondhand, that would have cost the original owner about £2.5k. After spending all that money they obviously weren't very impressed when they got it home, because the first thing they did was whack a set of Lindy Fralins into it and a John East J-retro pre amp (which, frankly, would make the cheapest Squier sound pretty good). I ended up buying it for about the same price as a new Fender Professional (with £350 worth of pickups and pre amp included).

I had one of those moments at the start of a song we'd played a million times. My mind went completely blank and I ended up just playing root notes. I was afraid I was having a 'senior moment' but it's never happened since, so I'm pretty sure it's not early onset alzheimer's . Ummmm, sorry what was the question......???

Some VERY good news at last - live music back by the Spring?
gjones replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
First gig I've had, since March 2020, was supposed to be on today but got cancelled when the sound engineer got a positive test result (everybody had to be tested on the day of the gig), which means the whole tech crew has now to self isolate. Rescheduled for 20/6/21.........watch this space. -
I used to occasionally play with a young drummer, who would dep for our usual drummer, when he couldn't make it. A couple of years ago he travelled over to Nashville, to try and make it as a session player. When he came back to Scotland, for a brief visit, he played a few gigs with us. Although his timing was excellent, he insisted on using a click track, as a lot of the gigs he was doing in Nashville incorporated backing tracks and sequencers and he needed the practice.
