1. A whole herd, in fact... what a beautiful instrument. Am I the only one who thinks it actually looks better with the plainer, more understated Barts on?
2. In October last year, I replaced my beautiful sounding but hugely heavy SWR SM-900 head with Etienne's G-B Shuttle 6.0. Bought a rackmount kit from BassDirect Mark and voila It soon became apparent that the Focusrite compressor was now fairly superfluous -- as fabulous a unit as it is, I found it couldn't really make any improvement to the basic sound of the Shuttle and so there was really no need to keep it. So in January the Focusrite went, to be replaced by a FunkLogic DD-301 Digilog Dynamicator... the best DFA processor money can buy. The contents of the rack now weigh substantially less than the rack itself Some might say it defeats the object of having a lightweight amp, but I disagree... it's sooooo handy having it all permanently connected up in the one rack, as it means all I need to do is stack it all up, plug in the speakers and the 240v, and off I go. It actually takes longer to get the bass de-cased and strapped up than it does to set up the rig AKG SR100 wireless G-B Shuttle 6.0 2 x Nemesis NSP115 1x15" cabs Total rig weight is around 80lbs. Or in other words, 20lbs less than one of my old Peavey 4x10s
3. Thankfully, not all company forums (fora?) are full of arselickers and thought-police. The Eden one is very good.
For a "light the blue touchpaper" moment, try posting that your Ray has lower output from the G string.
Or better yet: "My 'Ray used to have a lower output from the G string. But I fitted a Status neck and SD pickup and Bartolini eq and Gotoh bridge, and now it's great. I encourage everybody with the same problem to do likewise."
4. Shakespeare might have added a few more "hey-nonny"s if he'd written it. And a better bassline.

A few more pics to share. Proud dad I reckon he likes it Arrggh! So many strings! A good day EDIT: on reflection, I think his big smile in the last pic is because he'd just realised that he and Dood were the only guys in the room with any hair.
6. 10600 members, 10600 different answers. It's as definitive as "who's the best bassist". My personal bête noir is Bill Wyman -- some people think he's perfect for the job, I think he's a waste of strings and oxygen. You pays your money, and so on.

OldGit

Dear all, This is the hardest post I have ever had to write. As CK mentioned at the end of the other thread, I have to tell you that our buddy Simon, known to us all as OldGit -- a name that was only ever 50% true, bless him -- has passed away in tragic circumstances. As I said at the start of the other thread, I originally posted it because I had been requested to do so, by one of his closest friends -- it was intended to be a temporary measure to cover his absence, until such times as news could be properly broken. Although I can see that some of you did find it suspicious, and that it probably caused a lot of concern, and for this I sincerely apologise. It was never my intention to cause alarm. The outpouring of warmth towards him on that thread is at once both wonderful and heartbreaking to see, and in part this is why it is such a hard post to write; because I can see just how many of you will be upset to have lost him and sad to think that he won't be sharing any more invaluable hints or diabolical Welsh humour with us. I can barely believe it myself, I keep expecting the phone to ring or a text to arrive. I remember the first time I met him... he and I pitched up for a band audition at the same time (he was after the bari sax gig though, so thankfully we weren't in competition, or I'd have come off worse). He strode in, wearing his usual grin and one of his succession of battered jazzers' hats, and carrying this huge sax case which bore a sticker reading "oh my god, it's SO BIG". Made I laugh. I liked him immediately, but then again that was the effect he had. He didn't have an ounce of pretentiousness or a trace of egotism about him. If you tried to shake his hand, he'd dismiss it with a snort and give you a big warm hug instead. He was that kind of bloke, as any of you who met him will know. And for those of you who never did have the pleasure of meeting him, all I can say is that believe me, you wish you had. The great gig in the sky has become a warmer, funnier, friendlier place. God bless you, my friend. Rich
8. Seeing Level 42 performing 'Foundation & Empire' live on Channel 4 in 1983.
9.
Not to be a stick in the mud but this {the sentimental value} would really bother me.
Me too. I would never be able to let a bass go that had been bought for me in similar circumstances. But hey, I'm a big softie
10. To my shame, I have only just got round to reading this. Good interview, and insightful answers... much good advice in there too. What an absolutely throughly bloody nice bloke.
Best beard in rock (IMHO)
Agreed. Lee's beard makes Billy Gibbons' look like itchy bumfluff.
11. I think this one might have enough oomph for large gigs. Although at 200lbs, weight is a bijou bit of an issue.
12. I agree about those mad blue LEDs too -- faaaaar too bright. I wish there was some way of taming them a bit.
13.
i'd like your Shuker. was that a 5?
Yup, my Shuke is a 5, and you can have it if you like. A certain amount of prising open of cold dead hands would be required, however Might be worth having a word with Jon though, & see what your grand will get.
14. You could do a lot worse than this very nice Lakky DJ5. I'd have it myself if I had the moolah.
15. Yay for small stacks. Shuttle 6.0, two Nemesis 1x15s, total rig weight just over 70lbs. The only thing stopping me from carrying the whole lot in one go is the lack of a third arm
16. I bloody hope so. Ungrateful twonk.
17. Yeah. Fancy us being taken in by the evil old Flowers man and his wickedness.
18. Well... if you're the sort of person who likes bass solos, then yes there have been lots of good ones. If you're the sort of person who doesn't like bass solos, then no.
Tony Grey's solo in the extended version of summer rain featuring the Hiromi Trio http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VL14_nd2C2Q
That is glorious. Melodic, not overly flashy, just fabulous.
19.
There can only be one prototype. A prototype is the first and original design of what all other designs follow on from. There cannot possibly be two.
Well, Fender themselves would seem to disagree with you there... photo caption from their website: "Close-up of a 1959 Jazz Bass prototype shows the soon-discarded soapbar pickup." So if Fender reckon there was more than one prototype of their own product, that's good enough for me. And if Herbie Flowers says he bought his bass in 1959, that's also good enough for me. When comes down do it, what the f*** does it really matter? It's still the bass (and the bassist) on Space Oddity, Walk on the Wild Side, War Of The Worlds, Diamond Dogs...
20. That Coppolo's tone is to die for. Absolutely gorgeous, and so very high in the mix! Wonderful stuff. Is there any way of ripping the audio out of this? I'm having no luck in saving the video file either.
21.
I'm looking for something that have 21-24 fret
With how many strings?
22. Well of course you passed, we never doubted you would for a second. Well done!
23.
My first proper head was that and i loved it, but it just weighed so much.
Yup. The weight is the one single solitary thing I dislike about it.
24. Having read Shrek's post about his underperforming Warwick head, I thought I'd post a little something in praise of the ancient but still completely trusty Hartke 3500 head I bought from Brycebites (remember him? wish he was still here) many years ago, and which I use for rehearsals and small gigs. Christ, it's loud. I mean, really. If I use it with one of my 8Ω Nemesis cabs it's supposedly only delivering 180 watts, but good god it delivers it well. And with both cabs, it's fackin huuuuge. Sometimes I think about flogging it and getting something else, but then I think... why? It definitely ain't broke, so why try to fix it? It's great. Anyone else got some Hartke lurrrve?
25. With regard to the licensing/frequencies thingy... how is this likely to affect the older VHF units? My old AKG SR100 -- picked up for peanuts off fleaBay, and absolutely brilliant -- is trundling along nicely on 175.0MHz, but what's going to happen?
