Excellent deal with Paul on Pickups and Wiring Harness. Packaged perfectly, so much so, that it was able to withstand a Courier lobbing it over a fence onto solid concrete! Nice one, mate.

New Band... is it a keeper or time to walk?
BigAlonBass replied to Grangur's topic in General Discussion
It does strike me, though, that the keys and the guitarist are belting it out for attention all at the same time. Get used to it, some things never change! Actually it's all a bit all the same. (Or is it cos of my noob bass playing?) Quite possibly, but with every rehearsal, you're improving But if each song is played in a different style to the original, how can I learn them? Take a small recorder of some description (H2 or suchlike), record the rehearsals, and play along to 'their versions' at home. The keys and the leader have played together in bands for about 50 years, but they don't seem to be able to take it in turns to solo and stand back to give room for the other. See first reply. The keys player sounds like some wurlitzer organ on a bad night at a holiday camp. Sacrilege, I know, but on certain songs, so does Jon Lord. The guitarist sounds like a Hank Marvin wannabe on speed. (He has a C&W background btw) He might actually be on a steep learning curve as well, trying new (to him) things, and be almost as worried as you.
Give it time. Things may improve, they may not, but you're learning all the time, and I don't just mean new songs. -

Bugger! I've been looking for one of these to complete my collection, but I've only got 8 million going spare. -
We do three sets of roughly an hour each with a half hour break after set one then about fifteen minutes after second set. We start at 10 ish and finish about 1.30 . I too have a problem with taking breaks just when it's getting busy and you end up losing folk cos the bar doesn't put music on . Our guitarist annoys me cos he has to have his breaks for a fag and I'm standing listening to every bugger laying off cost they've just come in and want some music
MP3 or CD player going through the PA between sets helps.

BigAlonBass replied to essexbasscat's topic in General Discussion
Woodchopper's Ball - reading the dots - 1965. (It was with an Old Tyme Dance Band who paid VERY well!) -

Your Guitarist is right. Just make sure you don't try to play before it dries completely!

The second that most people see 'Pick up only' they immediately flick to the next item. Good score! -

Appearance of you and band on stage - clothing opinions?
BigAlonBass replied to Diablo's topic in General Discussion
I suppose it all depends on the type of clientele the Dog and Duck gets on Band Nights. Round these here parts, most of the audiences are pretty knowledgeable about their Music, and there are a surfeit of excellent Bands on the 'circuit'. If you make the effort to stand out from the crowd, it gives Landlords and Punters alike something 'extra' to remember you by, and it doesn't cost a lot either. A while ago, the Band I was in were searching for a 'look' to take on the road, and Asda came to the rescue! The Wife told me they had a Sale on, so for the massive sum of £24, we bought 4 black t-shirts and 4 black vests. We wore the t-shirts for the First Set, along with black jeans that we all owned, and vests for the Second. At our second gig, the Landlord came up to us and said it was excellent that we had made the effort to look like a Band, said we had a Professional look about us, and gave us another 3 gigs for the rest of the year. (With a bigger fee, I might add.) Word spread, the money went up, Gigs came rolling in, and all on the strength of a daft 'uniform'. I suppose the fact that we could play well might have helped a bit though. -
Just bought some Squire Electronics from Den, and it seemed like they were delivered to my house before I had chance to draw breath! To rip off an old eBay saying - "Deal With Confidence. 5* "

Position markers, why so positioned?
BigAlonBass replied to arthurhenry's topic in General Discussion
on a fretless, (with markers) do they put the markers in the middle of where the fret would be, or where the actual note is?
Both. It tends to vary from Manufacturer to Manufacturer, or even Luthier to Luthier. You have to ask, or find out yourself, when buying. -
3 days, 3 gigs, 3 different bands... 73 songs!
BigAlonBass replied to warwickhunt's topic in General Discussion
Have you heard much of a watering hole 'The Schooner' Al? Luckily, Berb and the boys in the band will make it easy on Saturday... I hope!
Funnily enough, a mate of mine has just posted some photo's of a gig there on farcebook, and apparently the audience were "well up for it!" The 'stage' area seems a bit small, but you should get your sylph-like figure tucked in a corner without any problem. -

Just joined. Sayin hi. Advice needed for cleanup of fender jv bass
BigAlonBass replied to TheBishop's topic in Introductions
Stick the scratchplate under a pile of heavy books, and return to it in 17 years! (Should actually only take a few weeks) Immerse chrome bits in Coke (pop not white powder) until they look better, rinse in clean water and buff till pretty. .....and welcome to the site. -
They seem to have become 'fashionable' again. I sold mine for £100 a couple of years ago, and the lad who bought it off me has just sold it on for £400.
