My 2nd bass was a Columbus J. Don't know what the body was made of, but the bound/block neck was lovely and it sounded really good. I wired up a series/parallel switch and it got even better. Lent it to a 'friend' who promptly left town with it. Mike Hague, I hope it electrocuted you.

Welcome aboard Stunning instrument. The quilt catches the light beautifully, it looks about a mile deep.

When I was younger (so much younger than today), if I asked to try out a bass and the assistant insisted on showing off all his slap chops before handing it to me, I used to take great delight in playing two notes, saying "nah, don't like it mate" and giving it straight back. These days I don't bother going into 90% of music shops, because I've usually got better bass gear than they have

I agree with these two gents. Yamaha got the TRBs pretty much spot on.

Deal breakers for me, as with many others, would be: fat neck, tight string spacing at the bridge, neck dive, excessive weight. Any of these would see me putting it straight back down again. Colour is a factor too, but to a lesser extent. Hardware is easily changed, so not a problem if the rest of the instrument is perfect. I always found the Jam's "Down In The Tube Station At Midnight" very powerful. The line 'They took the keys, she'll think it's me' sends a shiver down my spine, and not a nice one.
