What an amazing bass solo ... or maybe not
Marvin replied to A.G.E.N.T.E.'s topic in General Discussion
I thought it a little embarrassing. I can only imagine the fellow thought he had to pull out all the stops, given wots his name was on stage, and unfortunately it went...well, not well. -
I like to have input in a band, especially over material. This may not be specific songs but on direction. If there's some aspect of the band I think it total arse then I want to be in a situation where I can say so, and that goes from songs to promotional material. If someone produces a gig poster and I think it looks like a 3 year old did it I'll say so. I'm standing out in public performing music, I don't want it looking in what would be my view, rubbish. I'm not interested in being a 'side man' or in scratch bands.

Anyone remember Ficelles and what got him banned?
Marvin replied to andydye's topic in General Discussion
You could try searching for him on Join My Band and contacting him on there. He uses the same user name on that site as well. -
Finding people who are committed enough to turn up or learn songs is a task enough. Having them share musical taste would be a massive leap. It's a huge problem for me actually. All guitarists want to play blues rock and I'd...rather not.

I've had about 6 months out from bands. I went to a couple of practices with a new set up over the last few weeks and I'm already ready to quit. The prospect of learning another set of covers that, as the list is unveiled, I start to dislike fills me with dread. Just being in a band, playing for the sake of it, isn't enough anymore, it's got to be something that bit more. Music, especially covers band, just isn't doing it for me. There's other stuff I'm finding more rewarding. Anyone want to buy some gear?

To be fair there have been several real stinkers in the past, so this effort isn't unique

There's nothing at all wrong with Fenders IMO apart from the price. Before I bought the Sire V7 I have now I checked out the standard Fender Jazz and in hindsight I made absolutely the right decision. I cannot see how a Std Fender Jazz is nearly twice the price of a Sire. If I were looking to spend £700-1000 on a bass, my first thought would be a Maruszczyk not a Fender. The Precision and Jazz designs are great, I love them both, I just don't need a Fender headstock to get a good one.
not for long, if you sound crap the bookings will soon dry up, at the end of the day everybody, more or less, finds their own level....
There are an abundance of awful sounding bands who are getting regular bookings all the time. I just turned one down recently They have a full diary of gigs and 3 of the 5 members are just dreadful. I'm very average, and they're worse than me. They play what the punters want to hear so they get the gigs.

I used my V3 Rumble Combo for the first time in a band practice last night. Good grief how loud are these things! I was quite surprised. It has a great tone and performed great.

The people and material have got to be right for me. I'd rather not play than be in a band with time wasters and/or playing material I dislike. I recently turned down a busy band because the drummer is shockingly bad and the set they play was dreadful. That's not enjoyment and it's also burning good money in rehearsal fees and petrol.

We'd like to book your band...but...(song requests)

Open Mic Nights – Huh? – What Are They Good For?
Marvin replied to anaxcrosswords's topic in General Discussion
Most of the open mics in my neck of the woods are predominantly acoustic and there's not a bass in sight. The ones that are fully geared up seem to be used by the host band as a paid rehearsal and dominated by the same faces and friends of the band. So for me they're a total waste of time. I've been to one run by a mate of mine, on numerous occasions, and the scope for getting up with others to have a crack is nil. -
Guess. Go on, guess.
Who did that one? Never heard of it

Is it possible to forget how to play the bass?
Marvin replied to bobpalt's topic in General Discussion
I certainly hope one doesn't forget to play. I've not played for 6 months and have just started learning songs for an audition and to say my playing at the moment is shambolic would be and understatement -
Should a dep be paid for a "freebie" gig?
Marvin replied to hiram.k.hackenbacker's topic in General Discussion
I'd be inclined to say I wasn't available. Having to use a days holiday to cover an unpaid gig for a band I'm not really in would be a bit much for me. -
Despite having been in cover bands, as a punter I'd never, ever, pay to go and see one. There's couple of venues near me that charge £3 to see cover bands, not for me. I only paid £20 to see Richie Kotzen, Billy Sheehan and Mike Portnoy play last year

21kg is nothing, one should be able to lift that with one's little finger. It's a bargain. I'd probably look at a 1x15. I borrowed a 1x15 cab last year, it belonged to the headline band's bass player. I was skeptical as it look like a right dogs breakfast...how wrong was I. A 300w head into a tatty 1x15, it really had guts to it.

There were very few bands that I listened to, when first getting serious about music, that took much, if anything, from the Beatles. In my formative years I started by listening to 50's rock'n'roll and stuff Teddy boys would have listened to. From that I went to blues and r&b and from there to punk. For my musical development they're a bit player. And for the younger folk of today the Beatles have near no influence at all...not with regards to hip hop and contemporary R&B which seems to be their thing.

I don't use my amp to practice with at home so I'd assume that the tone is different playing with a band. I tend to use a USB interface into a laptop just to work out parts or learn songs. A tone that sounds nice in my dinning room may sound awful live or in a rehearsal room so I don't get precious about tone at home. In a band context it depends entirely what the band want to sound like and that can change from song to song.
