1. Just seen one of these in my local shop - a lot of bass for £400! http://www.cortguitars.com/au/product/b4-20th
2. Met him a couple of times through work (we put out a couple of live CDs and DVDs). Absolute gentleman, and yes, treated his musicians brilliantly. Had a meeting with him in the Park Lane Hilton prior to him playing the RAH, and he insisted on the whole band staying in the same hotel as him. Also went to the end of tour party in Zwickau and had an absolute riot with the horn players, with Last making sure everyone got very drunk! The other little thing he did that amazed me was that he allowed fans in to the soundcheck, and once the band was up and playing he'd leave them to it and come off stage to chat with them. What a pro!
3.
Winner, Bill. Claim your prize.
which is six months in the Tower of London
4.
Nope. Just listened to it again and (in my opinion) it's absolute pants. Not a single redeeming feature.... and deserves an entry into the 'crap lyrics' thread for the bit about needing a small vacation - but it sure looks like rain - and if it snows the line down south will never stand the strain. Turgid.
No redeeming feature? String arrangement (Morse code motif at the turnaround, and the sweeping lines at the end are both glorious. The songwriting, ok, you didn't like a line, but the scanning of "but I need you more than want you, & I want you for all time" is, IMO, near to songwriting perfection. But, of course, each to their own :-)
5. Interesting choices. Thanks for posting.
6. I have played a Dean 12 string, very easy to play, and quite a nice tone, with the upper octave pairs. Much as I thought I should hate it I didn't!
7.
Just queued up versions by Freddie King (3), Sam Cooke, Bobby Bland & Jimmy Witherspoon (2) & they all just cycle through the verse structure. Similar tunes that **do** have a bridge are 'Need Your Love So Bad' and 'Jumping at Shadows'
Just my imagination getting the better of me! We rehearsed it last night and put some extra chord changes in under the guitar solos, worked really nicely.
8.
There are so many versions of this around that is difficult to pick any of them as the definitive one. We've played it a few times, but not for a while. We tend to change things around in most songs we play, so added guitar and harp solos. Good song, must remind the band to play it again.
Yes, from Bessie Smith to Freddie King! Driving me nuts though as I can hear it going up to the IV for a bridge or middle 8 but can't find a version that does that. Oh well, in the best tradition of the song, perhaps we should put one in!
9. Anyone do this old Blues song? If so, is there a middle 8, or, after the intro does it just keep repeating? It's odd, I can hear one in my head but can't find a version with it in! Thanks, Mike
10. Loved this when she appeared on Later a couple of years back, but the original has a terrific Bob Babbit bass line: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-Nc4MW4yr0 Here's the bass-less, but still very tasty Jools Holland Later version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHulRYtCdY8
11.
What are you doing playing all the way up there anyway?
This - even your bass is telling you!
12. Didn't JPJ use one of these ob the Thong Remains the Same?
13. Sorry to hear that. No words of wisdom from me I'm afraid, but plenty of sympathy!
14.
He is great in Muse... depends what he could play outside of that band. Many many bass players ( and other players, come to that ) that find their perfect niche in a successful band may be pretty one dimensional outside it. Maybe they wont care as they have more money than they could ever spend but their skill may not transfer at all... just sayin'
But there are a lot of players where we will never know how good they are outside of their chosen niche as we don't get to hear them. I was really lucky to hear Gary Moore sound check. Didn't like his usual style but the version of Moon River he played, complete with beautiful chord inversions was stunning. Who knows what CW does outside of Muse, I'd like to hazard a guess that he is a more rounded player than you give him credit for.
15. I never understand why people use the phrase "if you're looking at this you will already know about it". It smacks of either laziness or their own limited knowledge. Sorry, rant over, as you were!
16. Could try Mr Foxen who I think has gone from BC but can be found here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ampstack/351966881575839?pnref=lhc
17. As someone who had a shop for two years I'd just like to say spend a fortnight the other side of the counter before you judge too harshly - us bass players are a difficult bunch to sell to
18.
Why don't you email GK? There maybe a mod a tech could do.
You would have thought so, but I just had a quick look on-line at the manual and it is very specific about there being different units for the different voltages. So looks like a no go.
19. We'll be playing outdoors on Marine Drive, Brighton closing the show for the Brighton Bikers' Night - approx 8:30 to 9:30 (the evening runs form 7:00). Come along for some soulful blues with Lee Ainley's Blues Storm! https://www.facebook.com/brightonbikersnights
20. Only fairly recently come across this and love it because of the following: Performance is pretty amazing, technically, the quality for its time is just stunning, the ridiculous choice of setting and her arrival on horse drawn carriage, then I discovered it happened two days after I was born so I feel a strange affinity to it. Sister Rosetta Tharpe live in Manchester, May 7th 1964: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9W4DIBKtvBs
21. Fender Rumble V3 - I use a pair, one with horn on lower setting, one with horn off and I am very happy with them very, very good price too!
22. Don't know if it is technically the right thing to do, but I started by playing at the 5th fret, getting comfortable playing in e and working from there.
23. Great end result, and a fine looking bass. Not enough strings though...!
24. Another fan for the fingerboard (whole bass is lovely, but that board is a bit special)! Also like the heel detail on the neck.
